What the title says! Thanks @Brian G. for the idea in the Villain-Con thread.

Pre-shows can add onto an attraction and make them an even more memorable and exciting experience that helps tell a grand story (Rise, Unchained), or the most dreadful thing in the queue (Cosmic Rewind). Let's talk about em!

I love good preshows. They can really elevate an attraction if done well.....I'll sometimes skip my hotel express line (if standby is not
too long, just to catch a preshow that express bypasses. ....or in the case of Reign of Kong....I'll pause in the Express line, at the short
dividing wall, so I can watch the whole of the Voodoo Witch show that's in the stand by queue area..

Probably my favorite pre-show of all time is Tower of Terror; the exact right length, in the exact right space, setting the exact right tone. Muppet*Vision's pre-show video would be high up there, too.

I was also a fan of how Universal structured Earthquake* and Alfred Hitchcock: The Art of Making Movies, where the line between a pre-show and the actual start of the attraction proper kind of blurred. They transitioned you from introductory stuff into the actual meat of the show without drawing attention to it.

* The music score running under the Charlton Heston video in the room with the model is one of my most sought-after theme park music cues; it really captured a "moviemaking is magic!" feel that elevated that part of the attraction.

The pre show for Shrek had great humor. I always looked forward to seeing it, the humor never got old. It was
actually better than the ride, though I liked the ride too. ....Simpson's pre shows are excellent also, though
there's less since they cut down the number of ride lines. ....FJ & RotR still best queue and pre shows ever, though
Monsters is close on their heels. Kong Voodoo witch pre show right up there too. ....Lots more, I'll add later.

By far, the best part of that experience.

Pre shows are great. In the orlando area the lines are almost always longer than the pre-show so it doesn't add any time to the wait. I would rather be in a room with some kind of entertainment versus spending more time in a queue area where I have probably already spent 30mins waiting.

As a local I can’t stand them. Besides the obvious fact that I’d just rather get on the ride if I’m going on something for the nth time, I also hate that it turns the structured line into a chaotic mosh pit. Someone is gonna get hurt at Guardians with the way these Disney adults absolutely ATTACK the right side of the last show room.

No they’re not. Guardians, for example, does not need two rooms of exposition that ultimately have nothing to do with the on-ride experience.

especially when they're more entertaining than the ride/attraction...and like its been said, you're going to be standing just as long in the queue, may as well be entertained instead of bored.

That one poorly done pre show doesn’t mean all pre shows shouldn’t exist though.

For me, pre-shows are totally fine when they're short, to-the-point and/or provide an entertaining experience. Some great examples being Haunted Mansion, Tower of Terror and GotG: Mission Breakout!/Monsters After Dark, Tron. For the most part, I'm not gonna' have an issue with a single pre-show as most of them follow the K.I.S.S. method.

Where things get tricky is when a ride has multiple pre-shows, for it can really fall into the issue of taking too long to get to the ride itself. Now there are some rides which pull this off, Monsters Unchained is a fantastic example as it's two pre-shows feel like they move briskly while also still doing some neat things and staying to the point. And then we have RotR which has multiple pre-shows, but it incorporates them into an overall experience which works nicely in that regard.

But then we have the rides which have multiple pre-shows which feel way too long, redundant and feel like a waste of time to get on the ride. Escape from Gringotts is on the lower end of this spectrum for me, as @Clive said, if they cut out the antechamber wait between the office and elevators, that would make things better. But then we have Flight of Passage where the second pre-show is fine, but the first is just an awkward drag.

And then we've got Cosmic Rewind which gives pre-shows a bad rep, it really does everything wrong here. A coaster does not need two pre-shows, both of them feel way too long, they're not that entertaining, and I feel the reason they have two of them is all because of the transporter effect which due to its design and execution, it ends of being a whiff of an effect. It all comes together into something I wish I could skip completely, and for me that's an utter failure of a pre-show.

Then there's some scenarios where the pre shows are even better than the attraction. I'm looking at you, Jimmy Fallon!

I don't know how many pre shows Minion Mayhem (USH) has, felt like 5 or 6 :lmao:, but it was so painful my family still makes fun of it and it's been a year.

Okay…the question is do you like them or not, not should they not exist.

I’m not particularly fond of bumblebees, either.
