But in terms of reducing actual writing time, the same has happened to every major fantasy author these days; look at how much time GRRM or Rothfuss are taking to wrap up their series. Not sure anybody would want to see JKR start a new series that she might not have the need or desire to see through...

Last Jedi was 50/50, though. Not saying everyone hates it, but it’s not an apt comparison.

Also, even though films are connected, each film should still be able to standalone, yet connect to the bigger story.

The Lord of the Rings killed this theory pretty dead, in my opinion.

Interesting marketing take....Just saw some commercials on NBC this Thanksgiving morning for FB that I haven't seen previously. The FB commercial spots were all clips of Newt and the fantastic beasts. No Dumbledore. No Grindlewald.....A change in marketing for the film?

Took my family of four to see it. Thought it was average at best. My wife and 19 year old son fell asleep

Disappointing so far in terms of building the series

This was pretty much what I expected it to be: some great worldbuilding in another muddled screenplay. Rowling's flaws as a screenwriter are incredibly obvious, and she needs help with the next one.

the problem with last jedi is that it ruins any set up that JJ brings up with force awakens and in an attempt to "subvert expectations" and "surprise the fans" Rian Jhonson destroys any narrative that could have been carried from the force awakens.
as well as make a movie that felt joyless and without a clear plot. the space chase made a lot of people mad because of how nonsensical and boring it felt and the casino planet drove everyone mad from how it didnt fit with the rest of the movie.

most of the people that love the last jedi defend it because of the amazing visuals and great action and acting

i have a feeling the people this potter movie are doing it for the exact same reasons while ignoring the plot holes and problems the same way fans of the last jedi ignore the giant plot holes and structure issues with that movie
ironic, is kind of poetic.

its funny, when JK Rowling tweeted that the curse child was cannnon with the rest of the books people were so mad at her :lol:
so many people upset at her for saying this, you can see it here:

the replies are nothing but negative lol
"Cursed Child being canon literally breaks half the story of the previous 7 books and disregards established elements. It's Terrible and Changes everything from Goblet of fire on. It has characters that can't possibly exist "
"the story makes n0 sense with the books. everyone is so far out of character and half the stuff that happens is impossible.Cursed Child contradict with whatever you had originally imagined for Harry's future "

I like Last Jedi BECAUSE it subverts so much of what JJ did. JJ was doing a paint by numbers, spiritual remake of the original. Rian said nope. Legitimately, the best part is that it established Poe and Finn as dangerously impatient and Rey as “a nobody.” Because those are actually good, realistic things. Rey can still be the hero without being a Skywalker. Poe and Finn can still win it for the Resistance after making complete asses of themselves. What Rian did was make them far more human and relatable. So many movies/story tie heroics to destiny. As a war movie, Last Jedi is way better than anything before it.

And Cursed Child, with its true antagonist, opens a slew of problems with the canon.

Voldemorte’s daughter. That’s the villain.

After viewing the film tonight I can honestly say the negative hype train is overblown to me. I can see the criticism - especially in terms of the wildly muddled plotlines and some of the character retconning/addition. But overall I still really enjoyed it - I think Rowling should have gone with a book first and then had a screenwriter adapt it. It's clear she has tons of subplots and something of a main plot but with the limitations of a film, she had nowhere to go with half of what she put on the paper.
With that being said - I hope they don't shelve 4 and 5 just yet. Just bring on a legitimate screen writer and cut the many loose threads on what could be a very great story.
This one did up the pace from the first one which markedly improved it.
Most of the plot twists were fun. The final one has me incredibly nervous - I am hoping it is a ruse, which is something Rowling does quite well. If it isn't then we may be headed in a Cursed Child direction.
Jude Law was beautiful as Dumbledore and I still love Newt regardless of what anyone says.
And the complaints about Grindewald also make me tilt my head a bit - not every villain in history is a Voldemort. On the contrary - a smart person with a bold vision and master manipulation tactics, along with charisma, can be incredibly terrifying and dangerous. That's what makes Grindewald a scary villain.
All in all - a good story that got lost in the possibilities of a good novel rather than keeping a streamlined film. Hopefully Rowling will get some help from a screenwriter on the next one.

I..have some opinions.

I love the concepts Joe plays with, and I love the casting and designs of the environments, costumes, and creatures. But the downfall of Grindlewald to me; lies in that she should've had someone in the writing room with her. A lot of the concepts in the film, would run a hell of a lot better with written material. And to me, Grindlewald is a much more intriguing character than Voldemort could be. Everything about his character and performance, is great; and I would not change it.

They just need to find their balance in writing and find a way to also focus on both the beasts, and the larger story.
