It's been announced that RDJ has signed on to play opposite of Chris Evans in Captain America 3, which will follow the Civil War storyline from the comics. Film will be the start of an ongoing Civil War saga. Thoughts, opinions, yada...

I'm a bit skeptical since some of the key players won't be around due to Fox and Sony owning the movie rights. Maybe Spidey ends up as their has been rumored talks between Sony and Marvel working out something. Still, I don't think it'll be a full out Civil War like the comics.

It quite literally can't be. There are no secret identities in the MCU, which is what the conflict is about.

I'm no fan of the Civil War storyline in the comics, but I have faith in Marvel and the Russos to pull this off.

After a battle between two D-level characters ends up nearly leveling a small town and killing six hundred people, the government decides that superheroes have to register with them and work with the government rather than independently. Iron Man sides with the Registration side, and Cap leads the anti-registration side. The two sides fight it out on multiple occassions, Spider-man reveals his secret identity as a pro-Registration PR stunt before eventually going back to the anti-Registration side in one of the most pointless/dumb moves in comics. Eventually the two sides have one last battle where Cap beats the hell out of Iron Man before surrendering to stop the hostilities. As a result Iron Man becomes head of SHIELD and Cap is assassinated on his way to jail.

My favorite speculation so far has been that this will be a war over Bucky, since this follows the events of TWS. Cap wants to save his friend, and Stark wants to detain the legendary mercenary involved with the shady death of his father.

For starters that storyline sounds stupid, id much rather see these super heroes battle the "bad guys" than each other.

One odd thing that sticks out with that is how its been pointed out numerous times in the Ironman movies about privatizing our national defense and world peace and in a way anti governmental control while Cap has always been Mr GI Joe, which seems opposite as the Civil War stuff.

It's not the first time they've pitted the good guys against each other. Some of the fans go nuts for that kind of stuff.

And that's the point: their roles are flipped. It seems like the creation of Ultron is going to cause massive guilt for Stark, and TWS already laid the groundwork for Cap not trusting big government.

Cap has nearly never been Mr GI Joe outside of his WWII era characterization.

And yes, Ultron is going to change Stark's viewpoints greatly

Civil War wasn't about secret identities, it was about HAVING to work for the government. Go where they say when they say it. That's how the MCU will play it. Tony will side with the registration as a sign of penance for the creation of Ultron. Cap, who has seen what happens when you put everything under one umbrella, sides against. I assume that the NEW Avengers (Cap, Vision, the twins, Black Widow, Falcon and maybe War Machine) will all be on the anti-registration side. Tony, Bruce and Fury will be pro-registration I'm assuming. Bruce and Tony will be driven by their penitence. This storyline will supposedly carry over into Avengers 3, followed by the arrival of Thanos in 4. Remember, 3 and 4 might film back-to-back and be released roughly a year apart.

Uh, I don't agree with that at all. One of the biggest sticking points for many in the anti-registration camp was that their secret identities helped protect their families and loved ones. They contended giving them to the government would compromise their families and make them targets.

So you got Batman/Superman head to head, then a few months later you got Cap/Iron Man. Wow! I read somewhere DC got wind of that and moved to March, when these films were originally supposed to come out the same day.

I should've been more clear. It's not ONLY about exposing secret identities. But there was more to the war than just secrecy. In essence, the distrust that runs through Civil War regarding the protection of their identities is really the surface level issue of a deeper political and philosophical battle brewing underneath. The MCU is it's own universe and focuses on different aspects than the comics. It makes sense then that Civil War will be a product of the contamination of SHIELD that breeds distrust in the MCU. Secret identities aren't big in this universe, but conflict between government and heroes is a huge issue.

I thought Civil War is one of the most overrated Marvel events ever, but I knew they'd bring it to the big screen.

If they are going to bring Spider-Man into the fold for a movie as apparently has been talked about, this would actually be a decent way to do it. At least it wouldn't just be putting Spider-Man in a movie to put him in a movie... he actually fits in through the comics.

He needs to be established in the universe though and not just pop up for Civil War.

Mr Fantastic is also a big part of the Civil War story as well, this is truly a large scale story line, but there are plenty of things to be able to have it slide into the current MCU storyline.

And if they DO assasinate Cap at the end, then it could follow the comics where Bucky becomes the new Cap.

This will be the comics' version of Civil War just about as much as Avengers 2 will be the comics' version of Age of Ultron. In other words, not all that much. It'll take inspiration from them, but will be more or less its own thing.

Which they already teased in Winter Soldier with the shot of Bucky holding Cap's shield during their fight.
