I think beyond the hype we need to accept that Volcano Bay is just a water park.

When I saw the website and slide info I was like "that's it?"

But after a moment I realized it's decent for a water park. The whole theme park thing is a vast overstatement.

In Atlanta we have Six Flags White Water. It is just a water park. Parks like Volcano Bay are themed water parks. Calling it simply a theme park can be misleading.

By the same token, I'd say Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach fall under "water theme parks." They just never branded themselves that.

Been busy with work recently so not been able to keep up as much as usual and boy didn't a lot happen.

What with shootings, Fires and Gators Orlando sure has had a tough time, but the community showed great strength and courage and came together in unity. Orlando will heel and be back stronger than ever.

Through all the sadness though themepark land has been opening rides like they are ten a penny and more rumours have surfaced for future hotels and attractions.

Volcano bay though has really come on leaps and bounds and the recent announcement added a few more details to what we already knew. This will be a fascinating project to watch over the next few months.

I half expect a Universal water park to go the Virtual Jungle Cruise route and put us in front of a screen on an air mattress with tilt controls.

I think with the state of the art queue management system/infrastructure design and some of the stuff we don't know yet, the "Water Theme Park" name will make more sense.

They are going above and beyond with this park. I can understand theme not wanting it lumped in the same general category as Wet n Wild.

I think having the "Water Theme Park" tagline is correct, cause IOA can simply be named an "Amusement Theme Park". I think people just believe a theme park has to be "dry", but theme parks have water rides and even slides (KidZone). And what if Volcano Bay has some type of "dry" thrill ride? Would it then be considered a theme park?

Might not mean much to anyone, but approaching from the South on I-4 (Eastbound For Tourist), this mountain is starting to really look good. People are gong to be in their cars and be like "Ooooo Whats that?" and even if they dont go right away, they will remember it. It will be a landmark in this city.

Not sure if this was brought up earlier, but as far as theming goes, I'd say Atlantis in the Bahamas is the best "water theme park" as far as mixing impeccable theming with genuinely thrilling water attractions.

I've been to Typhoon Lagoon, Blizzard Beach, and Atlantis, and Atlantis was the most spectacular by a pretty wide margin, although the Summit Plummet was a pretty neat "bucket list" slide to check off and leave it at that.

At Atlantis, the majority of the water park is centered around the enormous mile-long lazy river, which has tranquil sections and rapids sections through caves and such. Want to go on a water slide? Just paddle your tube over to the "freeway offramp" where a conveyor will take you (still riding on the tube) up to the top of the slide tower. Once in the tower, just paddle to the slide you want and have fun. The slides end right back into the lazy river again.

It's a system that keeps everyone moving and comfortable. We did have to wait in "line" in the canal to get onto the conveyor, but since you're just sitting there in your tube, it wasn't a big deal. The river also has pacing sections were conveyors spanning the whole river lift all riders up and over walkways. The operators controlled the speed of these conveyors to help space out groups of tubes. No other water park I've been to has perfected the lazy river concept quite like Atlantis, so I really hope VB adopts even just some of these features for their park.

As far as clear tubes go, the showcase water slide down the side of a Mayan-like temple through the shark tank is pretty neat, but since it's a high speed slide, the clear section is just a blip, and you can't see anything. It might as well be a black tube the whole way down. They do have an intertube slide that fills up the whole inside of that temple, and has a clear tube parallel to the high speed slide. However, on the intertube slide, the current is barely moving through the clear section, so you get a full 360 degree view of the sharks swimming around you as you float along in the tube. It's a spectacular effect, and one I think could be used at VB for a show scene with AAs, screens, lighting, and water effects. Having a fully enclosed tube ensures nobody jumps off the slide into the scene.

I enjoy Atlantis just fine but I'm actually not a huge fan of being in the lazy river for HOURS as it takes up and through all the different attractions. At 6 feet, I'm only comfortable in a tube for so long.

I'm 6'1", and spent a solid two days on that lazy river.
My wife and I kept telling ourselves we'd get up and walk on the beach or something, but "just one more loop around..."

I do remember certain "hub" areas where lots of people got on and off could get crowded at times, and not all slides are directly accessible from the conveyor, but most of them were.

I highly recommend "The Abyss" slide, which drops through the center of the main slide tower and spits you out underground in a really cool grotto with giant fish tanks all around you.

"The Abyss" slide was great. It was the first one my wife and I went on when we stayed at Atlantis. We saw that it was just a dark hole body slide and didn't know what it did. The guys working up there told us it was a baby slide and went very slow. We decided to try it out since we didn't have tubes with us. I was going to go first but they insisted that my wife had to go before me. Just before she went down I they smiled at each other and signaled me to listen. She didn't scream cause we like thrill rides but there was a definite gasp. That drop into darkness is a little unnerving but the grotto at the end was a really cool finish. We went on that slide many times that trip. Atlantis still is my favorite water park I've been to.

:D

In a similar vein, they told a jocular guy ahead of me the same sort of lie. Thinking it was a leisurely ride, he practically launched himself into the tube. About two seconds after being swallowed by the darkness, we hear a "HOLY CRAAAAAaaaaaaaaaappppppppp!!!!!!!" echo out of the slide, gradually fading as he reached the bottom. It sounded like a Wile E. Coyote type drop.

Everyone in the line was laughing.

It's like podcasting to me... How does one wake up one day and decide that they should be a voice that people listen to for entertainment?

In my heyday I turned down many requests to go on podcasts as a guest because I don't think I'm all that interesting.
