Even though the layoffs definitely bite, his firing is a lone exception. And with this news happening the same day the new board at RCID just figuring out they've been rendered irrelevant by a clause approved months ago, it's a nice silver lining to the day.

Bob Iger was interviewed by Time Magazine as part of the Time 100:

time.com

Bob Iger on Ron DeSantis, Gambling, and Making Job Cuts at Disney

"The more efficient you are at running a company, the more you can spend on what is the most necessary. In this case, it's quality and creativity."
time.com time.com

"One of the biggest decisions you’re facing is the fate of Hulu, whether Disney will buy it out. There’s a deadline approaching. What are the considerations that you’re thinking about as you make that decision?
We own about two thirds of Hulu, and Comcast owns the other piece, and they actually have the right to put their piece to us, in other words, force us to buy them out. If they decide to do that, then we have no choice but to buy them out."

Yeah, i'm not sure why so many outlets seem confused about this. Chapek screwed any leverage Disney had when he created this 2024 buyout date where the contract gave Comcast the right to force Disney to buy them out. Of course, Chapek WANTED to buyout Hulu. The clear difference here is that Iger doesn't but likely will have no choice.

The question then becomes, since it will very likely become a 100% Disney owned company next year, will Disney finally merge Disney+ and Hulu? Or will they still look to sell off Hulu to an investment firm or something? If they plan on keeping Hulu after gaining 100%, it honestly just seems like smarter business to merge all three Disney services, jack up the price to Netflix/HBO Max levels and save money on the backend by not having to pay so many people to run three different services and also to have to pay for the servers to allow those different streaming services to work.

That was Chapek's plan. The question becomes does Iger follow through with it or does he find a way to sell off Hulu.

In current news, Iger's contract has been extended through 2026. Can't say I'm surprised.

Dam

They hopefully will start training some people for the role. Feels like a CEO change is needed sooner

With Pixar flopping, the Theme Parks flopping, the battle with Florida, the writers strike, it makes zero sense to change now. Iger is here until he can’t physically do this anymore imo.

I mean, isn't her apart of the issues

Like the last guy didn't last 2 years so many of these flops were approved by Iger.

He’s never leaving.

But seriously, this is more an indication of the larger problems within the company and them having a tough time finding someone to replace him who isn’t a moron.

Depends which parks we're talking about. If it's the domestic parks, then yeah, they're printing money. Paris & Hong Kong though? That's another story.

This Fox deal really screwed them in a lot of ways. I'm surprised that there hasn't been more blowback and blame on Iger for pursuing it as hard as he did. In whatever sequel to DisneyWar comes out in 30 years I think it's really going to be seen as a key misstep in the company's history.

Comcast played their hand well. Upping the price of the disastrous Fox acquisition has certainly weakened Disney.

Agree

No idea why yhr Fox Deal was worth it, if they wanted Avatar and some Marvel stuff I'm sure they could have found a better deal.

On day the Fox deal will make them money but compared to the Star Wars/Marvel deals the company really will be taking a hit from fox for a long time
