Abominable: 20 Things to Know About the Dreamworks Animated Film | Collider
DreamWorks’ Upcoming Abominable Is Going To Be A Beautiful Tear-Jerker
CinemaBlend was recently invited to the Dreamworks campus in Glendale, California to preview portions of the film, and it was completely emotionally effective – even without full context of what Abominable has to offer. A combination of chills and tears were had the roughly 20 minutes we witnessed. It really looks like something special.

'Abominable' Could Be a New DreamWorks Animated Classic | Moviefone
First of all, it’s very clear that this movie is way different from those other yeti-focused films. Most importantly, the yeti in this movie doesn’t speak, unlike in those other films. This yeti, named Everest by the young girl who discovers him on her metropolitan Chinese rooftop, is more of an animal than a person. We were treated to a sequence where the girl Yi (Chloe Bennet) does a series of odd jobs to try and pay for a trip across China that she’s been desperately planning. Of course, she is interrupted by the arrival of this yeti (we didn’t see the sequence where the yeti escapes from a private lab and how he winds up on that rooftop, but it sounded exciting).

One of the sequences we saw was a lengthy, dialogue-free sequence where she meets Everest, tries to help him repair his injured arm, and starts to understand that she’s got to return him to Mount Everest. It was a beautiful sequence, a stunning showcase of the animation and the performances that the animators gave Everest and Yi, the sort of thing that anyone working in animation loves to attempt. And, it should be noted, the animation even in an unfinished form, is absolutely astonishing and ranks amongst the best the studio has ever produced, particularly a moment when Yi plays her violin on the rooftop, the entire city opening up beneath her as she plays. It’s stunning.

The film premiered yesterday at Toronto International film festival with kids in the audience absolutely loving it and with critics positive to mixed reactions with some saying the story was too straight forward for their taste with lack of twists and others stating the film was so safe and non offense it didn't make an impact.

I'm not expecting much out of this film for two reasons:

A) Marketing has been almost non-existent. I've barely seen any ads for it on TV over the past couple of weeks and the meet and greet and Universal doesn't really seem to be generating a lot of buzz.

B) Animated films in September haven't been performing well in recent years. Storks, Lego Ninjago, and Smallfoot all came and went and were soon forgotten after a couple of months.

highest score for an animated kids movie release in September...this may have legs with positive word of mouth. This also allows Universal to surpass Disney in most films to hit #1 this year with estimated 20 million OW.
