My belief is that getting rights to build an entire SpongeBob land ate up part of the original budget. Basically, anything I disagree with, I’m going to blame on SpongeBob :yum

In other news, UKR is FINALLY seeing actual park work. The footprints for the early foundation work line up with the conceptual art we were shown in December after they had broken ground. Almost all of the park guest parking is complete. First foundations will probably be paved soon!

Wow, only like 4 days have gone by since the recent drone footage, and already Universal Parkway has been paved. I honestly wasn’t sure what street was being named this, but felt that the previous Fields Street/Frisco Street was confusing. At least end Frisco Street at the intersection and have Fields end at Panther Creek. Looks like that’s what they did, and simply renamed that section for Universal. Good on them.

This was posted two weeks ago, so the interior staff loop and staff parking isn’t as complete as in the picture, but it gives you a better close up of that foundation you can see in the above “tweet.”

Probably not the final version, but you'd think a Kids park would have more characters involved into the exterior? Doesn't feel very inviting.

That is one ugly hotel.

Yeah, on the other hand they probably expect to change out the lands every 8-10 years. If you need to update the hotel experience too it's becoming more expensive. But it could look nicer for the parents (I'm sure the kids will love it).

This isn’t the 90s anymore most hotels constructed in the 21st century are not themed like that anymore unfortunately.

I'm not expecting giant Minion or Shrek figures like at the All-Star resorts, but there's nothing in the art that makes it obvious its a Universal Kids themed resort.

The newish Toy Story Hotel in Tokyo is a nice recent example of something “fun” and character focused.

Story on this hotel, and explanation for where the art came from.

Ruling on potential hotel for Frisco's Universal Kids resort tabled

Potential action on a facade plan for a hotel at the Universal Kids Resort in Frisco has been tabled until Nov. 19.

Was submitted to city by Gensler. All projects outside of the theme park proper will need public city approval for exteriors, so we get to see these!

Tell that to the legoland hotels. . .

I've stayed at better looking Ramada Inns

Just food for thought: This is an early design concept, not a final render...

I plan on staying at the hotel if it’s fairly priced

I’m hoping for theming in the inside, the outside would be cool but the inside matters a lot more for me

I understand that I am not a kid, but adults are the ones who will be booking these rooms. I feel that the exterior gives off a fun youthful vibe. It kind of also screams Nickelodeon, without the huge gawdiness of the former Nick Hotel. And that’s what we all need to understand. This CANNOT be the Nick Hotel. The paint scheme was terrible because corporate Nick was stuck with those colors. They tried to incorporate their characters which were not timeless. Sure SpongeBob may be, but he’s still a bit polarizing even today. Jimmy Neutron was just as huge back in the day, and then flatlined. I mean, he had his own ride at Universal once!

The inside rooms could very easily be decorated with IPs, and changed out with the times. They could even not be. I stayed at the Legoland Hotel in California, and they weren’t themed to IP. I mean, it was still Lego, but not something I could go to a toy store and buy. Not a movie or tv show I could watch.

Another thing to consider is exactly why the city needs to approve this. It will be visible to everyone driving up and down the toll way. It absolutely cannot be clashy and gawdy from the street. And depending on how well the greenery is, not visible to the Cobb Hills residents. At the same time, it can’t be sterile contemporary architecture like the hotel resorts have been built recently. This isn’t just a hotel. This is the MAIN park entrance. It needs to express a fun enticing visual aspect of childhood to anyone of any age that may see it.

Also, slightly on topic, everyone here knows that the hotel went vertical last month, right?

If it's the entrance to the park in addition to the hotel facade I hope there's a bit more to it in the final render/concept art.

I imagine it being a kiddie version of this other Universal park entrance:

Normally I’d agree- except this is also the park entrance. So exterior is significantly more important here.

You have to walk through city walk before passing the large “universal rotating world” logo prior to crossing a very pretty bridge over water to get to this entrance.
Meaning the lead up is very important and elevates the experience to the entrance in Beijing.

Universal kids may have a small lead up to that, admittedly, blah facade.
If it doesn’t? Woof.

It’s not even the colors so much as the flat 2D aesthetic. It needs dimension in the worst way. But again, we don’t know the lead up to this so it’s tough to judge in its entirety
