It's kind of reassuring that I'm not crazy for thinking this year felt "off." I've only been going since 2019, so I don't have as much to compare to as a lot of you, but HHN29 set the bar extremely high for me. I've yet to love zones as much as that year (they haven't even come close since). Even though I enjoyed the houses this year, they just didn't hit the same as all the previous years I've gone. I kept telling my husband something felt "off" about this year and I couldn't place it. Aside from Duality, the zones were fine. There was no dud of a house. F&B wasn't as good as previous years, but not bad enough to blame it on that. We came after the hurricane took out the lagoon show for HHN in the past, so this isn't the first time without that for us either. I still can't exactly place WHAT made this year feel off... it just did. But it's nice to know it's not just me. (I only get to go for a couple nights a year, so it can't be burnout )

Yeah - At first I thought it might just be burnout from attending every year, but I was feeling burned out by week 2 with how quickly I started to realize how "off" this year felt. I kept giving it chances, but it never turned the corner.

So I attended the event three times this year, once at the start of September, the start of October, and the final night. Overall a solid year all things considered, even with some of the choices and challenges making it happen. I’m like many who feel nothing was outright bad but also there’s little to consider outstanding.

10. Triplets of Terror: I regret missing this on the final night because I’m sure I would’ve had a new perspective. It’s a house that I’ll remember wanting more from for sure. Some energetic performers and a unique setting but it was just too brief. I feel like the podcast room could’ve been ditched since it’s already so short, but I understand doing a cohesive fast-forward was what they wanted to do. I’m glad there were some big fans of this one though, that’s always nice to see.

9. Eternal Bloodlines: I never went through with a full cast. I went four times and I know I didn’t see it all which is a shame. I feel the story could’ve been simpler and the globe-trotting aspect should’ve been replaced with the castle alone for a more focused experience like Legends Collide, but I do respect the design choices. There’s some good ping-pong scares and a cool finale but it just felt a little too much with too little happening if that makes sense.

8. Monstruos: Maybe it’s the familiarity with the Hollywood house, I’m not sure, but I tend to forget about this one which makes me feel bad because it’s a fine house. The performers were great, especially the stiltwalkers. I can’t deny the intensity here, but I just never got into it.

7. A Quiet Place: This house didn’t seem to change much on repeat visits, and that’s by its own design. That said, it was enjoyable every time. The soundscape was very intense and the puppets were always fun to see come to life.

6. Slaughter Sinema 2: Although not as scary as the first, it was still a good time. I really don’t have much else to say, it was a solid sequel.

5. Museum: What a weird house. I can’t think of a house with this many strange decisions put into it, and although not all great, I found myself enjoying it a lot. I think this cast improved the most throughout the season, some were really fast and in your face the last night, which helped the haunt tremendously.

4. Ghostbusters: A lot of fun. Tons of variety of characters and scares gave the house a lot of personality and energy, plus the massive scale of it all was cool to see.

3. Major Sweets: Makes me excited to see future F&F houses, because this blew the previous ones out of the water. Claustrophobic and fast-paced with interactive elements makes this a stand-out for sure.

2. Goblin’s Feast: Not much to say that hasn’t been said. Awesome sets, costumes, and performances. My only gripe is that I wish it had one or two more scenes.

1. Insidious: Very good. Fantastic cast. I can’t think of anything I would want more from this house. A well-deserved HOTY.

I didn’t see the zones enough to rank them, but with the exception of Duality (whose scareactors were still great), they were pretty good.

I can agree somewhat that the year did feel a little different, but it was still HHN through and through. I had massive fun every night and every TM working the event gets a big thank you from me. Next year will be an interesting beast with Epic on the way, so I’m curious to see what vibes 2025 brings, especially with Aiello back. And finally a big shoutout to all scareactors, you are all incredible and make HHN what it is every year!

My HHN 33 Rankings-

1. Insidious-
For me, along with most this was a very clear and definitive #1. Given the more unpredictable boo holes, intensity of the cast among having tight hallways in parts of the house, this is what I look for in a haunted maze. I believe Universal needs a couple houses that have this feel per year.

2. Ghostbusters-
This house had beautiful scenery, and a couple rooms had some VERY good scares. This house exceeded my expectations compared to the movie.

3. A Quiet Place-
Having 3 IPs in a row for me, is surprising, however from #3 down, I feel that the quality drops and this and my #4 is almost interchangeable depending on the day. Good sets, good puppets, Universal swung and although they didn’t nail this, it was overall pretty good.

4. Slaughter Sinema 2-
Did this strike the same lightning in a bottle as the first house? Not to me, some of the transitions were long leading to the next room and I feel that there was wasted space in sections in this house. (The first room in Heavy Metal Hell 3D for example) however, a few of the rooms keep it up here at #4.

5. Museum-
If you had told me that I would rank this remotely anywhere near the middle a month ago, I wouldn’t have believed you. My first week trip was in mid September, when I left that week after running this house 4 times, I was disappointed in the execution to say the least… I came back mid October for a week, ran it another 4 times and my last run through I saw some adjustments that made me see the potential. Fast forward to my most recent trip, where I was here to close out the last week of the event, I had 5 good to great run throughs of this house. To be fair though, I didn’t really love any of these bottom 6 houses…

6. Monstrous-
I did this house 10+ times and I don’t know if it was bad luck, timing or all of the above… but my first two trips much like museum, it just didn’t click for me. Luckily, my last trip I got a very intense couple run throughs with a great cast and it put it in the middle for me.

7. Goblins Feast-
Beautiful sets, big sets as well for a tent house. This ranks towards the bottom for me for a couple of reasons, the concept, where some people love the concept of this house, I didn’t love it or hate it. It was just fine. I had a couple “good” walk throughs but I never really got a walk through where I left and got more than one decent scare. However I will say, I loved the scents in this house.

8. Major Sweets-
This was a decent house to me, it broke the F&F “curse” of bad houses. Too many stretches of nothing however, the scares were far apart. Otherwise I like the guest activated triggers and there are a couple scenes in this house that are really fun.

9. Universal Monsters-
This is the first complete miss for me when they’ve done Universal Monsters at HHN. Similar to others ranked low, the resets took long to get their scares in order, add that in with the big sets left so much space where there was just nothing going on. I also don’t love where many of the boo holes were set up, it left them further away and took away the intensity of the house for me.

10. Triplets of Terror-
I wanted to like this one going into it. It was the most unknown prior to the event start. However after running this house 10+ times, I never loved it or even liked it much per se. The concept could’ve been good, but like I have said in a few of my bottom houses, the “scares” weren’t really scares. When you go through many of the rooms there were many scenes but the actors are performing 5-6 feet away. I don’t know if I truly ever got a good scare in this house throughout the whole event, I know that there’s more to houses than the scare factor, but I feel this one missed on many factors.

I’m not going to go too far in depth on the scare-zones, I enjoyed Torture Faire and Demon Queens at times, but they just didn’t hit overall. To me, I wouldn’t normally that as much as I’m more of a house person, but given the fact that I didn’t particularly like 4-5 of the houses this year, the scare zones weigh it down a little bit more overall.

Nightmare Fuel was great, the performers do an amazing job every time and it is a necessity to have a stage show to help with the crowds. We need another show to absorb some of the crowds, the lagoon show will help a little if it makes its return next year.

Was it my favorite year by any means? No. But it’s still the best Halloween event, so let’s hope that they take the feedback they’re receiving and make some adjustments to make HHN34 a great year.

Just got back from Florida today, so writing up my review after attending 4 long nights. Overall, I feel comfortable saying this is the weakest HHN since I started attending in 2014. Based on this thread, I knew to keep my expectations in check and go in with an open mind, and while there weren't any downright awful houses in the lineup, the bottom half of my ranking all had issues that severely hindered their experiences. I have never given six houses below an 8/10 in my time attending the event, and unfortunately my top houses this year are nowhere near GOAT status. House ranking below.

10. Triplets of Terror (5/10, 2 runs): Oof, what a confusing mess. During my first run, I was too focused on trying to follow the house's story without focusing on the actors, which was easy to do when the vast majority have awkward boo holes and don't get close to the guest path. The second time, I simply gave up on figuring out the story and once again had no fear walking through the house, reinforcing it as the weakest of the year. The house feels too contained and made no use of being in a soundstage.

9. The Museum: Deadly Exhibits (6.5/10, 3 runs): My rating may be a little harsh, but the house primarily suffers from boring creature design and victim scares. The cast definitely gave an effort, and my second run on Saturday particularly had a good energy to it. My run on the final night was understaffed and only exaggerated the house's weak spots. The set design was pretty good, and I like the concept. I had a good time with this house, especially since the wait was always short, but it definitely won't be remembered too fondly.

8. Goblin's Feast (6.5/10, 2 runs): This is probably my biggest disappointment of the event. It felt like a comedy house desperately trying to be serious, and while I liked the goblin designs, they were repetitive in a few rooms and too bulky for the cast to really shine.

7. Monstruos: The Monsters of Latin America (7/10, 3 runs): I really like this house until the second half when actors sparse out and puppets/practical effects become the focus. While impressive, they end the house on a pretty boring note, but I can appreciate this in service of the story. The casts were consistently aggressive, and my run on the final night was intense during the first half.

6. Universal Monsters: Eternal Bloodines (7/10, 2 runs): I liked this slightly more than last year's Paris house, but IMO we have reached the point where the Monsters need to rest for a few years. The cast does a decent job despite some weird boo holes placements (and two bungee scares close to each other), but there are too many characters in a jumbled story to comprehend what's happening and why each monster is present. A few rooms had cool sets, but it was the most physically contained Monsters house in the current series which I didn't expect.

5. Major Sweets Candy Factory (7.5/10, 3 runs): This house grew on my over my trip, and the final night actually had a fully staffed cast, which bumped my rating up half a point thanks to getting unexpected scares. Unlike Goblin's Feast, it blends comedy with a dark subject matter well with effective, if not somewhat unremarkable, scares. It was a little short and probably would've benefited from a better location with another room or two (*cough* SS24 instead of Triplets), but this felt close to being strong on the whole.

4. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (8/10, 4 runs): Holy hell, I did not expect to like this house as much as I did. This was the only house I did every single night of the trip thanks to fairly reasonable waits. It has a fun energy with quite a few good scares, and of course the set design is magnificent. My run on Saturday night was severely understaffed, but aside from that run I caught pretty much every actor. As meh as the new Ghostbusters films are, I would not mind another house if it's as good as this.

3. Slaughter Sinema 2 (8/10, 3 runs): While it's definitely a step down from the first SS, there were some great rooms in here, including Mardi Grad Murders, Killer Kringles, and Hatchet and Chains. The last few rooms (Zyborgs especially) ended it on a fairly weak note, and I probably would've given this a higher rating if the rooms were more consistent.

2. A Quiet Place (8.5/10, 3 runs): Thank god this house actually worked. The soundscape was absolutely perfect with great puppets and a good cast. While the scares were hit or miss due to the puppets being visible in darkness, the house was always fun and eerie to go through.

1. Insidious: The Further (9/10, 2 runs): As someone who wasn't too big on 2015's Insidious or its Horrors of Blumhouse inclusion, this house was SCARY. AS. HELL. On both my runs through this house, I muttered "F*** this" no less than five times each. It had such an anxiety inducing environment with an unpredictable cast. There were often actors you never saw coming (hello first mannequin room). My favorite scare of the event was the one right after you enter the facade because I didn't see that my first time and set a good/bad omen for the fun about to come. It's probably a good thing I only went through this twice due to the long waits because good Lord it was terrifying. The only thing keeping this from GOAT status is that the sets were merely backgrounds to the scares.

The zones were pretty unremarkable with Duality of Fear being an absolute joke, but at least I got a photo with M3GAN. I didn't see Nightmare Fuel as I'm fairly meh on the show's previous iterations and wanted to do other things with my time.

Hey guys, I have some random HHN33 burning questions after my 2 visits lol. Not sure if this is the right place for this post but I wasn't sure where else to put it

1. In the last room of Slaughter Sinema 2, my friend and I saw a movie poster with "coming soon" and the title was Forbidden Obsession. We both saw the same thing. Didnt catch much of the actual image but there was a woman on it. Is this an Easter egg to the past or maybe a clue to the future? My friend and I were so surprised we didn't see anyone else mention this on social media.

2. In Insidious, how do the red faced demons spring out so close to you? My one friend was convinced they were on a bungee, my other friend thought mini stilts because they're tall, I said there was nothing nothing like that just platforms to elevate some of them. So, what's the truth?

3. In Torture Faire, was there ever really a way to play along and get the key that the victims were asking about? I heard some Podcaster say you can play along as a "side quest" but never succeeded.

Lol these are my burning HHN mysteries, please help

Forbidden Obsession is one of the movie trailers shown on the projector screen while you're waiting just outside the house. It was filmed inside of the Dueling Dragons house from the previous year, and re-uses a lot of the fantasy props and costumes that were featured within it.

You can see it at 0:20 in this video.

Final House Rankings:

1. Slaughter Sinema 2 - Throughout the event's run, I was on the fence about deciding whether or not this was better than the original house. After letting my brain digest it, I believe it was better than the original. I adored the original house, but the sequel had so much going for it. The B-Movie line-up was much more diverse. Way better scares too. The clowns were relentless. Walking through Heavy Metal Hell with 3D glasses was trippy as hell lmao. Gonna miss this house a lot...

2. Major Sweets Candy Factory - This was originally #6 on my hype list. After the first few weeks, it was #4. But, going into closing weekend, it became my #2. This house had so much charm. From the soundtrack to the characters to the smells. Just pure, gory fun and the facade always got me pumped. This house redeemed the Fast and Furious location for me, so I'm excited to see what they do next year. This is def a spiritual successor to Leave it to Cleaver. Very old school.

3. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire - Still can't decide if this or the 2019 house was better, but I had a ton of fun with this one. The scale of this house was pretty impressive and had scares that got me every time. The frozen aspect was done very well, but I do wish the house was a little colder. Loved the callbacks to the original films with Vigo, the pink slime, Library Ghost, and a Terror Dog making an appearance. The firehouse scene was a "HOLY SH*T" moment for me lol.

4. Insidious: The Further - The scariest house I've ever done. Scarecrow was a cakewalk compared to this. Designed to just throw you off at every turn. The tension that builds while walking up the giant Red Door will probably not be matched for quite some time. It felt like the house would never end. And thanks to the red curtain hallways, I have PTSD. The actors were giving it their all from opening night to closing night. Super aggressive and were not afraid to get up in your face.

5. The Museum: Deadly Exhibits - Everyone hates this house, but I always had a good time in it. The concept had me intrigued before it was even announced. Super diverse set pieces and scares. Also, really good smells? Weirdly smelled good. The Rotting Stone itself reminds me of Fear's Lantern, so I'm hoping Fear makes a return within the near future. Might just be me coping though. Another house that felt very old school to me. Many didn't like how many security guard scares there are, but there were more than enough non-guard scares in there.

6. Goblin's Feast - Supposed to be a jokey house, but they got me almost every time in this house. This house was just so fun. Aggressive actors and fantastic set pieces. Parts of this house felt like Pier/Blood Moon, which was incredible for a Sprung Tent house. The opening scene literally had me thinking, "oh yeah, this is gonna be great". The house was another simple concept, but it just works. I wouldn't have mind if this one got HOTY.

7. Triplets of Terror - Originally thought this was terrible, but it grew on me A LOT. I dug the concept of this house and thought it was super creative. The facade really set the mood of the house and there was so much stuff to look at to spot easter eggs. The podcast angle was intriguing and a first for HHN. Overall a very gory house and offered some surprisingly good scares. The slaughterhouse scenes were the best part. Felt a little too short though.

8. A Quiet Place - Really didn't think they would be able to pull this off, but they 100% did. The black-out hallway was a genius idea and I HATED that part lol. It was so incredibly weird to see actors using ASL instead of talking. Felt very long and scenically impressive for a Soundstage 22 house. I very much appreciate that Universal took a risk with something like AQP. I love when they push boundaries.

9. Monstruos: The Monsters of Latin America - Wasn't very excited for this to begin with, however it was nowhere near as bad as I thought it was going to be. This house could be SCARY AF depending on your timing. I thought it was a super pretty house, but I think this would've shot up on my rankings if it was like Pier/Blood Moon. Was surprisingly gory too. And the finale scare with Muerte.... holy crap.

10. Universal Monsters: Eternal Bloodlines - Weakest UM house so far. Really hope they let the Monsters rest for a bit and build hype for a Gillman house. I did like the forest scene with the carriage though. That's where the house peaked. Really hated that the Van Helsing crypt shows up multiple times with nothing going on most of the time.

Final Scarezone Rankings:

1. Torture Faire - This was fantastic. Simple, but great concept that delivered on all fronts. I had some fun interactions in this zone.

2. Swamp of the Undead - The Wet Zone. This was probably the most immersive and scariest zone this year. Loved that all of the Swambies were in the different stages of decomposition.

3. Demon Queens - Great lighting, "different" props, and some super aggressive actors. Not at all upset that this one got ZOTY.

4. Enter the Blumhouse - Photo op zone, but man, the actors were on their A-game here. Glad that there weren't any massive props in the middle of the walkways this time around. Another zone in which I had fun interactions.

5. Duality of Fear - Had the chance to be such a great and creative zone, but my God did they blow it. Please Universal, give us a front zone similar to Horrors of Halloween or 30 Years 30 Fears.

Overall:

I loved this year's event. While I did find one house to be a dud, it's nowhere near the worst house I've done. The scarezones, minus Duality, were an upgrade from last year in my opinion. Nightmare Fuel grew on me and I had a great time watching it closing night. The Icons were lackluster, but I did enjoy them to an extent. Needed to be fleshed out more.

I feel bad for the people who were disappointed by this year. Like I can't imagine going to my favorite event and coming out thinking it sucked. Couldn't be me though, I had a fantastic time lmao.

Excited to see what Universal has in store for us next year!

Everybody is probably done reading this thread, but I couldn't help myself. I came here to make just a few comments as I'm sure we are all burned out reading long posts.. so I'll keep it short:

Without question - Insidious was the best house of the event. In fact, this house was the first to really scare the hell out of me in years. I don't know what it was about the overall unease I felt just stepping inside. My heart was just POUNDING. The actors were aggressive and just AMAZING! I think by my third run, I was pretty screaming DAMMIT GET ME OUT OF HERE! NO NO NO! Loved this house! "Now go outside, let my voice be your guide, keep a steady stride, into the Further you go" Gives me chills!

Ghostbusters was fantastic! While I enjoyed the first GB house, this was an improvement. They actually had a few decent scares, and those marshmallow men.. OMG! I want to take them all home!

Most improved house for us was actually Museum. The first night we went, I said, "what the hell was that garbage?" And we skipped it on several return trips. As the event headed into mid-October, we gave it a few more tries, and each time, it actually improved. While still not a fave, I have to give credit.

Slaughter Sinema was also at the top of our list. I damn near cried with laughter when I saw the Mummy Unwrapped part.. I kept thinking, these guys came up with these titles in a bar somewhere.. Loved it!

I've been attending 19 years, and I have to say, Triplets was one of the worst houses I've ever seen. HATED IT with a passion.

The rest were just kind of middle of the road for me. Quiet Place was ok, but kind of disappointing. Sweets was fun. Bloodlines had gorgeous sets, but really didn't do it for me which was a bummer because usually the Monsters houses are my faves. Monstrous felt recycled. Goblins was amusing with great sets.

Not a big fan of the scarezones this year except for Torture Faire. We had a lot of fun in that zone, and it was the only one that really felt like a true HHN zone. The rest were just kind of boring.. Blumhouse was garbage.

We also felt like this was an off year. It felt disjointed and lacking intensity. Also, this is the least amount of merch I've purchased in like 10 years. My favorite purchases were the Lil' Boo sweats and the Ghostbusters sweats. I only bought the house shirt because I have one from every year I've attended. I didn't really like it. I also bought the long-sleeved Insidious shirt which is cool. That's it though.

Hoping for a return to classic HHN next year now that Epic will be open and Vegas will be open.

It's taken me a while to process this year, and separate what was going on in my personal life from what I experienced at HHN.

Major Sweets - It's the GATs for me!!! So many great interactions & interactables here. It's simple, fun, and filled with stuff.

Insidious - It exceeded high expectations. Each cast seemed to have an actor that interpreted the final lipstick-boi's scare differently. Some would totally block my path, others would go for a quick aggressive scare, and still others would do this awesome leaning from behind the wall that was wicked. Nothing particularly groundbreaking here, but it felt like a culmination of the best signature scenes and scares from houses like Poltergeist & Halloween that were redressed very well to the Insidious brand.

Slaughter Sinema 2 - Expected this to be #1 or 2 but the others wound up surprising me so much. Sinema 2 delivered well, but I do think the first half of the house was stronger than the latter scenes in terms of pacing. However, Zyborgs is the scene I would most want to see fleshed out (no pun intended) into a full treatment. Tons of interactive cast members made the first half awesome as well.

A Quiet Place - Exceeded expectations and assuaged my worries that they might use screens (which killed the later Stranger Things houses and Hill House for me in years past). If I was going to the event for scare frequency alone, I might not have liked this. But I don't really look for that in my journeys. The setpieces were beautiful and I loved the sound and lighting elements enough to rate this one high.

Goblin's Feast - Silly, fun house. However, and this is part of the reason I enjoyed this more than Bloodlines, the cast was always aggressive and close in proximity! That made it even better.

Museum: Deadly Exhibits - Disliked until I experienced it with a new perspective. Similar to A Quiet Place, this won me over with sound, lighting, and other sensory elements (smell!). I don't think it was perfect and it had room to grow. But I have more positive takeaways than most folks do.

Monstruos - I feel like it missed some of the best elements of the Hollywood maze. I really enjoyed the Silbon scenes (especially El Silbon-head!). But the bird-gal thirds both felt like they had rooms that were too spacious for the scares they were meant to contain. My big highlight here came from one walkthrough where 2 girls behind me were so scared that they kept falling over, once directly onto a bed prop that was across from the scareactor's boo-hole!

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire - I think it was more enjoyable than 2019's. However, I still don't get much repeatability out of this franchise. One or two walkthroughs really didn't seem to differ much in terms of actor interaction or new things to pick up on.

Triplets of Terror - This was one I was somewhat excited for but it was really hard to get a good walkthrough. I still think my first was the best. Harmony & Melody were awesome. Still not cool with Junior for what he did to dat dawg doe...

Universal Monsters: Bloodlines - So much potential, limited by fairly routine scares, sets, and not a lot of close-proximity actor moments. The zipline shewolf was the highlight. Otherwise, nothing really stood out to me.

Zones were ok. Torture Faire had amazing cast members. Was so much fun meeting and talking with Sinist3r there. Demon Queenz had solid actors, but man did I feel like wardrobe did Surr3al dirty. Sinist3r had her sick Hellraiser skin fit. And Surr3al got a pool noodle wrapped around her dress, plus a foam flame halo? Poor gal did her best with what she had.

Dug pretty much everything I ate. Including the mint corndog of doom. I'm weird like that. Sorry, not sorry.
