Plus, as pointed out elsewhere, people are giving HBOMax/Rokus/etc as an Xmas present. give them time to set up their stuff.

You sure? It's one of the few DC properties to not have a bad version to make people forget.

What's wrong with Gal Godot? She's a fine Wonder Woman.

EDIT: Ah, looks like people got chapped arse over a tone deaf video early in the year. Meh. That will do nothing but nothing to affect this movie.

Eh, the issues with Gadot are larger than the Imagine video. Wonder Woman is banned in many countries due to Gadot's service in the IDF, but this issue doesn't extend far beyond the Arab world. The larger problem with Wonder Woman's worldwide appeal lies within its brand recognition overseas. The first film wasn't big in many regions, and as we're seeing with WW84's performance in Asian countries where the box office has returned to normal, interest has dropped off. I think WW84 will boost HBO Max subscriptions just fine, but the performance over Christmas won't paint a full picture of how the day and date strategy will work over the next year.

I just have to disagree

The reason stressing is popular is a show appears at midnight and you watch it WHENEVER you want.

Literally not one good reason to hold back the film past midnight. If i want to watch it then cool, if I want to wait until noon cool...but its streaming and a press of a button just put the film/show out at midnight.
Netflix literally is giving us Cobra Kai a week early, so lets be more like them and less like WB/HBO trying to control everything

Also for the on the actress topic....she is soooo perfect for the role. While the character might not appeal to China...I really really don't care Films and characters don't need to pander to everyone. If the film is good makes money and they can make money off the people who see the film that is what matters. Mulan live action film was catered for China and still flopped, so I really don't care to pander to them and make films worst.

This is Warner Bros. Picture's first "Big" film outside of Tenet, since Bird's of Prey. Setting a proper time, especially with the uncertainty of HBOMax's servers, makes sense logistically in what's considered a dead period of the day.

Ahhh yes Midnight the most busy time for streaming....and 3 AM eastern time.

If Mando finale can do it then this film should...Disney has like 2-3 times the people of HBO, more countries and a bigger IP (love Wonder Woman, the first film is my favorite DC film since the Dark Knight....but Mando is HUGE)

Once again, I feel like HBO/WB really doesn't understand streaming...this is the company who made DC universe a 6 dollars streaming service for DC comic cartoons.....yeah a buck less than Disney who put there entire library on a service vs Young Justice and 20 year old Batman cartoon (love both shows but come on....we know they aren't that big)
So yeah, I think they have meh judgement at best with these services and think even more than Disney, HBO Max launched Softer and with the new films along with finally adding CN/DC animated stuff is getting closer to making the service worth it.

I feel like you're underestimating how much of an impact the 90's Batman series had for kids and even adults.

I mean, I'll be honest. Why the Hell isn't Wonder Woman out at Midnight

I really don't get why it is being held back even until noon tomorrow. Mando was being released at 1AM and worked well, no clue why HBO thinks is needs to do something different.

I’ve got a different answer than what everyone else is thinking.

This will be the largest release ever on HBO Max and it’ll lead the service to be stressed or just crash altogether.

You have to have engineers on-call (like doctors) to respond to issues and get them fixed. As an engineer who’s been on-call, it sucks. So much.

12pm EST is 9am PST. When the service starts breaking at 9:01am, it means you can have well-rested engineers who aren’t begging for sleep. Those engineers are already pissed off that they’re expecting issues on Christmas. A midnight release just amplifies the problem.

So did Disney just buy up better servers/more.

Why is HBO going to crash when a Bigger platform did not crash this year with the biggest show of the entire year?

Honestly asking

I F...ing Love Batman. Its Pretty much perfect, I rewatched all of it on Blueray and just wow...its so dam good. I will most likely now watch all of Batman Beyond once its on HBO next month but the fact is DC universe was just not a great value outside of core comic fans and when you have Netflix/Disney at similar prices with not just more but different kinda entertainment it made NO sense for that service.
The comic stuff sure, do what you will with that but if marketed right Young Justice Season 4 can have ten times the viewers of any season before it.Because like Mando on Disney plus it proves TV is basically dead you have some hits but you need to market shows and get them on streaming if you want them to be big now.

Disney/nickelodeon/CNN allowed too many good shows to die because they did not put them on Streaming sites....look at Korra season 4 barley came out and guess what in August when it came out on Netflix's was on the top ten shows in a snap.

Wonder Woman 84 will be the largest endeavor launching on HBOMax this year from anything of WarnerMedia. It'll also be a prominent DC IP in the US that attracts kids, specifically young women and girls, looking for a symbol of enpowerment. Regardless of the controversy on Gal Gadot from her remarks of Cleopatra (which, is a can of worms that has no effect on WW84) or the international numbers not doing too hot (which, can be attributed by COVID and in China's case, a stronger emphasis on films made from China); will be launching in the US on only one of two major platforms.

Movie theaters limited in their operational capacity, or at home with no need to go anywhere on Christmas Day. It's a power move, that'll send ripples to the servers of WarnerMedia's service. Could they do more? Absolutely. I think it's kind of baffling that they haven't expanded HBOMax to Canada and select EU territories at this point. But what else can they really do at this point.

I mean for one get out on all devices I know they just got on Roku and PS5...but these should have been day one things
Second the new movies are smart and think they will help

Third they need more content I think getting old CN/DC shows is great but this should have been day one like how Disney had Disney Afternoon shows on it last year. I think HBO will be fun to have for a month but then I'm out again...I'll watch Batman Beyond and WW and there is nothing new I care about and will wait for other films and maybe get it. But they need a new show they have GOT but then let the last season be made so poorly...even if we get a new GOT spin off is anyone excited?

Honestly you know what would really work for them...something like Mando where its writers from the Batman Series coming back but this time its a limited time 8-10 episodes live action Batman series that is not as much about the action but world building and good stories.

Also are people forgetting Disney is putting out Soul Tomorrow as well? Its a PIXAR full animated movie, feel like its a big move that most are ignoring for some reason.

You and some others on their keyboard may remember that, but I haven't heard even the usual suspects online I'd expect to mention this about Gadot leading up to the release of the movie even when it was slated for like August, never mind now. People vastly overestimate how much things like that affect movies and TV shows. It'll only ever affect you if people already aren't vibin' with a franchise or series and then the "cool" thing to do is to boycott, but people liked Wonder Woman.

Just look at this season of The Mandalorian for example. There was grumbling's about BOTH Gina Carano and Rosario Dawson before the season. By the end, the show was the most talked about show on streaming of the year I'd argue and BOTH Rosario and Gina will be starring in spin-off series'. I'm considering myself to be pretty damn progressive, but the one thing I don't agree with is cancel culture over people stating their opinions on twitter or just making dumb comments. If someone's a real POS, then I'm with you. I can't look at one of my favorite movies (Baby Driver) the same anymore because of what multiple people in that show did or have been accused of doing.

The movie will be fine. I won't be watching, but that's just because I didn't like Wonder Woman. Didn't like Aquaman either, so DC and I just don't seem to jive. I really enjoyed Shazaam, but I'm just not invested enough into the DCEU at this point to care.

I forgot to check today, but does anyone know if the theaters did Thursday night previews for Wonder Woman like they normally would pre-COVID. Seems like HBO Max could drop their films at 7:00 Eastern each Thursday next year with little pushback.

Turns out the service didn’t crash!

It’s less about the hardware and more about the design of the software and systems. That kind of stuff is just learned from operational expertise. Disney bought MLB Media (name?) + Hulu, so they have tons of operational expertise (HBO ran on MLB for the longest time).

HBO Max doesn’t have nearly the level of operational expertise. That’s why I believe that they’ve been so slow to implement features like HDR/4K.

The name you are thinking about in regards to Disney/MLB Media was BAMTech. Disney has recently renamed BAMTech to be called Disney Streaming Services once they gained full control of Hulu.

Wonder Woman 84 is trending at #5 on Twitter, with Pedro Pascal at #18 (as of 3pm PST). In terms of category rankings on the appstore, HBOM current edges out Disney+ at 15th place compared to D's 18 (Hulu at 37, Netflix at 11). For comparison, HBOM was at 15 when the West Wing special happened - ahead of D+ and even Netflix - but there was less competition among the big streamers.

Look to next week to see if anyone at T or Warners crows about it. These could presage good numbers but the onus will be on Kilar to show that this move was worth multiple blockbusters and potentially key talent relations.
