Big time bump for this. Originally scheduled for October 2021. I guess with the show not performing live for the foreseeable future, they decided to move it up.

I’m very surprised it’s going on Disney+ unless it’s severely edited. Much needed A+ content for the service though.

I’m guessing the “history” angle will give it a censor reprieve

Is this going to be the first R rated title on Disney+?

My guess is they do something like have it “unrated” just to skip the “R” rating.

There’s going to be a whole lot of surprised people who watch this with their kids and have only heard “Hamilton is great” in passing

I’m guessing there will be very noticeable warnings before it starts to cover themselves with the families that inevitably complain.

Since it's released only on streaming, does it even need an MPAA rating? So *technically* if it doesn't go to theaters, there's nothing R-rated on Disney+ (by sheer technicality alone).

It'll definitely have some warning of adult language and themes.

I'm glad it's going up though. It's a fantastic show that I got lucky and won the lottery to see the original cast. The energy behind it is magnetic and it's a good shot in the arm for the content stable.

All Disney+ original films so far have had an MPAA rating. I could see them going a different route here and instead classifying it as TV-MA.

Booooooooooooo.

I wonder how much money Disney offered him for him to choose Disney over a more unfiltered service like Netflix, Amazon Prime or HBO Max.

Although only 9 of the 23 songs in the show are explicit, so I guess they might be able to pull this off with most songs not really affected, but it will be rough in some spots.

My honest assumption is that Disney+ is able to happen because they managed to edit/bleep out enough to at least bring it down to PG-13/TV-14. It does make me wonder what would count as ok, and what is not though. Can we cut an f-bomb but keep an entire affair?

I don’t think you can cut the affair as that’s essential to the story. There’s (brief) sex scenes in Marvel’s Runaways and it’s on the service so I think it’s fine.

But for reference, the f-bomb is pretty much the only swear word not heard on Disney+. Marvel’s Runaways, movies from the Touchstone library (“10 Things I Hate About You“, etc) and a lot of the TV-14 NatGeo shows have a lot of more “adult” language.

The f-bombs are definitely getting censored though. I think best case scenario is that that’s the only thing to be bleeped.

I understand the logic behind this but what infuriates me is that we should be able to have a choice.

Release an original cut and a family cut. Besides a little editing time and the minuscule data on a server, it's not going to cost anything to provide a better experience for those who want it.

Knowing that it’s going to censored makes me not want to watch it.

They can always release a Special higher priced Directors Cut on DVD/Blu Ray) that's unedited, for the full experience....Plus added revenue.

I mean, the first four bars include the terms “bastard,” and, “son of a whore.” It’s not profanity, but still pretty blue language for Disney. The show also uses the term “cuckold” with a lot of narrative emphasis. It’s not a kid-friendly show.

If they’re only muting out f-bombs, then it only effects a couple of songs. If they’re muting $#!+ then the show becomes much more broken. They might as well cut the entirety of “My Shot.”

Maybe they add a disclaimer, like they do for those shows/movies with "outdated cultural references"? For what it's worth, they've left the saltier language/innuendo from The Simpsons intact. I've been watching it a lot in quarantine and all the stuff that pissed off George Bush back in the early '90s is still there, including the swear words. Is Hamilton really that much worse than a particularly raunchy episode of The Simpsons?

My Shot uses $#!+ eight times. Hamilton, as a show, is closer to Family Guy or American Dad in its language use. The words aren’t used for emphasis or effect; they’re entwined with the show’s voice.

Ah, here it is. It's no wonder Lin is willing to bleep out a few words here and there if Disney's paying $75M. For Disney, this deal does give them full future rights to a potential Hamilton movie (non-staged) and rights to the music that comes from any of their distributions (I believe Hollywood Records would have the right to put out a Hamilton live album and potential movie soundtrack down the road, etc).

Also, from the article above:
"Director Tommy Kail directed both the stage version and the movie, which consisted of shooting three live performances, and also some setup shots without an audience. All of the footage was used to create multiple angles, to ensure the cinematic nature of the event, without a bad seat in the house."

The way they talk about it, it sounds like a hybrid version of the show and maybe that will be a way to get around some of the swearing?

As I said, i've come across enough programming on Disney+ with the word $#!+ in it that I doubt they censor it. My hope is they just censor the f-bomb and the edit won't be too bad. If they do edit out "son of a whore" and things like that, then yeah, it'll be hard to watch. I'll watch it once, but if it's extremely edited, it will decrease the replay value quite a bit.

I know that Disney+ needs content, but this most certainly should've been a Hulu project.

I could see D+ launching both a “family-friendly” abridged version as well as the full version with a disclaimer/pop-up for the profanity in the full version.
