I brought up Force Awakens being a pure sequel - for the severe nostalgia angle/ hand job it gives to the fans and the fact it is Canon.
Vs
Ghostbusters, being a reboot/origins. My question was if Ghostbusters would prefer a SEQUEL, a la Force Awakens and its TREMENDOUS use of nostalgia. One where old crew meets new crew.

It had zero to do with gender.

For someone who hates being called a misogynist you sure do like to bring up gender and male vs female success.

I was simply looking at the reverse of your analogy it makes sense to me. If your asking if people would have preferred a sequel like FA as opposed to a reboot like GB it seems reasonable to also ask if SW fans would have preferred a reboot like GB instead of the sequel they got as FA. I'm only bringing up the fact that they're female as I don't see anything else they really changed. It's the one thing everyone's talking about with the new film as it's the only way they really set it apart, hence why I'm calling it a gimmick.

I KNOW RIGHT I WANNA SEE TITTIES. IM NOT A MISOGYNIST.

Why did the have to cast the mid 40's fat actress, the mid 40's old hag Kristen Wiig, some 30 year old dyke Ellen wannabe, and a 6'2" mid 40/ big black woman.

And once again. You cannot compare the World (and what it means) of Star Wars to Ghostbusters. If you tried to reboot Star Wars the Earth would fall out and Trump would be Supreme Ruler. Its the one thing they talk about because people have lost their minds over the dumbest thing.

I am completely calm. And if I weren't? I wouldn't. Not for you. Because your kind of attitude is ridiculous. Claiming to be free of misogyny and then liking a post calling an actress fat therefore unwatchable and saying she should be replaced by a fake tit, anti-vax blonde who is now on the radio and not tv for a reason.

You calm down it's just the Internet. It's just a remake. It's just a trailer.

You were the one that compared GB to SW.

I liked the post because I took it as a joke, I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure that was the intention. I appreciate your position. Like I said all along the movie looks like a fun movie not necessarily one I want to see though. I'll be enjoying my Ecto-Cooler and am thankful for this movie bringing that back. You don't seem to be in a state to really rationally discuss this. Again I appreciate your position I just don't feel like arguing it quite on that level. It's just a movie after all.

The first Ghostbusters was cast with three of the most gifted TV comedy actors from SCTV/SNL. This version is being cast with three of the most gifted comedy actors from SNL and screen. They just happen to be female.

This is just like when J.K. Rowling cast a black female to portray Hermione. Who says Hermione can't be black? Who says the Ghostbusters can't be female? Who says a Jedi can't be female, or black/Hispanic/Asian, etc?

I know it may come as a shock to some of you who have been used to white men in these roles or even roles in real life, like President of the United States. But turns out even they can be black. Or female.

I definitely agree with this. My only issue is I think it would have been so much better had they given them truly unique characters and built upon the world of Ghostbusters, much like Star Wars did with Rey. When you essentially recast the movie it will only draw comparisons of each actor to their previous counterpart and to me this is a real disservice to these great actors.

I will not be comparing any of these ladies to the boys that were in the movie 30 years ago. The comedy type in itself is drastically different. It's not versus. They can both exist without doing a disservice or needing to constantly compare. Have a beer , kick back and try to enjoy without already knowing its unoriginal and bad based on a trailer.

And Rey is Luke. Please watch those trailers and tell me she's not Luke.

It's definitely odd about the misogyny just because this is not the first of female heroes in a typically male driven format. I'd be surprised if anyone was rooting against Ripley in Aliens because she wasn't a man and pretty much made all the soldiers look like wimps compared to her.

Yeah I love strong female characters. I guess my main complaint with the female actors in GB is the parts were written as male parts and I kind of think that's going to end up making them weak characters. Possibly the comedy will overpower that. For what it's worth I would have the same complaints about the GB reboot even if they used male actors. I'm just not a fan of repeating the same exact thing over again. I didn't like the Star Trek reboot for this reason as well.

Alien doesn't hold the same kind of nostalgia as Ghostbusters for anyone alive in the 80's. But if Alien starred Stallone or Willis instead and they tried to cast a female lead in a reboot today, chances are we'll be having a similar conversation.

What? Again, the assumption that the characters are the same as the original except in name and gender n the characters:

"We want to have fun with giving nods to what came before, but we don’t want to be bound by it because Katie ( screenwriter) and I already have talked at length and we have really fun ideas for things. But we want to tell the stories that we would like to tell, which means we want to tell the character arcs that we want to tell, which means we want to start with some of our characters in a different place or with different personalities and things they have to overcome and learn through the experience of this first movie."

I'd argue about the nostalgia of both, but point taken about a female reboot.

Probably has to do with the 80's life. Back then it was black & white. Girls were supposed to watch "girl stuff" and boys watched "boy stuff".

"You play with your Barbie, I'll be playing the Ghostbuster firehouse!"

Today, it's a lot more complex (in a good way). i.e. If anyone was a brony in the 80's, they wouldn't be as "accepted" as they are today.

Yes. So you take boys who are now men who grew up in that culture/space in time and their nerdy/dorky ghost hunters are being "taken over" by sissy ladies bc Hollywood is out of ideas/unoriginal NOT because it's a great and beautiful moment and cool/interesting thing to do.

This says more about the mind of the viewer than it does about the film.

Anyone else notice that during the Times Square scene in the trailer, the scenery morphs to 1970s/80s Times Square? #timetravel
