I heard the name of both dragons specifically from Merlin himself back in 2000. When he used to photo op on the old floor ring that you were able to stand on to see all three inversion on DD.

It is possible that the construction crews named them that or that the company in upstate NY who created the statues named them in the workshop. A nickname can stick very hard, as I am sure some of you can attest.

I can personally attest to that Teebin. My frat name was Smalls (Named after the main character of The Sandlot), and even though I quit the frat everybody still calls me by that name. Not that it bothers me, I think the name actually fits me quite well.

Sorry for the random post

I do know that the names Pyrrock and Blizzrock were used on some of the merchandise they had at the Dagon's Keep store.

So basically...

1. The names Pyrrock and Blizzrock were mentioned by the Merlin face character.

and/or

2. The names Pyrrock and Blizzrock were printed on merchandise.

Does anybody have either video of interaction with Merlin where he mentions their names or merchandise showing the names? I thought maybe if a tag doesn't show it, a dragon-specific piece of merchandise might say the name in the barcode. So even if it doesn't say it on the item, a barcode could still prove helpful.

Thanks much guys! I really appreciate it.

Yeessh... did this years back with the bumper question on spider-man. Call the company in upstate NY that created them. I believe they are outside of Syracuse. They also sculpted the Hawk Gryphons that greet people into the LC.

I'm pretty certain I've seen the names Pyrrock and Blizzrock mentioned on the IOA map way back when.

I might just have to try that. I've tried contacting a few of the designers by e-mail, but no luck there. I'll probably be calling this week.

I found this site (http://www.florida-project.com/islands-of-adventure-guidemaps/1999-august) and, while very informative, shows no sign of the names either.

Ok, I just went to a lot of work re-tracking down the company that created the dragons: Adirondack Scenic, Inc.

Theme park nuts please bookmark and copy the company names in the following article:
http://themeparkcanuck.com/2012/02/24/the-making-of-ioa-the-lost-continent/

Website:
http://www.adkstudios.com/

Adirondack Studios
439 County Route 45
Argyle, New York 12809
518-638-8000

Examples of their work, starting with the dragons:

http://www.adkstudios.com/amusement-leisure-attractions/the-simpsons-the-ride/
http://www.adkstudios.com/amusement-leisure-attractions/revenge-of-the-mummy/

(oh, and by the way, it is outside of Saratoga Springs and not Syracuse. I knew it was an 'S' name.)

Hand carved out of aerated concrete over steel superstructures, these iconic creatures joined a menagerie of mythical sculptures engineered by Adirondack to withstand hurricane conditions.

Couldn't withstand a few sledgehammers. That's for sure.

Glad that a few of you read the website and enjoyed it. Do you remember each company mentioned in the article? I had a difficult time digging up something that I found 8 years ago. I have made a personal copy of the text. Have you?

Another website I had bookmarked listing every company that created IOA is now gone as it was listed on an old domain of the TEA. All of the online documentation of the history of IOA is disappearing. Grab it now and keep it if is important to you! Even if it is important for you to prove a point years from now.

Please allow the OP to call the company. It is up to the OP to let us know what luck he had regarding the sculpture names.

Not sure if this is the same list, but if you didn't save the TEA one, this site has one too:

That is indeed a copy of it! Thanks! I should have done the same at the time.

Edit:
themeparkcanuk.com and jinkybuffalo.com. Now those are not sites on the common themepark fan circuit, and yet they contain more info than any on the circuit could ever hope for. Ain't life grand.

It's really unfortunate that the best part of Lost Continent was a casualty of Potter. But, all for the greater good. It really is fascinating the work that goes into these theme parks.

The stuff you guys find... Fascinating. And grand advice from Teebin by the way; I now have something of a personal archive on my laptop of interesting things like construction photos, behind the scenes stuff, anything rare or noteworthy - you don't know when you might log on one day to find it gone forever.

Reminds me, where did I put that backup hard drive...

So I have your answer, the dragons were officially named Pyrrock and Blizzrock. I got to interview Catherynne A. Jean, the art director for Dueling Dragons. Discovered some really great information. She's a delight to interview and she's very passionate about the project. More later.
