Phenomenal lead performance from Willa Fitzgerald, too. She will join Toni Collette in HEREDITARY, Lupita Nyong'o in US, and Mia Goth in PEARL in the category of "incredible performance that will be totally overlooked for awards because it happens to be a performance in the genre."

*It's more thriller than overt horror, but it's a close call.

Really can't emphasize enough that you should go into this one blind. I was primed for a twist or two, and it still caught me off guard. Great flick.

It's literally sublime. Just from completely out of nowhere, too. What a tremendous tour de absolute FORCE performance, what a wild ride, what a great looking, great sounding, great feeling, great dark film. It's just one of those movies that comes along and reminds you why you love these things.

Call it recency bias, call it short thinking but I legitimately think 2024 has a serious case for best year in genre history ever.

The new SALEM’S LOT on Max is fine. It’s probably a case where the less familiar you are with Stephen King’s novel, the more you’ll enjoy it, because it really is a speedrun through that story, and it fairly ruthlessly cuts away most of the texture and depth of the characters and the town.

That said, it looks great, and most of the vampire sequences are enjoyably spooky.

Call it recency bias, call it short thinking but I legitimately think 2024 has a serious case for best year in genre history ever.

Watched it too. Sarah Paulson is incredible...I appreciated the overarching commentary it draws upon with grief and isolation. Everything else was...Ok.

Agreed. Felt like it ran out of plot/story to deliver the commentary it wanted to.

Let's not get carried away!

It's not hyperbole and I'll stand by it. Not only are there some legitimate all timers in 2024, the fact that there's such a wide swath across the genre has been such a treat. There's literally been something for everyone!

Speaking of a nice spread, V/H/S Beyond is one of the better installments in the franchise. The series is always a mixed bag as anthology films usually tend to be but the unifying theme of science fiction is used to some great effect here while also not feeling like a restriction at all. Beyond brings some of the most intense set pieces, craziest gore and arguably the most singularly beautiful segment (written by Mike Flanagan and directed by oft collaborator Kate Seigel) in the entire franchise. It's just really great to see fresher voices in the genre getting to flash their skills and V/H/S does a great job at that.

V/H/S continues its run as a great October tradition!

I think 2024's been a very good year for the genre, no question.

But I'm nowhere near ready to put it in the same category as 1931, 1968, 1973, 1981, 1999, etc.

Watched “The Cursed” tonight and there’s a lot to like about it. The plot is … maybe over baked? But it’s an enjoyable two hours, even if quite imperfect.

Just saw It's What's Inside last night. It's like a hard sci-fi twist on Bodies Bodies Bodies. It's got plenty of killer twists and turns throughout. The cinematography, score, lighting, and design of the mansion is superb. As for performances, in my opinion David Thompson was the stand-out as Forbes, the estranged friend. He perfectly embodies the trickster archetype. Overall, not one of the best of 2024, but still pretty darned memorable regardless. It's What's Inside is now streaming on Netflix. You should check it out.

I can’t believe Strange Darling is only a 90-minute movie given how long it dragged on. This did not do it for me or any of the group I watched it with. Ah well, there’s always the next one.

Edit: Delayed, but this speaks pretty well to why this didn’t work for me.

I never read it but I loved it. it was a slow burn movie but it was awesome.
I like it much more than the original. I kinda hated that one

Finally got to see In a Violent Nature, and I enjoyed it quite a bit! Definitely a more ambient and relaxed kind of pace for a slasher, but I dug it quite a bit and ironically enough I felt it moved swifter than other slashers.

As for the kills, hoo boy this has some seriously good ones! It's chock full of great practical effects and some gnarly brutality which fit the film and the killer pretty darn well. As it's been hyped, the yoga kill is a major stand-out and deservingly so. As some have mentioned, it's very much akin to a Mortal Kombat fatality, it's gruesome, creative and a tad funny at the same time. There's also a great bit of off-beat humor as that body is disposed...but doesn't quite go all the way.

Another kill which really stood out for me is the very last one. It's a killer combo of it coming shockingly fast and brutal, with a nice bit of dark humor afterwards as it turns to overkill.

While this film may not be for everyone with the way it traverses and the ending can be a tad polarizing, I thought it was pretty neat with some wonderful kills on display.
