Great news for Universal. Devastating news for movie theatre chains.

and they typically split half the money they get with theaters right? this is great news for universal. Idk if theaters are done yet personally though.

As I understand, the split is 50/50 for the first couple of weeks and then as it keeps playing, the ratio slides towards the studio's favor. That's what helped something like The Greatest Showman snag a nice profit despite a terrible opening weekend.

It only means a $20 million opening weekend on a film budgeted at $90M before marketing.

It would’ve made more in theaters. But it will probably have longer legs at home because of the circumstances we’re in. Also, Studios take home 80% of digital sales.

I think the Deadline article actually estimated 20m for the first day, which might actually mean this comes out with a nice profit at the end of all of this considering the 80% revenue split (60m "OW" with 3x "legs" from a VOD release + cheaper production costs and maybe cheaper marketing too since it didnt go to theatres)

Much of the marketing they did was done in advance in anticipation of a theatrical release. There was also a heavy pre-release campaign on TV and the internet so I imagine they still spent a decent amount.

Also, how does it have cheaper production costs? Production was done on this film by the time they decided to change from Theaters to VOD.

For the circumstances their in, really glad to hear they did well! I don’t expect this to be a trend quite yet but films they expect to underperform I can see using this tactic going forward. If the budget was around $90 mil, and they made close to 1/3 of that this weekend then they’re doing alright given the circumstances. Good move by Universal pictures here.

If this is true, this is a massive one off. Good luck finding these type of numbers once people are back to work and people have lives again.

True... but it movie theatres remain closed people are going to be making $$ again, not that it’s necessarily going to go to a VOD film, but, I think this could be common practice thru this summer for smaller/expected to underperform studio films. Imagine if a an indie got a response even half, or even 1/3 of what this got? Thatd be huge for them.

Fascinating to see the gamble playing off, as it makes me really think of the future, in a way.

I'll be interested to see if SCOOB does similarly well.

If nothing else, it might mean the future of kids movies is at home.
