And adding onto the EDB convo, right now over in Hollywood they're currently building a facade which has a gazebo which is pretty much from the film. I truly don't think EDB has been dropped.

Granted, I dont know much about media rights and licensing IP among entertainment companies, but to play devil’s advocate, couldn’t the benefit to Universal being avoiding paying the licensing fee for a property that’s not evidently moving the needle?

Sure, the house is built, but can’t imagine too much money went into designing anything “Evil Dead”-specific (the movies are all relatively generic in their iconography). Plus so much has been made here about how much HHN recycles props/layouts during construction anyway.

My assumption is that the biggest loss would be presumably eating the cost of merchandise, but if it’s not gonna sell anyway who cares? Shelf space is valuable, maybe there’s an equation that says bumping that merch for more Sinners/Stranger Things is worth the hassle of the last-minute pivot?

Again, this is all out of my element so I’m genuinely curious. I get that, even setting aside dollars and cents there’s probably a risk of straining the relationship with the studio, but given how that’s gone in the past (Conjuring, Evil Dead Rise, etc.) was it that great in the first place?

I’m also pretty sure that, this late, Universal would still be obligated to pay the licensing fee as they’d be terminating the contract without cause.

Which facade? I'm assuming it's either the JW Queue or the Mummy Queue but most of the time I can never tell what they are until they're 90% finished. Though it is fun seeing them be built throughout the construction season.

The incentives just aren't there. It's a lose-lose-lose for Universal.

Universal wouldn't have agreed to feature the IP in the first place if they didn't think it would be a draw of some kind (or it services a relationship with a company they want to do business with in the future. Take Evil Dead now, get something like It down the line.)

Your assumption that they didn't put too much money into designing anything Evil Dead-specific is a false one. Everything IP-related has to get final approval from the party/parties that control the IP, and Universal's whole pitch is to realize the film worlds in a physical space. In other words, they absolutely put the usual amount of resources and effort into building/sourcing sets, props, costumes, makeups, and masks that closely resembled what's on screen. Recycling is more permissible/feasible for original houses, though obviously props are props are props, so some things can get repurposed in IP settings.

The merchandise would be another issue, but probably not the biggest one. With that said, reprinting house shirts to exclude Evil Dead Burn this late in the game would be a considerable expense and hassle.

The actual problem would be replacing the house itself. The Horror Nights design and production workflow is not built in a way to facilitate last-minute pivots, period. These houses call for something like 15+ months of planning from conception to execution (not sure what the actual number is these days, but for a while, it was around here). Yes, they've already built sets, which now need to be modified enough to conceal what they originally were to the satisfaction of WB. It's hard to say how much of a lift that is without having seen the movie or what they've constructed, but the event starts in just over a month.

This means they would have to rally creative teams of all stripes to quickly brainstorm a new concept that can work with what's there for the least amount of money, because they didn't budget for this. These teams are also swamped with actually finishing the rest of the event, and some vendors may have already committed to other projects. Still, they somehow either need to build (or more likely, again, recycle) costume, mask, and makeup assets that ideally align with the casts they've already assembled. Then they've gotta clear the new house name and description and commission new art assets...

...all of this for a haunted house that they know is more likely than not to be a dud and rejected by guests. Hellblock Horror was not good, and word got around fast.

Ok, ok you guys have convinced me. Art is on the outs most likely. I’m thankful to not have to experience Hellblock horror 2 or another Us.

Neither, it's over in the H-Lot. (Where Poltergeist was last year.)

Regarding Evil Dead Burn, it’s also worth remembering that Horror Unleashed currently has an Exorcist: Believer house two years after that movie bombed so badly they cancelled a trilogy and are rebooting with a new director.

If that contract ink is dry and props made, there’s already enough sunk costs to just see it through.

Thats a very good point. I’m one of the ones who actually liked the movie but I know it grossly underperformed. 600 mil I believe Blumhouse paid for the property. I’m hoping Mike Flanagan makes the movie everyone is expecting.

My guess? Something got shifted earlier in the season for whatever reason.

That caused EDB to get moved after the movie release, and the ad buy that includes Ozzy was already paid for and locked in.

Just to help put a period on the IP houses dropping talk, all you have to do is look at the last 15 years of history and see what is usually the cause: extraordinary circumstances.

I feel like there’s surely an announcement coming this week, likely dual coast, so what’s everyone’s guess if so? I’m betting on Ozzy between “Ozzy Day” this week along with the reveal already being leaked. Although it sure would be nice to get Evil Dead out there to put that debate to bed lol

I genuinely hope not, pulling Evil Dead Burn will result in something slapped together and the movie actually has a lot of great house potential.

To be clear, if HHN pulled the house at the last minute because the movie underperformed (and not because, say, it was NC-17 instead of the R that had been promised, or reworked into a parody or something), Universal would still pay every cent of licensing fees. If the studio's lawyer is good, maybe a little extra, to make up for the lost marketing they anticipated from the event. This would be in addition to construction costs and lost merch sales. The only way out of paying would be if the studio materially breached its contract.

If EDB isn't coming--and I don't know that it isn't--there's a juicy story waiting to be told. Corporations don't throw away money like that on a whim.

Just throwing my 2 cents in - I can't imagine them dropping a house because a movie didn't do great at the box office. Like so many others have said, Universal already paid to build the house, and for the licensing fee. It's safe to assume that merch for Evil Dead will still sell, and dropping EDB from the lineup wouldn't result in anyone canceling their trip.

There just really wouldn't be a point lol

Especially when MOST sequels at this summer's box office have been bombs (Mortal Kombat II, Star Wars Mandalorian, Minions, Jackass, Super Girl, Moana, etc). The lack of boxoffice doesn't seem to be related the movie itself, but rather a big trend this summer.

Will they post today that FFP will go on sale tomorrow like they did last year? I’m thinking they won’t as if there is no express option with them there is no need to give us a heads up now.
