Extend your LA trip & just see the actual show here at the Hollywood Pantages?

....or do a 2nd LA trip & see it in a BIG historic theatre (aka Chinese Theatre) where it seats over 900 people & the imax is massive. Plus you can snag a photo of Judy Garland's footprint in the forecourt.

I don’t wanna jump into silly forum wishlisting, but, with how much marketing is behind this film, how confident they seem, the “Experiences” at both UOR, USH, and now this, I am completely convinced if this is a success we will get permanent theme park attraction. Show, land, ride, both, I am positive we will get something greenlit. If MIB and World Expo have to go, Oz being there works well for me and could be a good weenie for the end of the park.

Okay I’ll stop.

While for sure someone could have made this not work

To me Wicked was always going to be a pretty easy win. Its just a solid story, with great music and the characters are great

They made a great casting choose with Glinda and the Wizard because those actors draw people, the main actress I'm sure will kill it but just saying the star power of this film is pretty smart. Its hitting lots of different demographics

I know money is the reason but never got why Disney didn't fight harder for this IP, Disney has always wanted to have an OZ IP and this was there chance...I mean for me Wicked is like a Disney animated movie but a little more adult (not that kids dont love it just some of the themes are more for adults)

So yeah, I think unless the film just magically sucks your right and this is going to be huge.....wonder if we might see a part 3 of the musical based "books"

While the movie doesn't come until Spring in Japan....Wicked currently is touring here and is rumoured that the final day of the tour is when there will be the official Japan release date for the film

Universal snatched up the rights immediately after the book came out....which is why they are owners of the musical. Disney did have rights to create a non musical tv show in 2008. They never made it

Disney has/had the Oz film rights. Hence "Oz the Great & Powerful" in 2013.

Disney had the rights to the books for a while, although those are now public domain, but never the the 1939 movie (outside GMR of course). This is why Oz TG&P doesn't quite match the '39 version (apparently they hired a lawyer on set just to tell them how much they should differentiate).

As a substantial reimagining, Wicked (both book and musical although in this modern age rights certainly tied together) is its own thing separate from both the books and the '39 film.

Thank you.

So for sure we could see more movies afterwards if these films do well if they own the book rights

Correct. This isn't news to me. No ruby slippers (silver in book) & Margaret Hamilton's iconic look, etc. (Although that silhouette did get snuck in there!)

Even the nightmare fuel "Return to Oz" film was Disney.

My point being, Disney already did their own Oz thing.

Sure there could be more movies, but can they resist the temptation to not hire Lin Manuel Miranda?

Sure but that was years after Wicked

Which is why I assumed money was the issue and they just made their own film that in most ways could not hold a candle to the OG Oz or Wicked

Disney wishes they could have something that is in OZ but also big....they got lucky and the Alice and Wonderland films worked but outside of that they just during that era could not make live action fairy tales that made big bucks or be in the theme parks as they would have liked

Also Disney did Return of Oz, funny enough Six Flags MM uses as the idea for Oz in their scarezone...no idea how Six Flags gets away with taking ideas from Disney but its cool to see

Return to Oz came out in 1985

Money? An issue for Disney? That's funny.

Oz TG&P is a fun prequel & pairs well with the 1939 film, while still being its own thing. And it was never meant to be Wicked. What it did end up being was the Disney version of "Army of Darkness" (no joke, Sam Raimi totally recycled his own movie lol)

Yes, which is why I said I was supprised they didn't have the rights to Wicked

Disney for years has wanted an OZ IP of their own but it has never worked out....the muppets version is even pretty meh.

Oz didn't make enough money in Disney's eyes but their other issue was not having the balls to remake Wizard of Oz. Which is why they didn't adapt the other books (just like when they gave up on Narnia)

I wonder if Wicked will end with a BTTF Part III style montage teaser for part 2

I don't think Universal has made an actually good big blockbuster movie in a long long time.

I got my tickets! As soon as they went on sale last night. And if it's any indication, I checked my Dolby showing on opening night to see if I could invite someone else and my whole row is already gone and almost all the seats are sold after only 1 day of pre-sales.

It'll certainly be the best musical they've made in a while, unless you fancy Cats.

Saw the stage version of the musical today in Osaka. when the hotel clerk asked oh why are you staying one night in Osaka, and I said I was seeing wicked, she said her and her friends when to see it 10 times in the past few months (it started showing in Osaka back at the end of August).

While it’s anecdotal, this movie if they get people who paid roughly 100 dollars ten times to watch the stage version to watch the movie which will be much cheaper than it’s gonna be a box office success
