Saw the movie only recently and found the vocals to be dreadful. I was lucky enough to see the original broadway production in previews (softs). If you are so disposed listen to these two tracks. The judge sounds like the actor from Potter and GoT. If you are not familiar with Len Cariou (sweeney) search goog and you will say, OH!. The broadway production was much more IN YOUR FACE! Much was cut from the movie.

Angela Lansbury apologized to the audience that evening because she had a slight cold but she was brilliant.

I look at it as the biggest budget high school musical I ever saw. Not a singer among them, but they seemed to be having such fun.

That was a very strange movie. The only time I left a theater and didn't know if I liked or hated the movie.

What is really funny as I recall, was all the heads turning to their companions in the audience during the Little Priest number. Even I had to ask my companion, "are they saying what I think they're saying?". It was the most twisted moment in broadway history.

Sondheim is a genius. The wordplay in his lyrics is amazing.

When I hear his lyrics is when I realize I am no one. When I got home today, I had to type one of his lyric words into google to see if it was a real word. It is. I was ashamed.

If you are a fan and don't have the two books (Finishing the Hat, Look I Made a Hat), you need to get them. It's fascinating to read the variations on the lyrics he wrote and explanations of his choices.

I haven't read those books, but I did see the HBO docu about him. Does he still live in turtle bay? I stood outside his townhouse years ago because a friend was gaga over Katherine Hepburn who lived next door. Talk about teenage boredom to stand outside Kate's townhouse for a friend.

The HBO doc was good. The Sondheim on Sondheim recordings are also great. Lots more insights on the evolution of the shows/songs/lyrics with him voicing over commentary.

Frig... now I have this soundtrack stuck in my head. I couldn't get to sleep last night because it kept going round and round, lyrics and orchestration. :blank:

Only seen the movie, still learning lots about musicals I really love. I've not seen many movie adaptations that people like, mostly because of horrible vocals.
That being said this was one of the darkest things I've ever seen and even if the movie wasn't a brilliant version I still loved the idea. I also love Sondheim orchestrations, they have a distinct sound but they are all wonderfully different at the same time. I know the lyrics are his and those are always beautiful and poetic... I feel very sheepish admitting I submitted an audition to UCF this year using Finishing the Hat, because well... Anyone who's intelligent knows better :look::lol: I know now I'm not worthy...

Yeah, I am pretty much over classic broadway musicals. Cannot stand them actually. But ST is more of an Opera than a broadway show. As a matter of fact, after the original left broadway, it was picked up by the New York City Opera at Lincoln Center. I don't believe that company exists any longer, but you get my point. Goodness, I am a bore of trivia...

I loved the Burton movie. One of the few times I didn't think Johnny Depp was insufferable.

So, what's your take on Hamilton? Pretty non-traditional for Broadway.

I haven't listened to the soundtrack yet and haven't been to NYC in decades.
