Can we talk about how the main gate postage is ugly? Usually it looks so epic under that arch but the way they positioned those three properties just looks terrible, bland, and boring.

(10/13)

It was a success!
This is the order I went through all the attractions.

Insidious
GB
TCM
Weeknd
UM: EB
DE: DV
AQP
TT: ETB
Monstrous 2

I have no issue with any of the houses or terror tram. All of them were fun.

From now on, Early Access should start with Curious George lot and lower lot. This should’ve been implemented last year. 2023 had the bigger name brands but 2024 is way more efficient. The lines for AQP and Monstrous needs work. I prefer lower wait times so I can get through the entire event over bigger name IPs and barely getting through houses.

Gonna start backwards from form--shows first, then scarezones, then houses. Want to start with the weakest thing from the event, and then go to the best.
___________________________________________________________
Experiences/Shows
- Late Night With Chucky -

I think the simpler I am with this the better--Late Night with Chucky is a good time that varies depending on how willing you are to spend your time. Audience engagement is great--the Chucky puppet and puppeteer is fantastic and I do love how loosey goosey they let the performer get. But at the end of the day, the absolute need to take this on a engagement sets this back be the easy weak link.

I'm hoping that given FFN is potentially bringing over the 4D cinemas, that we get to see stuff done for the Osaka events brought over to HHN. I have a nagging suspicion on Chainsaw Man that I will bring up once the speculation threads begin to come into place, but I am glad DWT continues to find great use.
7/10

- Terror Tram: Enter The Blumhouse -
The changing of the formula of Terror Tram, to be more rooted and based with a "Gauntlet" style series of vingette is absolutely the best choice that they could've made. I love how much the energy felt compared to 2022's; and the use of the staged sequences makes it feel almost more like a proper "walkthrough" experience.

Room for improvement to be sure, I would've wished for Hollywood Harry due to the 60th Anniversary of the park, but I am perfectly happy with what I got. Hopefully this is the format going forward.
8.5/10

- The Purge: Dangerous Waters -
Without question this is probably the best show I have seen in HHN. HHN and Action Horizons made a show using The Purge that feels not only completely in line with The Purge, but feeling completely in line with the horror event it is apart of.

Pacing is brisk and active, the kills are graphic and violent, the tone is dark and fitting of the scenario. This feels like something that should of always of existed at HHN--and I am glad it is here and hope it stays.
9.5/10

Scarezones
- Chainsaw Punkz -

The sad thing to me is that I think the concept of this zone could've actually been great! But confusing music choices, and a lack of actors makes this easily the weakest link of the event. I kind of hope they just absorb this scarezone, and the NY Street one to be one complete scarezone going forward. I think that's unironically the best strategy that they can do.
6/10

- Skull Lordz -
So this one is a lot better than Punkz. It's still a simplistic theming, but in it lies really great and aggressive actors, combined with amazing costume design. The display adorned with the fire tower is also really cute; and the music selection was more apt.
8/10

- Murder of Crowz-
This scarezone is cute as hell. The scareactor interactions with all the crowz is absolutely amazing, and the crowz themselves are jaw dropping. Really glad to see them get a dedicated area, especially with the care placed to represent the family.

Really hoping they get the house treatment next for a "Scarezone to House", would love to see the family grow further.
8.5/10

- Luchadores Monstruosos -
The energy in this scarezone is buzzing with positive vibes. Probably the scarezone I actually got scared in, with amazing scareactors representing their "Monsters" expertly. Set design in this scarezone is also amazing with fantastic vingettes and use of the screens to represent the Luchadores.
8.5/10

Haunted Houses
- A Quiet Place-

If I had to describe this house in a way that makes sense I'd say it as this:

This would make an amazing daytime walkthrough experience--one that'd easily be better than The Walking Dead Attraction. The way they replicated the film and made it work for an experience like this is tremendous, with great pacing that would work great for the park itself.

Nooooooooooot so much for HHN. It's not scary in the slightest--and operates more as a fantastic dark ride. It's not the worst house done by Universal--nor is it bad, but it tonally doesn't feel like a HHN house. Amazing sets, fantastic performers and phenomenal creature designs can't shake up the fact that it fails to scare or bring suspense to the whole affair.
7/10

- Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire -
This one falls into a similar pitfall of AQP in non-intensity, but it actually does make up for it as it did get me quite a few times. Specifically with the first half in intensity, there are some great performers who managed to get me in the course of it. Easy ones is the sewer sequence, Vigo the Carpathian, the Scoleri brothers and Slimer.

The set design once again is phenomenal, as is the effects. One of the three houses that genuinely does something exciting with verticality; I love how they intermixed the theatrical to this house. It's a "Spooky" kind of night--a fun "Spooky" that isn't scary. Is it better than 2019? yeah, definitely a lot better. The way they mix Frozen Empire with the history of the franchise feels more apt.
8/10

- Dead Exposure: Death Valley -
Another Orlando original! Except it uses the brand name and turns it on it's head! This is probably the first house that made me genuinely startle and jump at the event. Love it for that reason; even if I do wish this adopted the strobe element from Orlando's.

What stands out to me, is that this is the first of two houses that uses a generic concept this year to shape something wholly vast and varied. The variety represented and used with this experience is great; and its amazing to see what exactly was done with a house rooted in "Conspiracy". Favorite scene easily has to go to MONKEE, but I love what risks they take here. Glad to see more Orlando concepts get a Hollywood spin--hoping Scary Tales or Goblin's Feast is next.
8/10

- MonstruDos: The Nightmares of Latin America -
First time with Monstruos! Had to get multiple runs in this house to grasp and understand it, and I think the thing I love the most with this house is how well composed it is. Each story has time to breath and grow--even if El Cucuy gets the most time (albeit likely due to the ease of reusing assets from him); with a really fun set of surprises.

While not as scary as Death Valley--the tone of this house was perfect and complex. I really hope we get El Charro expanded to a "Darkest Deal" type house, where we get to see those who Charro tricks and traps as he tries to escape hell. Also love the inclusion of the Isle of Dolls. It's probably the one legend I've wanted to see translated for the event; so hoping this gets expanded further.

All in all--really glad I got to enjoy El Muerte--and glad to see this becoming a fixture of the event.
8/10

(1/3, will need to triple-post to break this from being a massive wall of text).

- Universal Monsters: Eternal Bloodlines -
Me giving a UM house a higher ranking than I've ever given to a UM house?! Shocking I know.

I don't know why--and I don't know how, but the moment I experienced it on night one there was something about the house that made me genuinely wonder "how the hell do I kind of like this". And on the second night, I made sure to get multiple runs to comprehend this feeling. And I think the answer is a weird one.

This to me, in a strange and weird element; is probably what I wanted to see of Universal Monsters. The tone of this house is absolutely great, the scenes of Saskia and Bride going against the trio is fun and there are scares that got me at multiple times. There are obviously issues to be had, specifically with the transitional and how badly integrated they are; and while I do think it hinders it from going higher, I do genuinely love what I got of UM.

I don't understand either, but I got really good runs to make me think this way.
8.5/10

- The Weeknd: Nightmare Trilogy -
People would expect me to have this as my favorite house of the year, and I wouldn't blame them. The Weeknd: AHN is still my all time favorite IP house. It did everything right to me in a way that wasn't possible in my head, and while I absolutely love Nightmare Trilogy--I don't necessarily think it hits the highs that After Hours Nightmare does.

The scale of this house is absolutely phenomenal. The verticality on display, the lighting and sound design, and the practical effects sprinkled in this house are amazing. It's also a lot more scary than After Hours Nightmare, giving more genuine startles (Especially with the finale scare). But I think my problem is one that might solve itself as we get further and further into HUT's rollout.

The road of the trilogy, is one that leads to rebirth. And my biggest problem with this house is that I feel it is oddly out of context. As if things are missing to this house that should've been clarified in a way that it wasn't done. Because otherwise, if things were more cleared up; this would probably be my favorite house of the year.

Should this be the end of The Weeknd at HHN? Probably. Once HUT comes, the end will be coming for The Weeknd brand as a whole--and it'd make sense that Abel would want to distance from horror for a while. Hopefully, the close collaboration of this house could lead to Hollywood working with more music artists, like Kendrick Lamar, Billie Ellish and others.
9/10

- Insidious: The Further -
This one is right next to The Weeknd as what was nearly my favorite house of the year. And the only thing setting it back, is that it doesn't go into depth like what my favorite house does.

Let's be clear to this: Insidious is probably the most terrifying house I went through this year. It's not even close where it comes to scares, Insidious genuinely did a lot for me in this. Might help the fact that I've never seen the films--nor ever want to. Might help the fact that I have never done the other houses either. But the point is that at the end of the day, Insidious is unrelenting in instilling fear to me.

This house, does exactly as I expected and then more to make me unnerved and antsy. The simplicity of this house, allows you to hone in on the actor intensity and how long the house truly feels. It's kind of amazing that you have a hard track of time with this house to where it feels like you are infact in the Further. And I love it for that.

If it was as comprehensive as my number 1, then it might honestly be a top 10 of all time houses. But for now, it is comfortably at 2nd place.
9/10

- The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Legacy of Leatherface -
Texas 2012 is in my top 10 all time favorite haunted houses. And I think that comes down to the fact that at the end of the day, Texas Chainsaw thrives upon simplicity and effectiveness to make you terrified about the family of cannibals and of Leatherface.

So for me, The Legacy of Leatherface's approach of simplicity amongst showing a comprehensive deconstruction of humanity dials up what I had thought of with Texas Chainsaw Massacre to where it might honestly be a Top 5 All Timer.

From the moment you enter the house, to the moment it ends, it is a complete and comprehensive experience to me. It is unrelenting like Insidious, but as opposed of scares, they do so visually in showing you how the Sawyers took care of their meat. How they happily destroyed human lives for their profit and craving. It is genuinely amazing to see how Murdy came up with the crap that he did; as a lot of the house greatly unnerved me.

Add in then, the amazing performers that make up the Sawyer family. I genuinely love how you got to see the strengths of each Sawyer family in a way that works amazingly for the house--while focusing in further on what Leatherface is capable of as a killer. Leatherface feels more and more like a character now than ever before due to this house; because of how they integrated the masks from the franchise as a whole. It's amazing touches like that, with expert pacing and scenic direction that makes up one of the best houses Hollywood has ever done.

I do not want to go through this house again due to the scent, but I absolutely love this house and would go back in if because of seeing the craft of horror at it's finest. And I think that's what I'm happy about the most.
9.5/10

(2/3, got some photos to post so that will be the last).

We attended HHN for our first time on Sept 26. We have attended HHN Orlando since 2016 but we wanted to attend Hollywood at least once. We did attend Universal during day starting with early entry to Super Nintendo World so our feelings about HHN are influenced by that. We were quite tired early.

We were a group of 10 for HHN and we all had early entry. Maybe it was just our bad luck but it seemed incredibly crowded. I'm sure having such a large group also played a part in what we were able to get done. We had an OK time....not good but not bad. We were able to do Insidious, Ghostbusters, The Weeknd, Universal Monsters and the Terror Tram before we were too exhausted to continue. Having to go from the upper lot to the lower lot so many times during the day was just draining.

We enjoyed the Terror Tram because it was a completely new to us. Express to standby ratios (?) just sucked. Line ops were just yelling at standby to fill in every available space. I get it was crowded but it was just stressful. I am glad we got to attend but I'm not in any rush to return.

Finally got to attend this last weekend (Saturday night)! We just did the general admission + early entry and we got to do every maze and the Terror Tram at least once (we did Dead Exposure and Monstruos 2, twice each). We could've done more HHN-related stuff but we decided to take the time to sit down, relax, enjoy a meal at Three Broomsticks, have a Stay Puft Marshmallow (skip this one, it wasn't great) and ride Forbidden Journey and Transformers. We saw the Purge last year and didn't care for it and what we watched for Chucky on YouTube made that an easy skip for us, too.

Last year we did the Unlimited Express, which was great but I don't think we were left wanting after general admission + early entry. We had a bad run on a house or two but I still didn't feel like.. "cheated" out of anything given how much we saved overall. We, of course, made a beeline for Insidious/Ghostbusters, first. Daylight or not, that probably saved us untold time and suffering by avoiding that parking garage queue. No regrets there.

Here is my house ranking:

1) Dead Exposure: Death Valley
2) Monstruos 2: The Nightmares of Latin America (basically tied for first)
3) Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (missing an actor or two, but not enough to detour from the fun I had)
4) The Weeknd: Nightmare Trilogy
5) Insidious: The Further
6) Universal Monsters: Eternal Bloodlines
7) Texas Chainsaw Massacre: Legacy of Leatherface (missing almost all the scare actors, have to judge based on what I experienced, sorry)
8) A Quiet Place
9) Terror Tram: Enter the Blumhouse

Alrighty, I've paid my last visit to HHN so it's time for a final house rank. My overall feeling is that this was a solid year with houses that wouldn't necessarily enter the hall of fame discussion but are satisfying and successful on their own terms. The lows, though, are pretty darn low.

I do think Murder of Crowz and Luchadores rank among the best scare zones we've ever had, though. It feels like the creative team is taking a more iterative approach to them by building on successful concepts rather than just repeating them, or settling for the bare minimum. Hopefully there's a way to similarly "plus up" the other two zones. I love that our event starts with a gauntlet of actors, but if you catch it at an understaffed moment or if they simply miss you in the crowd, it can feel lifeless, especially compared to the other two. That's kinda my biggest note this year: re-think the first two scare zones.

Loved Dangerous Waters again. We should have had it years ago. (A-). I'm starting to learn that I'm not a Terror Tram guy. I always love going back there, but I don't think there's any concept that could really spark an interest for me at this point, and when you remove what was hands down the best part (Nope sets and Us actors), I don't see the point. Only did it twice. (C-).

The Chucky show, I'm so torn on. I love the idea, but each one I caught felt more like a proof of concept rather than a fleshed-out idea, like it's a rough draft for a final project. I dunno. I say mess around with it a bunch and bring it back next year, hopefully it'll be on its feet. (C)

Also, not sure if it's just me, but I'm sensing some fatigue from the GP. Could be the ticket price, or a disinterest in the IPs, or the poor ops making the ticket price hurt even more, but the crowds were definitely a lot thinner this year, and even the folks that did turn up just didn't seem as hyped as years past. I went a total of three times and the energy was noticeably flat. Idk, it's a purely anecdotal observation but I wouldn't be surprised if the air's starting to leave the balloon, so to speak.

Okay, rankings:

1. TCM: Legacy of Leatherface: I was iffy on the "multiverse" concept or whatever it is, but at the end of the day, it's an impossible IP to screw up. There's a reason it's among them most enduring horror movies of all time (the 50th Anniversary is selling out in theaters all over). It's got everything you want, and this house just delivers. The house is gross and visceral and the actors are great (the best in any house this year, if you ask me). Not sure really what more to say other than houses like this are what keep me coming back to HHN. I dock it slightly because it is a little too familiar in spots -- as much as I enjoy it, a break would be fine. (A-)

2. A Quiet Place: I get the criticism that's it's basically just Stranger Things again. It's mostly puppets/animatronics and the actors are "performing" more than they are scaring. That said, in my opinion, this blows every ST house we've ever had out of the water, and it made my realize how good these kind of houses can be when done correctly. It's not perfect (there's a flat moment here and there), but not only does it plant you in the movie, it conveys the movie's terror in unique and very specific ways. No other house this year does that. (A-)

3. Monstruous 2: With the other monster concept starting to really falter, we're lucky to not only have this one, but also have it hitting so hard. I love the creativity and atmosphere -- it's a real "house of horrors" in the sense that each segment is different, but it still has a cohesive and connected feeling overall. It's inventive, it's intense, and I can only hope that they keep the momentum up. I think it's one of the main things that makes the Hollywood event unique. (A-)

4. Insidious: The Further: The Red-Faced Demon is an all-timer. Just a scary figure and the way he's utilized here is great; some of the best moments of the entire event. When he's not around, though, this one definitely kinda drags, like there wasn't as much effort put into those sequences. But I still like the property, I really liked the concept of the house this time around, and I think it actually might have my favorite facade after The Weeknd. It just had a little too much "Where's Poochie?" energy. (B)

5. The Weeknd: Nightmare Trilogy: So yeah, the facade. It's such a highpoint. It hyped me up every time I entered the soundstage. The house itself is good but doesn't match the last version. It felt like it was mostly a lot of ideas that hit the cutting room floor last time. I really loved the repurposed Chucky robots, but outside of those and a couple other inspired moments, I thought it lacked the gonzo energy and weirdness that was so prominent in the last one. (B-)

6. Dead Exposure: The first time I went through this, I thought it might end up being my HOTY, but repeat runs were not kind. (I think it was the thrill of seeing that gorilla and getting that blast of AC on opening night.) This is a KSF house that's well beyond it's prime, especially in the way it leans on familiar gimmicks. I will give props to the gorilla, though, and if the house is properly staffed, there are some intense scares (especially the last two rooms). But overall, houses like this encapsulate both my aversion to original mazes, and my wariness of borrowing too much from Orlando. Less of both, please. (C-).

7. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire: Every suspicion I had was confirmed. The main issue is it relies too much on set pieces, and if they aren't firing correctly (and most of the time, they aren't firing correctly), things get confusing and awkward. I had one run where literally every cue was off, and the actors were straining to sync up their triggers and not interacting with guests at all. One of the roughest things I've ever seen at this event. This is an Orlando house, and by that I mean it's just something for people to look at rather than experience. And again, when the stuff to look at isn't even functioning properly, what's the point? (D).

8. Eternal Bloodlines: I don't wanna pile on with negativity. (D-)

They still do that!?!? They haven’t done that since like 2015! Back then it was from the scare patrol.

I went last night

I got on Ghostbuster's 3 times, The Weekend 4 Times, and TCM, Blumhouse, Insidious and Bloodlines once, I also watched The Purge and Scarmoney at 8:30 PM.

The Longest Line I waited in was 10 mins. I could have stayed longer but went to Six Flags to walk on 7 houses there and see the last Sliders Show.

This Year was great outside it just being too busy even when its a slow year. I love HHN but I just wish there was a way to not Conga line it, I get it has to happen with these crowds but I just wish we had a way to let lots of people in and allow more scares.

Thats the only thing I can really complain about, outside of that I like them opening the upper and lower lot for EA. It just spreads crowds out more, having two shows and the Terror tram works very well to people eat people as well.
The Chucky show was fine but think they should have risked it more with the questions, Purge is always something you can just walk into a few mins before and have a great time.
My Ranking of my favorite houses this year are
1) The Terror Tram, Enter the Blumhouse
2) Quiet Place
3) Monstrous
4) Blood Lines
5) Ghost Busters
6) Insidus
7) TCM
8) The Weekend
9) Dead Exposure

I know....I know I am not on the same page for the houses but thats fine its my list and I'm good with the houses I enjoy having less wait times. TCM and Insdious are great with full actors but....that for me was not always the case and while fun.....I just enjoyed the sets, costumes and what not in the other houses. Some people like the darker ones but I enjoyed Bloodlines because I could see all the details and felt like a ride I was walking through.
Terror Tram, I just love it.....its always fun and combine it with Blumhouse and I think I could go on this a million times
Quiet Place had great sets and amazings Pupppets/AA's. Monstrours had some great enegerfy to it and the actors that really got into it are amazing

I wont rank the scaze zones but shout out to the Crowz for being so much fun. The energy on Parisaa street was insaneeeeee this year shout out to the Creature of the Black Lagoon actor and just the entire scareactors in this zone and everywhere else.

Looking forward to 2025 and ready to see what they have in store.

Had a great time last night. Did the lower lot houses twice except for Bloodlines and all the houses at least once. Even got to do the final Tram which was amazing! Although at year’s was stronger, I had a lot of fun this year! Those low wait times helped lol Here’s to next year!

I’ll be the contrarian, as this year progressed, and granted I went only three times, I found the event to just be less and less exciting to attend and very “dull”, especially in comparison to other Halloween events I attended.

While not terrible, I think A Quiet Place and Universal Monsters really brought down this event a lot for me - and something about the atmosphere was really off. Putting up this year’s event against last year’s, I feel there was a dip in environment and maybe even entertainment.

I also sadly never got a fully cast TCM run through, which really made me cranky.

I love HHN, and I still think it clears any of the other major SoCal Haunts, but its reputation has really started to diminish for me as being the “scary horror” event it once was, and I’m scared of it only getting worse and worse.

I hate to say it, but I agree with you in regards to what I bolded. I had a FFP, like I do every year, and after my first trip in September I just… never went again, either in September or October, because something about this year just didn’t motivate me to want to.

I finally went again last night with hopes and memories based off when November dates last used to be a thing; we didn’t do early entry, and instead got there before 6 for free parking, then had dinner and drinks while waiting for the initial 7pm crowd to get through the gates before we went in around 7:45. Saw The Purge, did Monstruous, and then got in line for AQP only to find it snaking endlessly left (past Pets) and then right into the hidden little nook around the corner of the Despicable Me facades.

Decided we didn’t want to wait, got one of the Stay Puft S’mores only for the chocolate to be hard as a rock and the marshmallow to be cold, and then after hearing a lady in certain political garb audibly complaining about the existence of trans people to the person she was with (after hearing someone else having a loud and offensive charged conversation at Margaritaville when we were having drinks), we just decided to leave.

It’s some sort of combination for me of the event growing too popular for its own good, the lineup this year not having a “wow” factor for me, the fact people are just getting ruder and meaner and more entitled every year since the lockdown ended (which makes being stuck in crowds full of them increasingly unbearable), the Express situation we’ve all discussed ad nauseam, the overall spooky atmosphere being a shadow of its former self, and so on — it’s wild that we had more fun at Knott’s this year by far and that the most rewarding thing about last night was how quickly we got from our parking spot to back on the freeway to go home.

In the speculation discussion, some of us had been saying one of the biggest criticisms overall is the lack of actual horror inserted into the event. I enjoyed this year since I could actually get through all of the houses.

The downfall started in 2019. HHN still has had fun events since then but it hasn’t been scary. Post-blip, I enjoyed 2021 and would’ve enjoyed 2023 if there wasn’t such long lines for GA. It’s a problem when you buy EA and still can barely get through all of the houses.

Also, IP wars will continue with Six Flags in business. I will still go to HHN but this year’s crown belongs to KSF. KSF has been good for several years now and is finally being acknowledged.

Get rid of the silly IP houses and incorporate pure fear. No more Weeknd houses either. Just because it’s Hollywood doesn’t mean you can’t get back to the essence of what 2016 brought. I loved 2017 but that’s a discussion for another day.

I don’t have any expectations for 2025 but will be tuning in for the rumors as usual.

Chucky was the house with the longest lines last year

It was a fun house

The issue this year was partly desgins somethings like Ghost Busters....for such a Big IP most of the house feels....like normal and nothing that crazy like in 2019 when we had the Big state Push finale...that just felt epic and this year the house was just more flat. Even the car attacking you felt whatever for some reason compared to the bus coming at you in the Last of Us house last year using a pretty similar set up

We had two dark houses thus year and sure they got lines but they might get lines but with the event how it was clearly the IPs this year just didn't hit Demographic's the same as last year

I know many will call me crazy but yeah a Demon Slayer and Resident Evil house I think would have drawn more people into the event.....clearly the IPs and somewhat lack of Epic houses affected the event and of course I know they could not come to an agreement but if not Resident evil then 5 Nights at Freddy's. I think Video game IPs are pretty valuable and have hardcore bases because playing a Horror game your normally pretty invested into its world and characters

But also people lovvvved houses like Dead Exposure which i found...meh. So I don't know what the fans want sometimes

Chucky was the longest line features but so was Exorcist Believer and Stranger Things.

Another issue is we are missing the Backlot. That plays a role into what made HHN special.
