The day they close Spiderman is the day IoA dies with it.

Okay, I may be a little melodramatic here, but closing Spidey would be a tragic blow to IoA. It is still to this day one of my favorite rides ever. If there is one ride that should close before Spidey it's Kong.

Seeing it close in USJ shows me it’s not as sacred as I thought I guess.

Aye. Still the best Scoop ride and arguably the best Universal ride ever. But even then I know it’s not long for this world.

Given all the things that need attention at the resort, I cannot imagine replacing MSI is anywhere near a high priority for Universal. The attractions remain popular, the contract is in perpetuity, and it prevents their primary competitor from having access to one of their signature IPs.

Universal owns the version of King Kong used in the ride. They do not own Spider-Man. Our ape friend is likley here for the long haul.

Wasn't that a different contractual agreement?

I don't think it's melodramatic at all.

I would never visit IOA again.

IOA would not be “ruined”. Velocicoaster and hayrides still exist. It’d still suck, but we’ve survived without kongfrontation, without bttf, without jaws, and so on. Even if marvel closes, we will be fine. IOA will be fine. I promise you.

Things like these have always been what universal does. Unfortunate but it’s true.

I think IOA, is indeed ruined, if it removes its best ride. There’s just no need. I’d lose respect, and probably vacation days, if UOR makes the decision to close MSHI for Pokemon. There’s literally other space to build said land.

I’d have to imagine that even in the doomer timeline where we lose Spider-Man immediately, it’d get replaced by a quality dark ride of some kind. With USF getting the Rockit replacement there’s no further need for new coasters unless Universal wants to turn IOA into a coaster park.

I think they’ve always been more focused on merch sales than guest satisfaction. All of the classic USF rides which are now gone I’m sure had extremely high GSATs. Some of which likely had higher GSATs than what replaced them. However, it all comes down to IP relevance and merch sales. As much as JAWS was arguably a better attraction than Gringotts, they sell more wands and robes than they did JAWS t-shirts and beach towels. Plus Gringotts came with a whole land of new retail and dining opportunities by offering a smaller ‘main attraction’ than Amity and a larger ‘land’ in exchange (more opportunities/room to sell you something) but that’s beside my point.

Marvel is extremely popular and Spidey/Hulk possess some of the highest wait times in the park as well as strong GSAT scores. Despite this, if Universal comes across an IP which is more financially attractive (more merch sales and/or fewer payments for use of outside IP), history shows that Universal will listen to the financial advisors rather than the guests. However, I do think that they are slowly getting better with this luckily with more attention being paid to legacy properties.

There's a backlog of areas at both parks that need redone in the very near future. That'll take a good decade alone. MSHI isn't going anywhere, even if Disney offers a sweet deal. Universal isn't going to rebuild a huge successful area of the park that doesn't need rebuilt, especially with Epic opening.

Not to be that guy but…
That’s what we all said about monsters Inc and animation courtyard. Money does talk sometimes.

Honestly, at this point I have given up on thinking any theme park company “wouldn’t do that because it wouldn’t make sense” because history has shown that as long as money is involved, they can and will. Nothing is impossible. I’m not saying you are unfounded in thinking how you do. It is very logical from the perspective of what we do know. But I honestly think that anything is on the table. I don’t EXPECT Pokémon to go where marvel is, but I’m not saying it WONT happen. Yknow?

I'm gonna throw out a curveball thought when it comes to MSHI--but I wonder if Universal is valuing the weight of what they are currently tied with in the terms of a business relationship with Disney, combined with the diminishing returns of several aspects of Marvel Entertainment (specifcally the cinematic ones) alongside the need to sever their ties with 20th Century at a specific moment in time.

I'm not saying it's great logic, but perhaps it might be prudent for Universal to consider the options of what might happen with taking Marvel out of the picture? MSHI has had over 2 decades of use, and has had changes and updates given to it. It's one of the most aged IP based lands in the themed entertainment industry, but I wonder if it's held back on evolution and modernization by that of the current contract outlines. A good thing to probably say on the MSHI thread, but I atleast wanted to say it here.

Given what’s happening at USJ … I don’t think anyone can say Spider-Man is truly safe at IOA.
