Screamscape said an announcement might come within the next two months. I pictured a May announcement because that way, most tourists have booked rooms for their vacations this Summer. I'm really hoping sooner rather than later, that way the GP will get pumped for the return of the King.

I still wish they'd amaze everyone and make this a King Kong vs. Godzilla original storyline....that would blow everyone away!

back to kuka, look at these tiny things and imagine the possibilities for limbs or necks or tails, working together in concert... and there are even smaller ones than these!

Isn't there a Kuka arm in the Seas with Nemo? And it's constantly broken?

I remember Rockin Robots. That crap broke down constantly too. Kuka has become a buzzword in the fandom - it doesn't mean it's going to immediately be amazing. People raved about advanced AA's and look at the tragically flawed Yeti design we got. A mannequin with some ropes and articulated joints would be better show than non-moving Disco Yeti.

You are correct about a Kuka arm being used in The Seas with Nemo and Friends. The Angler Fish chasing Marlin is on a Kuka arm.

Yeah, but I doubt the kuka is the issue... isn't there a transport base to that thing? Otherwise, if it is the kuka at issue, then there must be maintenance that they are skipping. FJ only has 2-5 extras that are out of service at any given time. And factories run these things into the ground 24/365.

Might I also add that the angler fish execution is a tub-of-guts idea/execution. When it works, it is vague and unclear and underwhelming at best.

A glance at the number of vehicle operating at any given time at FJ suggests that they - akin to Test Track - avoid running the full capacity unless it is "teh endtimes" of NYE or other peak periods.

Screamscape is reporting that kuka arms are going to be used on the Kong animatronic who will use them to kidnap your tour guide and run off with her. Sounds a little far fetched to me but would be absolutely awesome. Any one else hearing anything like this?

The construction is coming along nicely, just can't wait to hear something official about it as well as some concept art.

I doubt that is something Universal wants to run with, and clearly they aren't with the addition of Kong. The park is called Islands of Adventure, not World of Literature. Plus one of the major attractions (Dudley) is based on a cartoon show. It will fit fine and only a few people will ever actually care about the literature aspect of the park.

The idea that IOA is a park based on literature is completely untrue. That was never the idea. The only thing IOA is based upon is "IPs that were available in the early 90s".

BTW, read Sam Gennawey's new book on Universal. It's amazing and has more information than you would ever need to know on the development of USH, USF, and IOA.

There are insightful stories, like how the designers originally wanted to put an island in the center of the lagoon in order to drive home the "islands" concept (it's an awkward idea at first, but once you really think about it, it makes wonderful sense). A Universal exec nixed the idea because he thought it's best to force people to walk the entire park without skipping anything, resulting in what the designers called "peninsulas of adventure".

Sorry for going off-topic. Point is: Anything fits in at IOA.

Yes, that book, with it's interviews with Universal's executives of that time and earlier, sure dispels a lot of the info we hear on these forums concerning origins, why's and wherefores. It seems like people have bought into a lot of the incorrect rumor stories and given them a long life through repetitive telling of the story. The book presents a very different reality of what really went on. It's a must read for any Universal fan that wants to hear the real facts.

Isn't Sam Gennaway the guy who pretty much created the fantasy of Disneyland Paris as some paramount resort because of his writing and reader's zero actual experience with the resort?

The reality turned out to be that DLP was (and still is in many places) falling apart and poorly maintained and in many respects poorly conceived and built? But the fandom held it as a pinnacle because of his book, much like Tokyo Disneyland and DisneySea are now regarded.

I'm not saying I know the answer, because I havent researched it myself - maybe I should - but anyone can write a book and say whatever they want (maybe I should!). There are guidebooks and trivia books that say AK can't stay open late or have fireworks because of the animals. Both are blatantly not true (Disney had it open until 10pm recently and there have been fireworks there for private events).

It was in an interview with an old uni exec, he didn't just make it up just to prove you wrong. In my opinion pretty much anything can fit into IOA because who cares? If it's well themed, has a land around it and is totally kickass then I'll take it. Skull island is an island so it fits in islands. End of story

I'm pretty sure King Kong fits in IOA.

It is an adventure story.

And it's on an island.

Good enough for me.

(Now if this was going to be another New York based ride, I'd say it belongs in USF, but since we're talking about Skull Island, the park with Island in the title is probably a better fit.)
