Reading DisneyWar, a major part of the book revolves around Eisner trying to capitalize on the hotel business around the Walt Disney World resort. Notably, he didn't just want to build hotels, but ones with incredibly unique and boundary pushing design and architecture that defined the field. He understood that Disney had the opportunity to build unique and themed structures more than any other hotel chain out there. He even went as far as to consult and hire huge names in the field of architecture at the time to design many of the major Eisner-era expansions. He didn't want the hotels to look like any other hotel on the street.
Clearly, this art has been long lost. How hideous and how boring.
To be fair, nothing Universal has built since Cabana Bay has really had much of a theme. Unless you count Sapphire Falls as themed, which I don’t.They found out their fan base would pay insane amounts of money for hotels that cost less to build. Not to mention the whole DVC cash cow.
