Great Scott, a queue through Doc Brown’s house/garage/lab could be a lot of fun.

The ceiling is incredibly high for what they could do with BTTF. I hope this gets the effort it deserves and isn't just a band-aid on Supercharged.

So one thing I've been thinking about, would BTTF fans accept this vs no ride at all? Because at this point I think those are the options Universal is looking at.

I mean, I would. And the overlap of BTTF fans and diehard Universal fans who know Supercharged sucks probably isn't high enough to where the general public would care. Especially if they actually change the ride system and make it a real ride, but even the current system would fit BTTF far better than F&F. If they just do a quick retheme and put more of the budget into a Hill Valley land, I think that would also go over very well.

BTTF would work for me. A great queue, preshow (where the present live preshows are) with a live Doc Brown, good sets and
a well done 360 film. The bus could easily be adapted to the storyline. If done well, it could be a very fun/entertaining attraction.
....This set up works well for Kong. It didn't work for the F&F IP since it was too far from the guts of the IP, plus the 360 film was
'amateurish' and should have never been accepted in its finished form....If Universal is looking to change the ride system and 360
type film, a dark ride would probably work too, though they'd probably have to downsize the present queue area. But it is a pretty
large building overall to work with.

Are there any further hints that this may actually be happening?

If Biff is involved somehow I would accept just about anything BTTF. Maybe he’s stolen the DeLorean and we have to take a Doc’s latest invention (an old Hill Valley tour bus hooked up with a flux capacitor) to chase him through different time periods to get it back. Hilarity ensues. And this time we’d be laughing with the ride, not at it.

The rumor came from Len Testa on WDWMagic. Moth is also a reliable insider over on that site.

2 reports of a refurb, one saying BTTF
