Put Duffy or the the Adventurers Club cast or The Horned King at D23 or along the marathon course, they'll be slammed. That doesn't mean either would support a new E-ticket. You can cater small stuff to the super fans, but anything like this needs to be four-quadrant.

Eh…maybe not if it’s just a reskin. And even nothing but super fan engagement would be an improvement over Supercharged.

Back to the Future is infinitely more well known than any of the things you mentioned. It is a draw beyond just Universal parks fans.

Back to the Future came out in 1985. I was born in 1991. Back to the Future is one of my favorite movies and, unless I truly fail as a parent, it will be one of my daughter's favorite movies as well. I was at California Adventure today and there were scores of kids screaming at Lightning McQueen. Kids that were born more than a decade after Cars was released in theaters.

Which is all to say: Yes, agreed. There are plenty of movies that have broad appeal long after their initial wave.

It's not just that it's a great trilogy of movies with iconic elements and broad appeal - that alone doesn't sustain a property's place in the minds of the general public. Universal also does a fairly good job keeping Back to the Future in the cultural conversation through regular physical media and theatrical rereleases, featuring it in LBE in various forms (including the musical), and offering plentiful, evolving merchandise.
