No specific dates, but Cast Previews have been announced (starting sometime in Late April, I believe).

The score for this will likely be a blast

Based on this ad, and some of the other PR copy accompanying this material on Disney social media, apparently the story of the attraction will involve "saving" Epcot.

Intentional meta commentary?

If this is the Epcot we’re saving then let it go. Lol

Why are people who are upset about lack of thematic cohesion ok with Epic being four completely unrelated IPs? Just feels like a bit of a double standard.

Crapping on Disney is a national pastime for the theme park community. Don't ruin it for us. ;D

Jokes aside, the ride is roller coaster, and I'd argue that Disney knows theming is much less important than the ride itself. They've already made Rocket the Racoon animatronics for Tower of Terror, so there's no new development time and there's no reason that couldn't build a couple more for various show scenes. That said, this is probably one of the few rides where a theme park can get away with minimal story because the thrill level of the ride itself is the primary draw, so why bother? (See Space Mountain, Incredicoaster, and Tron for relevant examples from Disney and Velocicoaster from Universal.)

In short, there is zero incentive for Disney to theme this ride beyond what is minimally required.

Epic Universe has been designed from the beginning to be a grab bag of IP-based (and, within themselves, thematically-coherent) lands. Epcot was intended to be something different.

I hold the parks to the thematic standards they tell me to hold them to. Epcot should not just be a grab bag, because Disney has two other theme parks at WDW perfectly suited (thematically and otherwise) to hold almost any concept they want to put in them.

It may unfortunately be a wise decision, then, to not bother with trying to build a park with a cohesive theme.

I highly doubt we'll ever see another new theme park with one theme for the entire park, ala Animal Kingdom. It will all be Epic Universe style or what they're doing to WDSP in Paris. A bunch of lands with the most popular IPs at the time.
It will be real interesting to see what these parks will do when an IP because old or not relevant anymore; its easy to switch out Mr. Toad for Winnie the Pooh, or Kong for Mummy, but how do you replace Pandora? Or Toy Story Land?

Of course, even Tokyo DisneySea has Toy Story and is getting Fantasy Springs. I'm sure the latter will be excellent but just goes to show that a single theme can be very hard to stick with.

They will replace or retheme. Epic as you pointed out, has no overarching theme and separate entrances. They could merely close an entrance and do everything they need to do without major work walls everywhere.

And this isn’t a specific response to you @UPSguy, but something I’ve noticed/been frustrated by on the boards recently. I think we also need to realize that these designers and companies care/think about these things as much as we do - as they have actual stakes. It’s a bit silly to sit here and participate in “what about-isms”. Do we really think a major corporation, who is investing big money into a project hasn’t weighed the cost/benefit analysis of a decision? As though they haven’t considered “Hey - with only themed lands, we’d have to replace them at some point.” They have left huge expansion plots at EU. If the market changes and themed lands go out of style, they can easily make an expansion pad a “grab-bag” land with an overarching theme like MK.

Edit: Sorry about the rant - I just realized what thread this is in.

Yup, especially one like Epcot's which revolved around "edutainment" and cultural learning by "visiting" other countries (which was a novel idea at the time) so that you could understand different parts of the world better. The second the internet was born, most of Epcot's original theme of being a world's fair lost it's luster. All of this could be found online and especially with things like Wikipedia out there or my ability to book a trip to any country I want online, Epcot's original vision became irrelevant.

I'm gonna be honest and say I don't have much of a problem with the path Epcot is on, except for the fact that with everything they're doing, we're only gaining a net total of one ride in the park. Now i'd argue we're gaining two, as by the end of it's days UoE saw next to no ridership. This will be the most popular ride of the park and probably balloon the popularity of a ride like Mission Space with Test Track's popularity remaining strong. I do wish we'd have at least gotten the Poppins ride or something.

The World Nature side of Epcot should be a focus for Epcot going forward. World Discovery is pretty fleshed out (unless Chevrolet wants to update Test Track again), but World Nature has Figment JIYI is in World Celebration, but I prefer which BADLY needs a redo, The Land which is actually fine and in great shape (it's probably the most 80's Epcot thing still in the park), Nemo feels stale, although The Seas Pavilion is still fun to browse around in. There is room for expansion on that side of the park between Seas and Land, but a Journey into Imagination redo absolutely must be done first or simultaneously. Also, yes, I know that JIYI is in World Celebration technically, but I still prefer to look at the park from an East-Spine-West perspective.

So four different previews announced. CM, AP, DVC, and D23. I'd be surprised if Golden Oak and Club 33 don't get access as well.

There's... a lot... but I'd say it comes down to what's been sold.

Universal, so far, has just said they're building a park based on popular worlds of fiction.

Disney with Epcot, DMGM, and DAK really sold up the singular themed park. They then sold their product at a premium on that claim, their execs boasting about them being the best because of it, fans claiming it was the best because of it, etc. So then when Disney decides a central theme isn't needed, just an aesthetic, yeah it'll be pushed back upon.

This is why I believe Epcot shouldn't be adopting the 1980s iconography and logo work and then raising comparisons to the old park. They should actually be rebranding, rededicating, and moving forward in a new direction.

Agreed, for a theme/vision which is pretty much dead, they sure love to acknowledge the old Epcot like it's still relevant and active outside of the Land Pavilion. They bend over backwards to try and justify how this attraction fits into Epcot with educational aspects and the like, however that educational aspect is most likely going to be dropped in the pre-show.

I agree that them bending over backwards to try and say how it fits is ridiculous. I'm fine with them using the iconography because tbh, it looks great. Things like the acrylic pylons being back or the use of the original Epcot logo don't bother me because the pylons/fountain looks WAY better than the graveyard that replaced the original pylons. And let's not pretend that the EpCoT logo looked good, either.

So basically im fine with them using older aesthetics, but not for story purposes.

The goal here seems to be a mix of nostalgia with a modern space adventure. Not unlike the Guardian of Galaxy movies. If we take out the “educational” aspect, I actually think it works quite well for both Marvel and Disney properties .

on to other topics , the commercial and the press release referencing a “family coaster” has me pretty concerned with the thrill level here. Speed doesn’t appear to be really referenced anywhere

Please help me understand…drop the word “screenz” in a single post and there’ll be 50 responses about why it doesn’t matter because the GP doesn’t care and the fanboys are whiney.

Talk about Epcot rightfully moving away from an outdated model that only the most hardcore of fanboys even recognize and it’s, “forget the GP, they’re disrespecting the vision from 40 years ago!”

Genuinely just trying to understand so when I come back with my review after Passholder previews I’m not saying the “wrong” thing.
