I mean. Every coaster has to be eventually if you plan on keeping the same coaster, right?
I think absent the Marvel contract Universal would have replaced Hulk rather than rebuild. They don't seem to keep old attractions past their sell by date for the most part. Just look at the talk of MiB replacement, great ride and good GSATs but it is long in the tooth.
Like someone said a few thousand times.......... we're mmoooovvvin' onnnn.....

Yes and no.

I’ve never seen anything official but Hulk probably would have been the most cycled B&M coaster ever when it was refurbished and it was in pretty bad shape.

Outside of Disney and Universal, most coasters by the time they need refurbished will be outdated and it makes sense just to replace them with something new.

Hulk was an iconic coaster and it’s still pulling massive crowds today. I mentioned The Big One earlier and that’s equally iconic to a Brits.

Yeah, Disney has the nostalgia problem, they start talking about removing MK mountains and they would have backlash, if they (gasp) added one the community would be insane so they have to do the refurbs (supposed to do....) to keep them up. Same as Universal those rides have mega cycles compared to other installations that are seasonal.

I mean. In the case of Universal and Disney, it is definitely a different beast for them. They have nostalgia, and also IPs tied into their attractions. So definitely rebuilding a coaster is something that would need to be considered for something like Hulk, or SM, or BT, or maybe now Hagrids / JW Coaster.

Disney is throwing nostalgia to the wind with Splash Mountain. It's changing and they don't seem to care that people are mad because just as many if not more are happy. That's actually happening. And tbh, i'm a little annoyed that they haven't replaced track on either BTM or Space since either opened. It's sorely needed.

All three mountains have issues.

It’s not even just seasonal parks. I’ve seen Kraken and Kumba running with only 1 train plenty of times. Never seen less than 2 on Hulk.

It’s hard to think of theme parks having the longevity that they have. Take Hagrid’s for example, in 20 years time, it will be almost 40 years after the first film came out. Beetlejuice is barely over 30 years old just now.

Marvel is currently experiencing a renaissance and Jurassic Park is just as popular now as it ever was and that’s over 25 years since the first film.

In 20 years they’ll probably be remaking the Harry Potter films :surprised:

Disney's success is it's own failure. Covid is playing hell with the Disney parks and the parks have always been so busy that taking down a classic ride for a 2 or 3 year refurb is going to piss off a lot of people. Hopefully Tron will be a big enough distraction to allow Space Mountain to get fixed.

It has a TV mini series written all over it.

I know what they said but I will believe Splash when it reopens AFTER the change. They got a track record with announcing and not following through.

Oh carp, I'm off topic. Did you see that osprey twitter account causing trouble? Plastic won't do it for that guy I think.

Mice Chat was discussing that a few weeks ago. They speculated that it might happen at Disneyland, though down the road, but it may end up not happening
at WDW.

Splash is project that they might get actual pushback for cancelling though. I think it's going to happen, but not anytime soon.

I wouldn't be surprised if Velocicoaster is open for a year or more before Florida's Splash even closes to start construction.

Please stay on topic guys. If you want to discuss Tron or Splash or whatever, plase do it in the appropriate thread, unless you are discussing it in a way that is comparing the rides to the Velocicoaster.

Besides Hulk, what are some other examples of coasters being completely retracked?

Don't say RMC, that's cheating

Continuous replacements and changes happen on steel coasters during off seasons or refurbishments. Wooden coasters are replaced as needed so even a decade after the ride opens it's almost totally new.

Big Thunder and Space Mountain in DL. The Big One at Blackpool was recently retracked in parts.
The great American scream machine at sfog was partially retracked during the winter off season. It's my understanding that it will be fully retracked this winter. It is a woodie, but it really, really needed it. Also at sfog the Mindbender is currently being completely retracked... I can't remember, but I believe that's a Vekoma... feel free to correct me.

and it was in pretty bad shape.
Was it though?

I can think of over a dozen coasters that are in worse shape. Two of them are at Universal.

They re-tracked Hulk before they needed to. Maybe (likely) because of their contract. Maybe because they were flush with cash. Either way, they appeared to be proactive with it as no one heard of structural issues.

Sapphire Falls, Hulk, Toothsome, Kong. What a year 2016 was. Only to be outdone by 2017!

I heard plenty about the Hulk's footers and that was cited (fan only) as the cause for the refurb.

That Osprey is getting po'ed at the plastic, he says so on twitter

Keep in mind that this was 5 years before it was demolished.

I'm sure there were photo of the track in the mist tunnel not long before the refurb and it was considerably worse than that.
