Exactly. The Hunt probably loses money this way, but Invisible man can only make more money as it's already in the green. The reason I doubt we see this on a high scale is because movies cost so much to make these days and a movie typically costs $15 PER PERSON. Universal is charging $20 for one rental, which you can watch with however many people you want. Of course with social distancing going on, I guess they're betting on that not happening. Of course, the film will certainly get pirated, but them's the breaks. These are unprecedented times and they're at least trying.

Also, films get pirated that are in the theaters. People who pirate stuff rarely pay for things no matter what the situation

It will not unless they charge in the hundreds per showing. Too much money to be made at the theaters. A blockbuster movie could never make as much from VOD as in theaters. It's impossible to make much money from VOD.

piracy wont really change since movies always get out while they are in theaters
now pirates will just have an HD version of the movie, but i doubt if having HD versions of movies will persuade people to watch them. i don't know. piracy will go from pirated movies that were badly recorded in theaters, to pirated movies in HD.

i dont even know if that would make people wanna watch them.
it will be like the pirated episodes of Game of Thrones, but most fans still watched it on HBO legally

Keep in mind these films, Trolls especially, have already sunk millions into pre-release and ongoing marketing efforts. Some studios - like MGM - chose to eat those costs and punt. Universal saw an opportunity to try something different. Maybe their internal pre-release tracking was disappointing. The Hunt was always going to be a Hail Mary at this point, and Emma is targeted at the characteristically narrow prestige fare audiences.

I would not watch a cam but would watch and hd rip if it were in surround sound. But realistically there is too much to watch so I do not care either way. At Least with the shut down I wont run out....

The reality is that all of the market indicators, numbers, and news has indicated that this is a perfect storm extremely likely to be the next great depression. I wouldn't consider myself an expert but I follow this stuff all day and have started to make plans with family assuming that things will get extremely bad. I expect extreme delays and cancellations of major projects. I do wonder how much Disney price increases will hurt them in the coming years as people associate the brand as a luxury even if they discount..

Universal actually did this once before. "Pirates of Penzance" was to be shown in theaters and pay TV the same week. The theaters promptly cancelled all showing and the film, of course, flopped.

Not really a problem now though with Regal and Alamo and I'm sure others completely closing. If the film's already released I don't see a reason to not try and recoup some of those losses now.

If it were up to me I'd release New Mutants on VOD so we can break whatever curse has beset the world.

I have a projector and surround sound and the internet. We arent spending even that much in the depression.

Although there will be better I could probably be satisfied for a good 20 years with a few dirt cheap lamps on this setup.

I think the fact that AMC Theaters are set to close for at least 6 to 12 weeks is a really bad sign for the parks reopening anytime in the next month.

The parks have zero chance of opening within a month. On top of the virus itself likely taking this months out, people are actively canceling future vacations and just like after 9/11, people will be reluctant to travel after this is over. Similar to the fallout of the 2008 recession, they ALSO won’t have the money even if they wanted.

Whenever these parks open, they’ll be relying on locals and employees for a long time.

As far as AMC goes: There’s no big movies coming out until Black Widow inMay, which is likely to be delayed. So AMC almost had no choice. There’s nothing for them to profit off of right now.

So while I know all of you don't care about this stuff, it does relate to the situation we're in and speaks to how long (at minimum) we should expect the parks to be closed for. On top of that, President Trump yesterday said normal life may not resume until July or August (and he was in denial about the situation originally). In other words, get used to this way of life, it looks like this is how we'll be living for awhile. And while i'm not religious, I pray for those who are going to suffer greatly financially because of all of this.

20 bucks is better than nothing and if people are going to pirate it, they're going to do it whether it's released now or when it's released on home video.

Yes. Not disputing that. But for something like Trolls 2, i'd think they'd be able to get away with a bit higher of a price tag. Parents are gonna spend $60 at least at a cinema for a family of 4 so $20 is a helluva deal anyway. And Trolls 2 is going to be a great family movie to kill time and entertain the kids while everyone is stuck at home.

With a movie like The Hunt that came from Blumhouse, it was already cheap to begin with and it already played it's first weekend in theaters. Now theaters are closing so it just makes sense to release it VOD to capitalize as much as possible. So many films are going to feel an impact of this and there's only so many release dates. I think some films are going to have no choice but to move to streaming or VOD.

Where I literally just said the other day I couldn't see The New Mutants going the VOD/streaming route, I now see it as a HIGH probability. I also think we're going to see Disney release Onward on VOD - it's already been in theaters for 2 weeks and many didn't go see it that otherwise would have. With theaters closing now, it can't hurt to throw it out there.
