Good news for people who had been looking forward to this. I'm confused how they "picked up the film" though. I assumed Disney still owned this so they would've had to sell it to another studio. The movie was essentially done when Disney cancelled it so it should be pretty cheap for Netflix to do this and they'll gain a ton of good will.

Disney sold the rights....similar to what Universal did with the Babysitter....rather than film it and complete it then sell distribution, they sold the entire project with the materials they had so far.

I was looking it up and it seems there's actually reason they announced Nimona today in particular. Blue Sky Studios went defunct exactly one year ago and with that so did Nimona. Netflix got to be the one to bring it back while Disney is already in the middle of a PR nightmare.

Also... i'm a bit surprised Netflix doesn't seem to have an animation wing or hasn't purchased a studio though. They've been buying a lot of films such as Mitchell's vs. The Machines, Vivo, and now Nimona.

Looking on Wikipedia, I guess they do have an Animation wing, but they don't have a dedicated studio that they own, which is actually probably smart. Their Animation division was created in 2018 for Klaus, but this year they seem to have a ton of different movies coming out from a ton of different smaller animation studios who normally wouldn't get such a huge reach. With WDAS and Pixar becoming pretty formulaic, it's nice to have a something different that's also included in my subscription.

Netflix Animation Department Faces Firings and Cancellations

The streamer reportedly wants Boss Baby numbers.
www.vulture.com www.vulture.com

Netflix animated shows like Bone, Lauren Faust’s Toil and Trouble, and Roald Dahl’s The Twits have been canceled; the last is allegedly going to be adapted into a feature film instead. Netflix allegedly wants to focus on projects that bring in the same number of viewers as Boss Baby, a series licensed from DreamWorks Animation.

I think we're going to be seeing Netflix clamp down on content spending quite a bit given their recent earnings call and subsequent huge stock losses. They throw too much junk out there and hope it sticks. They need to try and be more like HBO Max & Apple TV+ and focus on quality over quantity. Oh, and ADVERTISE YOUR PRODUCT. They do a terrible job at actually advertising their shows beyond Stranger Things, which needs no promotion.

The problem with Netflix is like those mystery jelly bean candies where one will taste like buttered popcorn and maybe you even find some cappuccino, but then your luck will run out and you're going to run into barf, boogers, stinky socks and rotten eggs of Netflix. Over and over and over again.

Netflix Is Being Sued By Its Own Shareholders Over Subscriber Slump - IGN

Netflix is being sued by its own shareholders amid allegations that it "misled" them about recent subscriber drops.

I just feel like Netflix is going to have to change alot to stay in Business. They are going to be bleeding money soon and to be able to go against these other apps need better shows but that cost money

Netflix is going to be cracking down on password sharing and introducing an ad-supported version, but also, it's very possible that Netflix sees gets bought by some company like Apple, Amazon or Microsoft.

Apple makes the most sense to me...they have some good shows and Ted Lasso I think is the only one really getting much attention

Yes.

So much yes.

This show has one of the best musical soundtracks in recent memory. And this teaser looks like the movie understands about the character, the story, and the music that makes it magical.

Thompson has some giant shoes to fill, consider me heavily interested; especially as this is the first full on Netflix Dahl project.

Actually this is not Netflix produced. Its netflix purchased...Sony and Universal (through Working Title who holds the rights to the musical) produced this.

The Duffer Brothers have commented on the Stranger Things spinoff. They have said they will not be involved as they'll already have worked on Stranger Things for about 10 years by the time Season 5 is done. The spin-off will not have any of the current cast in it according to them. It will be an entirely new group.

They want to pass it on to someone new who can devote their love and time to it. They'll of course remain EP's and still own the property. They'll probably also come back to write or direct every now and then.

Some quotes from them:

“Hopefully we find that right person to pass the baton to while we go on to do new stuff,” the Duffer Brothers said. They are “really jazzed” about the idea and say it is “1000% different” from Stranger Things.

“I’ve read these rumors that there’s gonna be an Eleven spinoff, that there’s gonna be a Steve and Dustin spinoff, or that it’s another number. That’s not interesting to me because we’ve done all that. We’ve spent I don’t know how many hours exploring all of that. So it’s very different.”

“The most important connective tissue I would say is the storytelling sensibility of it,” they continued. “There is story that connects to the ‘Stranger Things’ world, but it really is more about how we’re telling that story.”

Netflix’s ‘Stranger Things’ Spin-Off Will Be ‘1,000% Different’

While we know that Stranger Things season 5 is coming to end the series, probably a year and a half from now or so, there is also another project in the works, one that Netflix has not officially announced, but the Duffer Brothers seem content talking about it all the time in multiple interviews.

How bad were you expecting it to be?!
I found it boring and forgettable, not the franchise starter they wanted.

This was yet another mediocre to bad movie from The Russo Brothers post-Endgame.

So far they’ve directed Cherry and The Gray Man and were writers on Extraction and will be on Extraction 2 as well. They were producers on Everything Everywhere All At Once, so good for them on that, but they didn’t touch the film in any creative capacity. Had they directed or wrote it, I’d be far more impressed.
