Nintendo Is Getting Into The Movie Business – My Nintendo News

"Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima was interviewed by Asahi and discussed Nintendo’s initiative with movies. Not only is Nintendo getting into the movie business, but Kimishima hinted that Nintendo wants a production system where “we can do as much as we can ourselves.” Kimishima continued, saying that Nintendo hopes to have the first movie ready in the next 2-3 years. Yes, Nintendo is considering their own franchises, including Mario. Not much more was revealed, but it sounds like Nintendo sees movies as a promising business move. Feel free to let us know in the comments what Nintendo franchises would you like to see appear on the big screen."

Considering the odds; this may be the most interesting thing to consider. Technically speaking; it could work out that Nintendo seeks to be going in an style similar to Marvel Studios for its films, considering if they intend on doing most of the work in-house.

But what would curious me the most, is who would be the distributor. Theres always the possibility that they may intend on having the partnership of Comcast reach to there, but it may not be impossible to consider WB Pictures or Fox Studios as open possiblitys aswell.

And considering the odds, there is two IP's that i'd see as the best potential uses. Those two, would be Metroid (Eerie Sci-Fi/Action film) and The Legend of Zelda. Even if i'm not considering Mario to the mix; its not impossible that they could go in a fun aspect for the plumber. But anythings possible; and it adds more curious insight that Pokémon is possibly in development for a film aswell, so they could set that in-house with Nintendo aswell.

But the possibilities are endless and this will be interesting to share. So, thoughts on the possible initative to do films?

After reading that Forbes article, I wonder if Nintendo will try and do a shared universe with all of their characters similar to MCU. They have a lot of potential... Mario, Zelda, DK, Yoshi, etc. plus stories told from the villains' side (Bowser, Wario, Ganondorf, etc) like Maleficent.

I hope they get a good team for these.

My opinion would be they should do Metroid first. Its the one that would have the least backlash if it flops.

So Nintendo will act as its own Production company, ensuring complete quality control eh? Then I take it all they'd need is a Distributor (which, I am not going to be surprised if its Comcast that is currently negotiating with them right now).

Toho will be its distributor in japan for sure but it will be interesting to see who gets the other rights and gets to slap their name on the film.

I don't want to be that guy.

But, I'm not sold on this at all. Nintendo has nobody in-house with any movie experience. When Marvel started making their own movies, it was after years of experiencing producing movies. They had people who were fluent in the industry. They figured out what worked and what didn't.

Nintendo has nothing. Movie-making is completely foreign to them. A better example would be the new Ratchet + Clank movie (for the 3 of you that saw the trailer). Sony's studio was heavily involved and they did it all in-house. It led to a movie that nobody knew about, had bad ratings, and basically no box office. I'd rather see Nintendo get in bed with somebody who understands movies and can make a better product.

Not animated by them, but they also had done shorts based off of the characters of Kid Icarus aswell. Nothings impossible to say that they can do it, as it all depends on their budget and story.

Bump..and while this isn't exactly Nintendo-oriented; they do own the IP in some extent..

Legendary Pictures may be possibly developing a live-action feature film, based on Pokémon.

They are one third owners between game freak, creature inc, and nintendo but they have a large stake in game freak so they have more influence. But Legendary getting the deal is good as Universal gets distribution and the option to invest and "produce" the film as well.
