It is also one of my favorite rides ever, but I still think IOA is a fantastic park without the ride. I'm a fan of JP, Toon Lagoon, LC, and the soon to be opened WWoHP. If-well, when Universal has to shut down Spiderman, the park will be able to survive. I'm just concerned about how construction on whatever the replacement for MSHI will work out. It's not like LC, the temporary bridge to connect Port of Entry to Toon Lagoon would be HUGE!

If they do decide to re-do marvel super hero island... what will they retheme all the rides to? Strom force acceleration, dr.doom's fearfall, spiderman, Icredible Hulk coaster and all of the shops!

From Mouse Planet:

Two action-packed rumors have been winding their way through the Entertainment Department of your friendly neighborhood theme park:

First, factions within Entertainment are arguing that the perfect time is approaching to introduce walk-around Marvel superheroes at Disneyland. This fall, Mickey’s Halloween Party is returning to Disneyland, since the popularity of World of Color precludes continuing the hard-ticket trick-or-treat event at Disney California Adventure. Because the night-time water show is DCA’s primary focus and sole marketing focus, they couldn’t very well kick all the day guests out of the park a few hours before the show started.

During this year’s twice-weekly Halloween parties, all visitors will be allowed to wear costumes—normally a no-no for adults at Disneyland. So under the guise of a costume party/special event, Spider-Man and friends might not look so out of place at the Magic Kingdom. The park has always been uncomfortable with showcasing walk-around characters who aren’t readily identifiable with a park attraction or the Disney studio.

The one exception was Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Orlando, since its theme incorporated the entire spectrum of movies and television. The Power Rangers, for instance, have never gotten a gig at Disneyland, though they have been appearing at Disney’s Hollywood Studios since 2007 (a run that will end next month following the sale of the franchise back to their original owner). The Studios won’t have access to the Marvel characters for the foreseeable future, however, due to a licensing agreement with arch rival Universal.

Second, the rumor has resurfaced that this may be the last year that the Candlelight Procession is held at Disneyland. Entertainment is again pushing the idea of moving the holiday event from Town Square to DCA’s Hyperion Theater and charging tickets for it. To increase capacity (and revenue), Disney has in previous years tried holding the recital at the Fantasyland Theatre and selling seats as part of dining and VIP packages.

Both ideas still must be signed off on by resort president George Kalogridis.

BTW, I don't think Marvel and Disney mix.

Disney to distribute "Iron Man 3" and "The Avengers"

The Walt Disney Studios, Paramount Pictures and Marvel Studios announced they have reached an agreement under which Paramount will transfer its worldwide marketing and distribution rights to Disney for Marvel Studios' The Avengers and Iron Man 3. Paramount will remain the worldwide distributor of the upcoming films, Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger, as well as the previously released Iron Man and Iron Man 2.

Under terms of the new deal, Disney will pay Paramount $115 million for the transfer of the distribution rights to Iron Man 3 and The Avengers to be paid on the theatrical release dates. These monies will serve as a minimum guarantee against the distribution fees.

"In completing this agreement, Disney will now assume worldwide marketing and distribution of 'The Avengers' and 'Iron Man 3' and leverage these two highly-anticipated films across the multiple global platforms of The Walt Disney Company," said Rich Ross, Chairman of The Walt Disney Studios. "We appreciate the tremendous momentum that Paramount established with these iconic Marvel characters and look forward to propelling the brand even further in the coming years."

"Five years ago, when Paramount and Marvel made our initial deal, both our businesses were in very different places," said Brad Grey, Chairman & CEO of Paramount Pictures. "We are grateful for the partnership we have had with the terrific Marvel team over these years and proud of the work we have done together. Today, this new agreement is the right deal for Paramount, for Marvel and for Disney. We look forward to working together on 'Thor' and 'Captain America,' and we wish Disney and Marvel the utmost success, in what we know will be a very productive and wide-ranging partnership."

"Paramount has been a wonderful partner in helping Marvel Studios bring our characters to the big screen," said Alan Fine, Office of the President, Marvel Worldwide, Inc. "This agreement makes sense now that Marvel is part of The Walt Disney Company."

Paramount will release Marvel Entertainment's Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger worldwide beginning on May 6 and July 22 of 2011, respectively. The Avengers will be licensed to Epix under Paramount's existing pay television arrangement.
Disney is planning a May 3, 2013 release date for Iron Man 3.

Oh great, here comes an Iron Man ride at DHS pretty soon

--- Update ---

However, I just realized, if Disney were to do an attraction about Iron Man, as long as the after ride had interactive elements similar to the interactive stuff after Spaceship Earth, such as the 3D surgery thing, HOWEVER theme it to IM's computer where they can build cars, robotics etc... that would be neat.

As long as Universal has Marvel Island, there will be no Marvel attractions in Disney World.

I could have sworn that the contract stated that it was for those specific characters associated with the attractions already open east of the Mississippi. Hulk, Spiderman, Doom, Xmen, and Captain America.

The only other reference to IM in MSHI is the one mural of him flying, and the hidden names all over the island.

Very, very interesting..from Screamscape.

(12/3/10) It’s just a rumor at this point, but more than one industry source has mentioned to me that Disney’s board may have been kicking around some options to quietly “buy out Universal” to get the theme park rights to the Marvel characters back and completely under Disney’s control, allowing them to get the most out of their new purchase. In a somewhat related move, Disney did buy out Paramount back in October for the rights to market and distribute The Avengers (May 2012) and Iron Man 3 (May 2013). (Note: Paramount will still retain control for the 2011 Marvel universe films: Thor & Captain America). Could Universal be the next ones invited to have a little chat with Iger?

I don't like this at all. The only things I can see Disney doing with the characters are a photo op and maybe one themed attraction.

I'm sorry, Disney would...well Disneyfy Marvel characters and not take them seriously the way they are suppossed to. If this were the case, Universal better make back ALL of the royalty rights they've paid since IOA opened, plus double that on top of it. Then turn around, get a contract with DC and DC Super Hero Island is born.

The only way that's going to happen is if Disney drops a ton of coin so Universal doesn't have to pay a cent of the change over to the new theme. I don't see that happening. They won't even shell out money for proper attractions in Florida, let alone to get characters they won't use for a while.

I agree. As much as I love MSHI, if Disney just threw TONS of cash at universal, I'd be VERY interested to see what they could do with it. They are riding pretty high off WWHP and they now know if you invest time, effort and $ into something big it can really pay off.
But, still agreeing, I HIGHLY doubt Disney is going to shell out tons of $.

Hypothetically if this were to happen what I would like to happen:

DC takes over the area...Batman, takes over for Spiderman. Joker takes over for Doom, Superman takes over for Hulk, Flash takes over for Storm Force.

Captain America diner is turned into the Green Lantern Diner, Fantastic 4 diner is changed over to a Batman/Robin diner since Doon would now be Joker.

I would tear down the Toon Lagoon theater and either build another coaster for the DC Island, maybe a new type of coaster not currently in Orlando, or make a spinning mouse coaster in the area for Toon Lagoon based on Rocky and Bullwinkle.

I'd rather see a splash battle attraction in this place.

If Disney does this, it is because they are being selfish and bitter and jealous that Universal has a great set of attractions that they want.

What business isn't selfish? I also hardly doubt it's bitterness or jealously. It's just business, and Disney wants to make the most of what they can by trying to bring all of Marvel under the Disney family. It'd be silly for them to not try and attempt a buy out.

If I were Disney I'd be jealous of some of Uni's success and I'd be somewhat peeved that they are the biggest threat to their business in Orlando.

True it would be prudent to see what the financial aspects of it would be, but to be honest, how many places can they put these characters?

DHS is quickly turning into everything else EXCEPT Disney with Pixar, SW, Muppets, IJ, ToT, RRC. The only Disney stuff in there is Mermaid, Animation, and Playhouse.

How many Universal based attractions are in Universal Studios?

As far as jealousy, I'm sure they have noticed the impact of Potter, but they aren't running scared. Disney will always be King of Orlando unless they decide they don't want to be anymore.

True, but USF still has more Uni based attractions in it than DHS has Disney.
