Actually according to notice of commencements filed with the city a little while back, Disney is starting to clear out the parking lot as of yesterday.

Wait, they’re finally starting on it? For real this time?

Absolutely nuts we’re halfway through this decade, Avengers Campus opened four years ago, and they are just now starting to build the Avengers E-Ticket.

This is outrageous how long it has taken to build something like this. This should’ve been open long ago. They waited too long and now the Marvel hype is gonna be long dead by the time it opens.

Well, in their defense the original planned quinjet ride ran into logistical/capacity problems forcing them to scrap the whole thing (although it did survive in some form through the Stark Flight Lab) coupled with the pandemic.

I'm surprised there haven't been any permits for the Eastern Gateway parking garage. They were hyped to build it years ago, ran into local-business resistance, and now with Disney Forward they can proceed.

Probably because they want to start construction in conjunction with Avatar.

One widely held theory is that Avatar land will utilize not only Hollywood Blvd. and the Hollywood Backlot areas, but will also utilize land currently serving as the bus drop off. (A new bus drop off is included in the Eastern Gateway plans with a walkway through the former Carousel Inn lot, which Disney purchased, and a bridge across S. Harbor Blvd.)

If that is the plan, they would need the new bus drop off (and parking garage it is co-located with) built before demo-ing and beginning construction on the current bus drop off area. Given that the Easter Gateway project itself could take two years to complete, it means that Avatar couldn't start construction, essentially, for a minimum of two years. If Avatar is a 3-4 year build, it pushes this project completion to around 2030. This is not shocking to me but given Avatar was teased prior and officially announced in 2024, that's quite a while.

And...in the less likely scenario they build Avatar on the Simba lot next to Pixar Place Hotel, a similar dependency holds true: that parking capacity needs to be replaced elsewhere (with the Eastern Gateway) before construction on Avatar begins.

All this is to say, it *seems* that the Eastern Gateway -- a project Disney has been wanting to do for years -- is the linchpin for Avatar either way. And while it's a substantial project (a 7,000 space garage, bus drop off, walkways, bridges security checkpoint...) it is not "themed," "ride engineering," or "entertainment design," so to speak, and could be tackled in a routine way by consulting architects, engineers, and contractors.

I'm just surprised there's been no permit activity yet, but when something does get filed it will really kick off the Avatar timeline!

If they do use Hollywood...I will be so confused. Not that the land is good but...you have FREE land you can use now..use it.

Then once that's open then fix Hollywood.

Losing Monsters inc and the rest of that area for years without anything new open will not really help the park and the location for Avatar to me makes more sense on the side of the pier...not right when you enter the park

I very much agree with you. I hear so many commentators say how terrible the Hollywood area is but I don't get it -- I think it's really great...or at least has great potential. What I wish they'd add is a replica of Disney's beautiful Hyperion Studio, where Snow White was made. That would tie in to the Carthay Circle Theater (which is where it premiered) to complete the "story" of how this land relates to Disney history.

(The Hyperion Studio could be the entry to a show or attraction about the golden age of Disney animation, or even a Seven Dwarfs coaster...the queue would go through Ink & Paint, past animator desks, and then you switchback down through the dimly lit Screening Room with Snow White playing on-screen before getting on the ride vehicle.)

And, yes, Avatar could benefit from being something you arrive at deeper in the park (e.g., after crossing a transition bridge over Disneyland Dr.). Having it nearly Scene 1 when you enter the park doesn't seem right. I also think the Pixar Place Hotel (which to me is a terrible sightline intrusion on the park) could be re-themed as a Pandora base by surrounding it with lush landscaping and adding themed elements to the roof like communications dishes and a flying vehicle on a landing pad. While it would still be visible from inside th park, it's more excusable to me to see a themed element (the way you see Mission Breakout or Matterhorn) acting as a "Weiner" (in Disney speak) of a land you can go to, than seeing a bland 1980s hotel from the outside world.

I mean, its wasting space but it still has things that eat people over land that is doing nothing

I would love them to just make a Hollywood/movie land and just put more movie based rides and make the land bigger by using the land near it. The Old Tron Arcade and how to train your millionaire buildings can be used or they can demo stuff and make more space to make it work

Mostly what would be nice to stay are

Monsters Inc
The Drawing Class

The rest can be moved around, and what not and with the Trolly no longer around allows them to redo the main street as you walk in

But besides the location, even with the extra space...its just not a large area and rather them get it right over forcing it here

My theories on why Avatar is heavily tipped for HL whether it takes over the whole thing or just the backlot and bus load/unload area:

Disney wants to address HL, the last true remaining troubled area of DCA 1.0 before they branch out into the Simba lot. You don't want HL becoming another Tomorrowland situation. Plus such a land (Avatar) would make a great first impression as you enter DCA.

You can get Avatar into DCA faster by putting it into HL. I believe Cameron wants them to have it open to conicide with part 4 in 2029. perhaps they can setup some sort of temporary bus hub while Avatar is under construction to speed up the process.

Tying into my first point, maybe its also possible the plans for the Simba lot (at least types of attractions, IP yet decided) might be further finalized than what we have believed and because of that, Avatar made the most sense for HL.

I mean if anything TL is the perfect example of why they will most likely not touch Hollywood yet

they also have limited time shows there and so once again makes less sense to hit it first when its also not a great area for the land to be shown off.....if they make the land next to the Pier you can imagine it having a big scale.....it's much harder for me to see the Hollywood area even with the space behind it to be epic like the art

Also for expansion space there is room they can set aside for more Avatar attractions while in Hollywood you are stuck with the land you have.

Anyway, we will see but feels like Avatar is like 5+ years away with two new Avanger rides coming and Coco

People on WDWMagic have pointed out that if you look at the Avatar concept art closely, you can see it aligns with the positioning of the backlot. Some have even speculated that the hangar on the bottom right Is going to be the lands eatery, repurposing the old HL and dine structure.

I'll be impressed if they can fit that big old water feature there and an E ticket plus shops...and a restaurant unless its pretty scaled down

Anyway its all speculation and until the dirt moves...we wont know and hope WDW people are wrong because losing a land for 3 years when DC A ride count hasn't gotten bigger in like 10 years is not ideal for me

If Avatar took over HL the showbuilding for the boat ride would go in the bus load/unload area. IIRC a saw a video where some Disney YouTuber went on Google Earth and did measurements of the Shanghai Pirates boat ride and overlayed it over the bus drop-off and it fit. You might be able to fit a second attraction where the Sunset Showcase theater is.

The main body of water seem in the concept art is more than likely artistic liberties though.

I hope they open up the pools more...too many sold out dates to be letting more people become MK's

Also every round they must get less and less people because it used to open up once a year now its a few times a year
