Still need to do El Artista tonight but prelim rankings:

1. Terrifier (I am SHOCKED)
2. Wyatt Sicks
3. Jason Universe
4. Dolls
5. Fallout
6. Galkn
7. Hatchet and Chains
8. Five Nights at Freddy’s
9. Grave of Flesh

It’s already off to a strong start, and I wouldn’t give any house lower than a 7. The lagoon show was good, but I was a little surprised there was no IP inclusion. I might do Nightmare Fuel tonight.

Spoiler Warning: I’ll be talking about details from each house below.

I went to Premium Scream Night, here’s my thoughts:

I’ll get to my reviews of the houses below, but I want to start with my review of the night as a whole. I had a really good time overall, but there were a few moments throughout the night where I got a bit frustrated and it did bring the experience down a bit.

While I knew that capacity was higher than last year and expected slightly longer lines, I think inconsistent operations with the pulsing inflated the wait times much further than they should have been. I was able to finish all the houses by 1am, but on a normal night with Express I’m usually finished and out of the park by 11. Granted, I made the mistake of starting with the houses at the front of the park. The app showed the waits for the houses in the back as 5 minutes each for the first couple hours of the event. I’d like to know if people who started there had a better/easier night. I would normally have started there, but given what was promised I had not put any energy into planning or strategizing as I had thought it wouldn’t matter.

It certainly wasn’t a bad experience overall (the storm was rough but that’s nobody’s fault), but knowing how much I had paid for it when Express provides a comparable experience made me feel like I had been ripped off a bit. The pulsing wasn’t worth it for me (with one exception, see my review of Dolls below) and I think if they had operated the houses normally, waits would have been significantly shorter.

Now, onto my review of the houses and zones:

This is an amazing year for me. Even the worst house is still better than average, and the best houses are some of the greatest ever done. One huge plus is that the actors were getting VERY close this year. The cast throughout the park is so aggressive and energetic, they’re incredible. Huge props to everyone involved. The zones are equally high in quality. I skipped last year but from what I’ve heard this is an impressive step up. My rankings may change as I give it more thought but these are my initial impressions.

1. El Artista
• This may be my favorite, FAVORITE house I’ve ever experienced at HHN. Everything about it feels perfect to me and suits my taste exactly. The haunted manor setting is so perfectly executed. I especially loved how at times you could see other parts of the house through a window, it really created a sense that this mansion was a real place you were exploring rather than a walkthrough attraction. The surreal and unsettling artwork also gave this an atmosphere that set it apart from a typical “haunted house” theme. It’s more spooky than it is scary, but personally I care more about atmosphere than jump scares.

2. Gálkn
• This house also had a beautiful setting, and the theme is really unique. I loved the designs of the creatures, and the finale was really cool and unexpected. I wish it had been a bit colder inside to really sell the setting, but that’s not something that impacted my overall enjoyment.

3. Hatchet & Chains
• Really excellent set design with some cool effects. I loved the concept of the train station effect, but I think the execution could have had a little more attention to detail. The projection in this effect has no breaks between train cars - it’s just one endless car. It’s such a small detail but I found it distracting (nobody else in my group noticed or cared lol). Really great use of puppets throughout as well.

4. Dolls
• This was the only house of the night that was properly pulsed, meaning my friend and I were completely alone through our run. We never even caught up to the group in front of us. I have to admit, this made the house WAY scarier than it would have been and was easily the scariest house of the night for me. It was super unnerving to be surrounded by all the dolls, since we were alone it really felt like there were a ton more characters in here than the other houses. I got one really great scare where a doll ran up behind me quickly, which never would have been possible in normal operations. The set design and costumes are really amazing too, they nailed the sense of scale. Only one screen seemed kind of out of place. I also wish the facade was a bit more detailed, it’s a shame that it’s really quite flat. A life-sized dollhouse facade would have been much more impressive.

5. Five Nights at Freddy’s
• I’m really shocked to be ranking this as highly as I am. As someone who isn’t the biggest fan of the IP, I had low expectations going in, but the amount of care and detail put into this house won me over. The very first scene was everything I imagine a FNAF fan would dream of. This is a very puppet/animatronic heavy house, and as such it’s going to be very prone to technical issues. I wish a few more effects had been working as intended, but for the most part everything was running great.

6. Fallout
• As my most anticipated IP ever, I truly loved this house. Don’t let it’s lower ranking fool you, it’s still a great house, probably the best you could hope for from an IP that’s incredibly difficult to condense into one house. I’m really satisfied with what we got, though it honestly could have leaned more into the humor and wacky tone at some moments. I know it’s based on the show so it focused on recreating specific moments, but the games are known for environmental storytelling, and the house could have made better use of that style of vignette. The tease at the end has me so excited for next year, if they plan on bringing it back. A New Vegas house would be an actual dream come true.

7. Jason
• Easily the best house that’s been in the F&F space, and there’s no contest. They really nailed the summer camp aesthetic, though it did get a bit repetitive. I also wasn’t a fan of the long hallway at the end, it felt like it went on forever and was an anticlimactic ending. Still had a good time inside.

8. Terrifier
• Gore usually doesn’t do much for me, so this wasn’t my favorite. I’m a much bigger fan of eerie and unnerving horror than of pure shock value body horror, but I’ll admit that a lot of care was put into this one. The smell in the bathroom scene was nauseating and I had to hold my breath, so I didn’t love that part. I chose the wet path at the end, which didn’t bother me since it was still storming outside and I was already soaked lol. You definitely get pretty wet, warm water pours on you from above, but it’s not enough to soak your shoes. If you go on a normal night you should dry off pretty quickly.

9. WWE
• There’s a huge amount of detail in here and a ton of what are clearly Easter eggs and references for fans, but as someone who doesn’t know a single thing about WWE, I was confused from start to finish. I had fun but I can’t say I really enjoyed it to its fullest. Without knowing the source material it felt really disjointed and incoherent, but was still high quality.

10. Grave of Flesh
• This was the only house I felt a little disappointed in, though don’t get me wrong, I still enjoyed it. The designs of the puppets and costumes were awesome, but it was incredibly repetitive and felt underbaked or rushed. There’s a lot of ideas in here that seem like if they had been developed further, they could have been something incredible and unique. I LOVED the idea that the underworld is this liminal, MC Escher-esque hellscape, rather than the typical pits of fire and such. I just wish they had played with the sense of space more, it doesn’t feel like the concept was explored to its fullest. Aside from a couple of cool scenes, the rest of the house ends up being a bunch of dirt tunnels, which wasn’t too exciting.

Zones:
1. The Cat Lady of Crooked Lane
• I love this scare zone so much. It has a classic Halloween vibe that I think is so necessary for this event. It’s awesome that they tried to create a narrative within a zone, with the children becoming more cat-like as you approach the house. However, I did walk through the zone the wrong way, so I didn’t really experience this effect to its fullest. I also thought that the full cat costumes were really silly, but it works in a campy fun kind of way, and the actors were bringing the perfect energy and sass to make this zone fun.

2. Masquerade: Dance with Death
• This zone was really beautiful. It actually reminded me a lot of Phantom of the Opera with the big chandelier set piece. I think the soundtrack was a bit too upbeat to fit the creepy atmosphere though.

3. Origins of Horror
• Really good for an entrance zone, I actually really liked that there are some big props that block the path a bit. It creates more of a closed in feel in places that this area typically lacks.

4. Toxic Twenties
• I love the aesthetic of this zone, but I think it lacks some villain characters. It’s all victim characters, so it is kind of missing a scare factor.

Others:
Mel’s Die-In
• This is a great addition, it really brings some life (or death?) to this corner. The makeup wasn’t the style I was expecting but it’s definitely fun.

Club Horror
• …What? This is the biggest weak point this year. Who is this for? It’s a lose-lose scenario. Either A) nobody likes it enough to spend any time there and you end up with an awkward DJ set that has no crowd (this was the case on Premium night), or B) it’s actually popular and people hang out here, creating a huge road block in an area that’s notoriously problematic for being a huge bottleneck. I have a feeling this area is going to be a massive issue on crowded nights.

Holy Moly what a damn year….

RANKINGS
El Artista
Dolls
Galkn
Five Nights At Freddy’s
Terrifier
Jason Universe
Wyatt
Grave of Flesh
Fallout
Hatchet and Chains

Come back of the century. The best year I’ve gone through between now and 2017. A&D eat your cake, you deserve it.

El Artista is the best house I’ve ever seen and now sits on the throne on top of my favorite houses.
Galkn is super fun with scares, sets, and that ONE scene.
Dolls runs for me were very intense and reminds me of what I feel old school Originals were like. Also very quotable.
All the IPS this year are great to fantastic, not one of them is bad.

Will be back many many times this year and hungry for more.

P.s. got to see Ramón in front of us during our Wyatt run. Made the night very special.

Thanks for the rundown and reviews. So my wife really wants to check out the fallout house, she is gets spooked pretty well with most haunted houses, but was hoping it’s like a 3/10or 4/10 on scare factor.
On a scale of 1-10 on fear/scare factor would you give the fallout house?

Not my original post but it’s one of the less spooky this year, definitely more on the “you’re just walking through a show” houses they’ve done.

I’ll add if your wife is ok with wearing earplugs it really cuts the jump scare factor by like 30-40% on most of the houses.

It’s hard for me to give it a ranking since I’m not easily scared, but to me it’s certainly less scary than the other houses. The people jumping out at you are mostly just regular humans, main characters from the show, or some people wearing power armor. It was more cool than it was scary, in my opinion.

The AAP tables this year are helpful like last year but the new set up is a pain. The table by MIB is still there and works well. However, the table has changed at the front of the park and is now at the back hub area. This is a pain. They should’ve kept it where it was last year (by minion blast). It’s a pain having to walk back there to get a time. And once you are back there you at the house so might as well just go to the house attendant. They need to fix this.

Huge, huge improvement over last year. Especially considering it's opening weekend and the scareactors usually aren't quite locked into their rhythms until week 3 or so in my experience. Almost every house felt like it was already on that week 3 level so I'm excited to see how high they can reach from here.

The overall atmosphere throughout the park is also improved so much. You can tell they made a concerted effort to spread life around the streets, with an essentially unbroken chain of cool stuff from Hollywood's excellent Masquerade zone all the way through the Mel's zombies, the delightful return of Ghoulish, the instant all-timer Cat lady zone (which almost feels like an outdoor house), and the return of the Springfield chainsaws. Last year the park felt dead, this year it feels more alive than I've ever seen it.

House rankings:
Loved:

1. El Artista - a true work of art, takes the nonlinear setting thing to a whole new level (literally). Vibes are unbelievable. I can't wait to go back through and soak in all the details.

2. Terrifier - Art is kind of the perfect haunted house villain, he's all physicality and gags. Everything that felt shallow or gratuitous to me in the movies works perfectly in this format. Felt super long too, tons of stuff hanging in your face, exciting use of color and sound especially in the Christmas portion. Wet path was reasonably wet, maybe 2% of a Bilge Rat Barges.

3. Galkn - this really shows the potential of those new tents, expansive place making and a final scene that featured my best scare of the night right after I was gawking at the giant puppet.

4. Dolls - perfectly nasty little house that executes its gimmick to a tee. Toy Story Mania queue for sickos.

Really liked:

5. Hatchet and Chains - I've been watching a lot of Westerns this year and this captures the vibes well. Story is a little muddled but I like the spectral steeds and the train projection.

6. Jason Universe - last house of the night for me. The most successful house I've seen in that location. It does what it says on the tin, there's a shitload of Jason's.

7. Grave of Flesh - I appreciated the creativity and abstraction of this one, it felt like it was aiming for something almost metaphysical by the end despite how intriguingly corporeal the mole ghouls are.

Liked:

8. Fallout - sad to say since I love the show, it did not make the jump to this format very well. The opening scene in the vault works great but it flounders in the wasteland. I was glad the gulper made it in but disappointed not to have Michael Emerson's severed head waved at me, my two pre-registered metrics for satisfaction.

9. WWE - felt like a mediocre original to me, some fun scares with the giant bunny man especially but I never had a single notion of what was going on no matter how many screens they slathered in there.

Did not like:

10. FNAF - bleh

EDIT: On night two I burned my S&S advantage to get through FNAF and it's down at #10 for me, only house I did not like at all and will not do again. The animatronics and enormous puppets are undeniably impressive but they belong at a photo op, not a haunted house where their slow, limited motion and long, long reset times cut against the core appeal of the haunt format. If you have no attachment to the IP (as I don't) there's nothing for you in this one. Very happy to let it soak up crowds for the rest of the season while I never do it again.

The eight houses I saw so far in rough, very changeable order:
  • Artista -- simply a work of art. A classic ghost house perfectly executed. Only downside is the long, convoluted, slow moving queue.
  • Galkn - lot of fun with this one, wide variety of monsters and effects. Most effective use of animation yet, they cracked that. A recurring theme tonight, but very aggressive cast. It feels like restrictions were lifted.
  • Terrifier -- bad movies, great clown-driven funhouse. Still more risqué than I expected. Nice length, ton of scares, another aggressive house. Also saw the walk-around Art, very well done.
  • Dolls -- so much fun, Syd's version of the Toy Story Mania queue. Sleeper candidate that I could easily see taking HotY. Happy to eat crow on this one.
  • Jason -- another one I owe an apology. Nothing new or innovative here, but a small army of large Jasons, all going hard for a scare. This is your counter to any "HHN isn't scary" debates.
  • Fallout -- the opening vault scenes are a perfect haunt, with an aggressive cast. Credit to casting, Lucy is played by such a unique address--she's basically a living Disney princess--I thought she'd be hard to replicate, but they found doppelgangers. The rest of the house plays out more like something from FanFest than a haunt, with some dull spots but still should be satisfying fan service.
  • Hatchet & Chains -- sets are great, monsters didn't fit the theme tho. Also a lot of empty boo holes. Fingers crossed it improves but a bit of a disappointment.
  • Grave of Flesh -- ok opening, but rest feels repetitive, until the end, which is just "huh?" Actors were good, just let down by the sets.

Follow-up, Wyatt Sicks somewhere in the #3/4 position, with Terrifier probably creeping up to #2. Top 6 very subject to change because these are exceptional houses, and I can only expect them to get better. All would typically be easy top 3 most years. I'd even say any of the 6 would've been my HotY in 2024.

Five Nights at Freddy's has jaw-dropping sets. Fully re-creates a Chuck E Cheese experience. The scares aren't really there, tho, and "haunted restaurant" can't support that many rooms, there's a lot of filler.

All of the zones are great. Mel's Die-In fun. Just an awesome year.

Some additional odds and ends after Sunday night:

- Nightmare Fuel is good as always, less magic than ever but more sapphic aerialism and a jacked contortionist. They're giving the people what they want.

- The one weak point this year is the food. I had the Fallout spam and tots which was tasty but obscenely overpriced even with the 20% AP discount. Likewise the Jason spiral sausage, it's a good quick protein hit but shouldn't be that expensive. Nothing else was really calling my name, I actually went out to Citywalk and grabbed an Auntie Anne's pretzel at one point rather than wait for any snacks within the park.

- On the themed cocktail side, Nuka-Cola Dark was... interesting, I appreciate the audacity of springing detectable Fernet-Branca notes on the unsuspecting theme park public. Zazzler in Sting Alley was good if you like a really boozy drink. $11.50 Jai Alai refills at Club Horror are the best beer deal at the event and the best part of that whole "experience".

- Tribute store looks great but has poor crowd flow and the merch wasn't really doing it for me, I didn't even scope out anything I'll want to buy during the 80% off clearance closeout. I'm picky with that stuff though, last year the only thing I bought was the Mel's shirt.

- Dead Coconut Club was bumping, people were actually on the dance floor and the DJ was spinning some great transitions. Very fun theme this year with a lot of clever details, though it doesn't top the B-movie one at 32 for me.

- Overall the wristband system is a big improvement over the old zone queuing, but the way they're pre-loading the houses does make it harder than ever to tour effectively sans express. With the old system, each house was a "soft target" as it opened for the first time, which meant it was often possible to walk on to almost all the soundstage houses in quick succession if you timed things right, because it took a while for substantial waits to accrue outside of the early opening headliners. You could also usually make it back to the tent houses with negligible waits because they didn't have any S&S guests in them. But with them stacking people in every queue before the houses open, those soft targets are gone. I only managed to get through four runs each night before the waits hit a wall around 7:30 (earlier than ever for the wall too), when I used to be able to manage five or six. Not sure how much of it is the logistical change and how much is that it was just really freakin' crowded this weekend though.

Opening weekend review. Went all 3 nights at a very relaxed pace so we didn't get everything done, got through everything and missed Grave which we will do on Wednesday. Rating will probably change as most of the houses fall into 3 lumps as usual. The good news is those 3 lumps are Good, Great and Excellent this year as there are no complete stinkers.

9. Fallout - enjoyed the sets as I liked the show but that's about where it ends unfortunately. House feels very flat but at least there are things to look at of interest.

8. Wyatts Sicks - biggest issue for me here is I have absolutely zero connection to the source material. With that it falls to the the low end for me.

7. Dolls - I think the issue for me with this not being higher is it's almost too good at portraying the theme/idea. The Fisher Price/Barbies dream house plastic toy vibe is perfectly done but because of this the sets read very flat(which being a plastic toy makes sense) to me. But got a few good scares and can see it being more fun as the event goes on.

6. FNAF- Animatronics and Puppets are incredible. This was our first house of the event and walking out concluding that the theme of this years event is money, money, money because they spent a ton of it. Would be higher but again a lack of connection to the source material and unfortunately no scares her for me as you can see the puppets from a mile away. Also victims never do it for me in a house, I want to be fearing for my life not yours.

5. Galkin - beautiful house with some great sets and scenes. Last bit with the giant puppet makes for a fun time.

4. Jason - intense and fun. Best house that's been in this space. Wish the Jason gauntlet section had more theme as it's mostly just plywood walls with curtained boo holes which makes for a intense albeit not very visually stimulating section. Would have been high for me with more theming here.

3. Hatchet - went into this with very little expectations and was blown away. Awesome sets, cool character design, train projections and hell fire floor are really cool as are the whizzing bullet holes.

2. Terrifier - shocked this is a high as it is as the films are a tough watch. But Art is the perfect character for a gory house and is so silly and stupid in a creepy way that it just clicks. I giggled the whole way through and just had a really good time. The wet path is def a bit of a gimmick but felt great to cool down a bit.

1. El Artista - This is an all timer for me in the 13 years I've been going. Not sure where it will land in my ranks overall my 13 years of houses but def top 3. It's the type of house that is the exact reason why you go to HHN. My jaw was on the floor the whole way through at the scale of it.

As far as the scare zones, they always tend to just be a means to get where I'm going most years and that's really no different this year for me at least. However that's NOT the case with The Cat Lady of Crooked Lane which is basically an outdoor house for me. I've never spent this much time in a scare zone and the mini shows are a ton of fun.

Nightmare Fuel was fun as always but hoping they retire this format next year because even as someone who loves the show I think it's run it's course.

All in all a great year and the lower houses in any other year would have probably ended up in the middle of the pack. Can wait for the fun to be had for the next 2 months.

Jason, Dolls and maybe Wyatt were my most enjoyed houses after 2 nights but honestly everything is great. FNAF would be at my bottom only because I’m not that into animatronics for scares nor the IP itself.

Every zone is packed with life again. SF club thing….exists.

Food is mostly good to forgettable.

Fountain show is fantastic, NF is neat but I’m kinda over sexy fire dance party.

Can’t wait to see how things change up in 3 weeks.

That being said, Art the Clown walking around the park was a brilliant idea that needs to be repeated every year (not necessarily with Art). Can do Jack or all the Icons even next year roaming the park. The fact that nowhere seems to be off limits brings back a level of chaotic randomness that has been missing for a while.

Opening weekend (Friday and Saturday) review. Overall this year definitely kicks last year in the @$$! The atmosphere is very cohesive and loved how they brought back roaming characters and the chainsaw drill team back in The Simpsons area. Didn’t really get the food because opening weekend I try to focus more on the houses and scare zones, drinks are ok. I wish they would have more beer selections, but happy that most if not all drink have no bitters.

House Rankings:

10). Jason Universe - liked how cramp and claustrophobic it was, but to me it just didn’t hit. I think it’s an overstretch to say this house is just as scary or 10x times more scarier than Insidious from last year. Scares didn’t hit with me, felt very tame and I just thought meh overall.

9). Fallout - nice set designs and cool how the characters looked like from the show, but this is not my cup of tea. I haven’t seen the show, but I would’ve wished they do more from the game franchise rather than the show.

8). Five Nights at Freddy’s - it’s very much walking through the movie. The animatronics/ puppets looked really good. But, overall not scary at all.

7). Galkn - this house can change with my ranking, didn’t really think this house was great, but didn’t think it was bad either. Design was really cool and a few good scares.

6). Dolls: Lets Play Dead - same thing, didn’t hate it but didn’t love it. Has potential to grow. Love it more than Galkn. I will say this house to me is deeply disturbing, like if Sid from Toy Story had a little girl and showed her his toys.

5). Grave of Flesh - opening night didn’t get any scares, but I like how it really feels like we are traveling through underground tunnels. But then on Saturday, got all the scares. This house sits in the middle for me cuz it can go either way. The ending is a bit confusing, the old relics and old underground city didn’t scream underworld to me. It felt more like a buried ancient city, but pretty good house.

4). The Horrors of The Wyatt Sicks - I don’t know anything about this wrestling group nor about wrestling in general, but this house was really good. Good scares and thought all the characters were creepy af.

3). Hatchet and Chains - this house originally was at the bottom for me but had really good run throughs on both Friday and Saturday. Reminded a lot of The In-Between house from 2011 as in the demons are covered in glow paint that reacts to black light and you can’t tell where they’re coming from.

2). El Artista: A Spanish Haunting - wow, this house is both scary and very beautiful. Best way to describe it is if you combined Disney’s Haunted Mansion ride, Haunting of Hill House, HHN’s Gothic, and a classic haunted house attraction all in one. After this house I still believe that Sergio is the official HHN icon for this year, but everyone can have their own opinion.

1). Terrifier - OH MY GOD!!! This house was hands down my most anticipated and it did not disappoint! The house is truly disgusting and grotesque, just like how they used to do gory houses back in the day. Art himself isn’t scary and is more of a funny little guy, but he does have some good jump scares. The wet path is the way to go, but wear proper non slip shoes!!!

Scare Zones/ Street Experiences:

6). Mel’s Die In - it was cool, but nothing worth sticking around to watch. Some cast changes I saw had no skaters and others did. Idk? My only fear is that this area will can get too crowded and the roller skaters can’t do their skating.

5). Origins of Horror - not really surprised, it’s a page of contents for the event itself, a selfie zone with the statues showcasing the IP’s. I wish there would be more scare actors here, cuz near the end where the statues are, there’s no scare actors. But overall I’m very happy that the zone extends all the way into Minions Land again and the sets are really beautiful.

4). Mutations: Toxic Twenties - it’s pretty good. The characters were really cool and I loved the designs of the makeup and they were really going after people!

3). Masquerade - really cool, I’m a sucker for vampires and this zone was really cool to me. I was worried that it would be a Vampi zone but this is far from it. Loved the victims and I love that you can see different versions of vampires.

2). Club Horror - I know lots of people are not happy about this being at HHN, but I liked it. It felt more like a chill zone to relax a bit, have a drink or a snack and just have fun. I did experience security telling people not to block the walking paths, but let’s see how long that lasts.

1). The CatLady of Crooked Lane - personally I hate cats!!!! This scare zone makes me feel very uncomfortable and I hate it, but all in a good way. The mini shows of the CatLady are funny and creepy, the cat creatures are terrifying, and overall the vibe is very much Halloween. Happy they brought back the pumpkins in the trees again. Very much gives the werecats from Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island, which makes it even more terrifying.

The house line up this year is definetly one for the books and I've been coming since 2004! The only one that would be considered a "dud" for me is grave of flesh. Is it reanimated corpse? Is it aliens? Is it oversized bugs? It wasn't a "wowzer".

El Artista should be a masterclass of what a HHN house should be! Great Facade that calls back to the peak years of facades like dead end and dead waters.

They should have named Jason's Un1v3rse "return to Camp Crystal Lake" because It never left there. Don't know why but I was expecting scenes from Manhattan and space even Vs Freddy.

Wyatt Sicks really shocked me. I wasn't expecting as good of a house as it was!

The overall atmosphere of the park is good but I hate they have the parade. The parade prevents them from having the huge permanent props in the scare zones that filled it out and made it look "busy".

What a fantastic year, after 2-3 years of (in my opinion) sore years that made me question my interest in the event... HHN is back. I'm not going to provide a full review yet since a few aspects of the event can improve over time (like SAs getting comfortable, etc.)

Operations
  • I tend to press on UOR a lot when it comes to this topic, and while there are some pain points (mentioned below) this has been a pretty smooth opening weekend.
  • AAP - The lack of advanced communication and execution of this system is a complete failure this year. For starters, I thought last year having a location by Villain-Con was brilliant as it reduced congestion at the house entrances and made it easier for AAP guests to get their next return time. This year however, they moved the Villain-Con location right in front of WWE/FNAF which requires guests to get over there to get a return time. It's a long walk to and from and not providing seating back there with no food (just a drink stand) is a really bad oversight on their part. I also think its unfair for UOR to make guests wait until a house opens to then receive a return time. Not saying AAPs should automatically access the express at the start of S&S, but maybe "discount" their first wait? The lack of any communication beforehand on this policy change is horrendous on their part and I feel awful for any fans who need this system. I'm sure it's a procedure that can be easily adjusted.
  • Stay & Scream new procedure - what a vast improvement over a process that was outdated for its modern-day popularity.
  • F&B operations have vastly improved.

Houses
A bit early to review houses as they can improve, but for right now a quick summary (not in order):
  • WWE - surprised by how good it is. I'm not a WWE fan, but this house was great.
  • FNAF - unsure yet
  • El Artista - beautifully themed and great scares
  • Grave of Flesh - not exactly sure what is happening, but it's great
  • Terrifier - love this house.
  • Jason Universe - wasn't sure how they would pull it off in this space... but they did. Fantastic
  • Galkn - unsure yet
  • Fallout - not a fan of the show or house, so this ultimately ended up being the weakest part of the event
  • Hatchet and Chains - love this house
  • Dolls - I was worried this house would not work like Bugs: Eaten Alive, but it did for me.

Scare Zones
  • Overall this year is a fantastic year for scare zones. After a few years of horrendous execution, the zones feel like they're meant to be part of the event. Origins of Horror is easily one of their best front gate zones in a very long time. Will provide more detailed reviews as the event moves along.
Entertainment
  • Nightmare Fuel - fantastic show this year. Yes it's more of the same, but I enjoyed this year far more than last year. Contortionist from AoV a few years ago was the highlight back then, and again now.
  • Haunt-O-Phonic - I liked Ghoulish before it was shut, so good to see it return.
  • I'm going to include Club Horror under here... I think it's fine but congestion still occurs here thanks to the placement of stages. Just move it closer to the curb, no one will complain and the atmosphere will remain the same. I do hope this concept returns with more theming though tied to the year's overall event.
Food & Beverage
  • Death by Cheese Stick (surprisingly great)
  • Elotes (fantastic)
  • Crystal Lake Coffee (awesome)
  • Camp Bloody S'mores (disgusting)
  • Birria Ramen (surprisingly great)
  • Birria Beef Walking Taco (awesome)
  • Twisted Tater Chips - Ranch and Vinegar (inedible, too salty)

Tribute Store - This year's store is well themed for its space... but it doesn't work. I think comparing this year's store to previous iterations is unfair.

Didn't do Fallout opening weekend but I will check it out probably this weekend with very low expectations.

9. WWE: This one just did not work for me, even approaching it as an original. 0 Scares for me, but the sets were really really good even if it felt like a longer Triplets of Terror.

8. Five Nights: As an experience the house is downright impressive. The opening room is genuinely mindblowing in execution and the effects, puppets and animatronics were some of the best I have seen from the event. That being said, the house gave me zero sense of scares or even creepiness so I really don't see myself liking it anymore than the first walkthrough.

7. Graves of Flesh: This one really disappointed me in the sense that I expected something that felt a bit more oppressive than what we got. The set up and first half are really awesome, but once the 2nd half goes into a weird, almost science fiction looking setting, it lost me. I do think this house has almost the most greatest potential to rise as the boo holes and scare setups are ripe for some insane scares, it's just up to the cast to really step up the aggression.

6. Dolls: First house of the event for me and it left a great first impression on me with an incredible sense of unease and uncomfortableness. The sets were awesome, gross and the doll designs were creatively disturbing. Maybe a bit more aggression from the actors would make it even better.

5. Jason Universe: Mixed on this one (in a good way?), but I will start off by saying the first half of the house is extremely impressive considering the space they had to work with. I was worried the house would feel short because the full tent from last year was lost, but starting in the actual queue of Supercharged threw me off enough where the scares really got me. The Jason hallway in the 2nd half is the most devious thing Creative has done in a long time outside of the Red-Faced Demons lair in Insidious last year, what an intense sequence of scares. My only criticism is that I wish Creative utilized all of the outdoor space for a massive tent like they did for Major Sweets AND the full queue space for the house to make a lengthy experience. Easily the best house they have done in this space, and they can make it even better in the future.

4. Galkn: Unsurprisingly, this house rocked visually and surprisingly in scares. The atmosphere was intense, the creature designs blended into the environment to make for really great scares, and the finale was jaw dropping. I wish we had a few more larger creatures to play with, but this is definitely a great use of the new tent space that made me forget that we weren't in a Soundstage or Parade building.

3. Hatchet and Chains: I think people are really sleeping on this one. I was not expecting how hard the scare actors would go, how serious the tone of the house would be (based off the mostly comedic Slaughter Sinema 2 feel), and how mindblowing the sets were for these old tents. I am in awe of how this house had such great scale vertically AND length-wise, while delivering a winding and claustrophobic haunt. This was such a phenomenal mix of scares and dead-serious tone, delivering a western-horror experience that I felt lacked back with Ghost Town.

2. El Artista: If it was not for Dead Man's Pier, one of my favorite houses ever, this would be easily the most gorgeous HHN house of all time. The sets, facade, mood, music, effects... all just crafted to perfection. It makes sense as to why HHN marketed this house as THE centerpiece of the event. It is haunting and somber, yet has some incredible scares (the flying gargoyle to divert the attention from the ground level scares is spectacular), like a scary, more twisted Haunted Mansion. It reminds me of Nevermore from HHN 21 long ago in how the sets and monsters devolve into misshapen monstrosities. What a freaking masterpiece of a house and one I cannot wait to experience over and over again.

1. Terrifier: I do not know how they did it, I don't even know how to explain why this house hits so hard in a logical way, but it does with pitch perfect execution. I don't hate the Terrifier films, but they didn't click with me. I appreciated their efforts in makeups/effects and pushing the boundaries of what slasher horror could do, but I always felt the films were gross and mean-spirited in a way that other gore-fests like Evil Dead work way better. This house shows how something of the exact same tone and energy can translate perfectly into an HHN house. The sets are NASTY, disturbing, smelly, and varied. The scare setups were really effective at getting me to jump. The scare actors, especially the endless amount of Arts, all convincingly sold me on why he is an icon with top tier physical acting, aggressive in your face scares, lingering grimaces after the scares, and charismatic goofiness. This house being a top 5 IP HHN experience in the nearly 2 decades I have been going for was shocking and it really shows that with the right team, the right creatives, a great amount of room for flexibility in IP portrayal, and a perfect cast, you can build a top tier house. Not to mention despite the insane gore and gross-out scares, this house is FUN. Immense respect to Universal to really crafting an unsullied Terrifier experience that can be appreciated by more than just fans of the franchise.

Scarezones/Experiences (much briefer thoughts as my house rankings are extremely long)

I don't care for Nightmare Fuel so I don't usually watch it.

7. Club Horror: At least it doesn't take me forever to walk through San Francisco for once? Not much else to say.

6. Mel's Die-In: Great use of space, helps fill in park atmosphere even in the empty spots

5. Origins of Horror: Thank God for the return of a solid entrance scarezone even if it's really just a tone-setter.

4. Masquerade: Great use of space compared to Demon Queens. Feels more filled and alive, even if I am a little tired of vampire scarezones at this point.

3. Ghoulish: Awesome show that was nice to cool down with after being in line throughout the nights. Wish it could be a bit more tied to the general tone of the event and theme, but the visuals were great and the music was as well.

2. Toxic Twenties: One of the better scarezones to come from this area. The sets are fantastic, the actors were on point, and the effects were surprisingly dynamic this time around.

1. Catlady of Crooked Lane: I mean c'mon, from the beginning this was a shoe-in for best scarezone of the year, and one of the best since coming back from Covid. The atmosphere with the initial street, the pumpkins, the great costumes, and the inspired mini walkthrough at the end leading to the Cat Lady and the house itself. Just a great experience overall.

Critiques: My major criticism for this year, part of which was inevitable since HHN has been trending up in attendance year after year and the lineup being stacked, is the operations. I get that Rip Ride Rockit is getting obliterated before our eyes, but the queue layouts for the 4 Soundstages houses in the "hub" are downright miserable to get to, leave, find and wait in. Maybe it's because I am so used to the tried and true queues we have had in the past, but the switchbacks feel endless, likely because walking to these houses through crammed walkways feels endless. Sure, using soundstages to build queues gives you a chance to cool off, I just feel like waiting in them just kills my energy due to the emptiness in atmosphere they give off and not really getting an idea of exactly how far we are from the entrance of the house itself. My other significant gripe is the food stands. Now these have been getting worse year to year (not just quality-wise even if there are some good options this year) and this is the year they finally broke me. Why does it feel that EVERY stand feels understaffed, I know this is not on the staff, but the management themselves. I should not have to wait 30 minutes for a stupid long cheese-stick or 25 minutes for an already prepared Rad-Away pouch. Somehow I find myself questioning whether I would rather wait half an hour for just a decent snack or an hour for the worst queue in the park while starving. Then there is the insane downgrade the Tribute Store got. The theming there is still great, but the lack of space makes it 1-time visit for me, which hasn't been the case in any year of the event that has had one.

Overall Thoughts: This year is just fantastic. I would say it's my favorite of the 2020s so far, but I want to hold off until later in the event to truly declare that, especially because I adored 31 and 32. The house lineup was dynamic having some excellent scares in most of them, the scarezones feel back to form, the lagoon show is great fun, the whole park finally feels like it has something in every corner atmosphere-wise, and the budget feels like it was not spared for really anything except for the Tribute Store.
