Everything isn't finished, yet. How do we know they're going to leave the "garage" looking like that?

In regards to the queue, they could and should have done more, but I say let's wait and see. They could have something up their sleeves.

I really don't care about the queue...they need to have a big standby reserve area. That's the best way to do it. I don't want DM lines cutting out into the street. As long as it can handle large crowds I'm ok with it.

I know they need a large standby reserve area. Definitely better than having it cut into the street. I'm fine with that. My issue is that it's unbelievably minimally themed. That's my issue, especially since it'll probably not even be the "extended" queue but just something that'll always be used, since if they didn't increase capacity compared to Florida, it'll always be packed.

Oh, I'm definitely reserving my final judgment till I see it in person. We're just discussing based on what we've seen so far.

Agreed.

When they took the Transformers extended queue they attempted to theme it up a little. Of course going into a pristine red-and-white switchback tent doesn't really match the NEST theme. So they dirtied it up, added some props along the edges and installed the HD monitors. I distinctly recall Universal getting a lot of praise on the internet for it, even I was impressed.

And then suddenly there was payback for that effort. Due to the queue being outside, many of the props started to wither and with close proximity of the guests quickly they began to take damage. It didn't help that many of them weren't manufactured props, but simply military-looking junk that Universal just bought. So when the request would be sent in for repairs, nobody knew what to do about it. Add in the fact that the themeing actually worked too well. When people step into that queue, they aren't happy to be spending the next hour in a filthy-looking army supply yard. Their thought doesn't go to theme, it goes too, "Well poop, look at this wait."

I'm not saying Universal should be intentionally not themeing the large switchback area, I'm just saying that it's just kind of pointless. No matter what people are not going to be happy they're there. The best solution is the TV monitors and employing entertainment for those things. Once they enter the main queue, it'll start ramping up the experience as they get closer. It's just smarter.

Some of the big differences with Transformers queue and Minion Mayhem is the bulk of Transformers queue is highly themed, indoors, and 100% immersive once you step foot into the actual ride building.

Now look at Minion Mayhem, after walking up to a very large and impressive facade the first thing you'll do is step right into Grus house and depending on the wait, you'll be immediately thrown into a sea of un-themed switch backs, taking you right out of the story and environment.

Could you imagine Indiana Jones queue at Disneyland entering the temple and then immediately exiting into minimally themed switch backs? Do you think that ride would get the praise it gets if it did that? Heck, one of the biggest criticisms of DCAs Tower of Terror vs its Orlando counter part, the lack of a large and immersive garden queue.

Queue lines matter, and when the bulk of that line is un-themed, its a problem. Especially when you have a large impressive facade that suggests a highly themed, immersive experience once you step foot into that house.

^ Ryan, bingo bingo bingo! Spot on to what I'm thinking as well. Universal shouldn't just keep the "it's not just good, it's good enough" mentality for EVERYTHING, just as it does with the Simpsons.

I literally have nothing to add, your post was brilliant. That's literally everything I was going to say. A barren minimally themed switchback queue is the easy way out. The biggest reason why it doesn't fit Despicable Me is because you have a fantastic facade and you supposedly enter Gru's house, but then boom, a plain theme park switchback queue is on the other side. With Transformers, a large portion of the queue is indoors and amazingly themed. The outdoor section isn't that big, and even then, a switchback queue for Transformers still fits better for that ride than it does for Despicable Me.

Great examples with Indiana Jones and Tower of Terror. To me, the queue is half the experience. Not enclosing or theming most of the queue to Gru's house is just like (to me) if you enter Hogwarts and then BOOM it's just a plain queue, with minimal theming until further on.

Okay, I do agree with the fact that the facade brings attention to an experience you may get that won't quite match up. However, I still say we're basing this off of viewing a portion of the queue on the far right of the complex, and if Orlando's is any indication, you do get to enter Gru's house right after you enter the queue, and then it vibes off.

After all, do you expect to enter the house and then come into a portion of his upper house that involves large amount of switchbacks? Not really.

Hate to say that it's a necessary evil, but once again this is all so very pointless until we actually see the finalized product.

I'd argue that JP has pretty much no queue theming and manages to be real good overall still, but I'm really sick of talking about queues.

I knew you'd bring up that point ;) haha. Jurassic Park is an exception in my opinion for multiple reasons.

And what's there to talk about in the ride itself? It's a simulator....yayyyyy. ;)

Anyone wanna dream up ideas for a holiday overlay for Minion Mayhem? What would the story be?

Gru transforms his lab into a wonderful holiday version and he zaps the guests with the minion ray turning the guests into the minions then Gru and the girls guide you to the Minion training grounds (now a holiday version from Minion Rush) The catus is decorated with Christmas lights. The lasers  will be red and green. When the minions say stop, then Santa's sleigh with the Santa minion on it pushes the two minions. Gru tells the minions (riders) to help cross the chasm with the minion hand, then the banana comes as usual. Then the minion falls and grabs the banana. The construction zone will be decorated for Christmas. The part where the machine part is will be decorated too and Vector comes in and tries to zap the minions (riders) but the gravitational force pulls him up along with Gru,the girls, and the minions (riders). The machine room comes and Gru,the girls,Vector, and the Minions (riders) fall down. Then the Super Silly Fun Land portion will be played as normal. When the Minion ray zaps the riders turning back into their human form, the lab lose the Christmas spirit. Gru says "Aw man.da human again" as normal and after, he says "My lab lost the Christmas spirit".

No I haven't dude, you know i'm just teasing. Hence the winky face lol...I'm actually really excited for it to open and to ride it and to finally take my mom to USH again. I'm just teasing that we have a lot of simulators and since they're so similar there's nothing to discuss. You know that we as USH fans always laugh and groan that we have a high concentration of simulators. Despite that, I'm actually extremely excited for Minion Mayhem, especially since I love the movies. I was just teasing USH and it's obsession with simulators.

Just to note, 2014 is going to be unusually geared towards families, specifically children in the SoCal area. Universal is essentially opening up a new childrens' area, whereas Knott's is revamping Camp Snoopy (and will be the target of their 2014 campaign). I imagine Disney will follow suit. When the new tour stuff opens up next year, we'll see a return to the "Summer of Survival"-esque marketing.

This year it's all about the kids. Even Springfield will be a kid-friendly addition.

While true, Springfield in itself is all about fun foods and whimsical themeing, which is as kid friendly as it gets.

Magic Mountain is also updating their Bugs Bunny World kiddie area. Universal, Knotts and Six Flags are having the battle of the kiddie lands.

Disney is the only one to not have anything new this year, although they did open the new Fantasy Fair area last year. I think it'll be great to put some attention on the kids at USH. I think it's much needed.

Although I really hope that sometime soon they'll build something that isn't a simulator (dark ride please?) and is geared towards the whole family. My grandma used to LOVE ET, it was her most favorite ride, next to Pirates of the Caribbean.
