So, an Osaka method albeit with the mazes as upcharge individually.

That..isn't that bad of an idea, to be completely honest.

In theory it's not a bad idea given the circumstances... but it's a bit of bad luck that the potentially available mazes are Halloween, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and The Walking Dead, 3 of the event's arguably most tired properties.

Staffing and lighting will also be interesting.

A fair point. Though I do have to wonder if Universal may shell out the cash to put Beetlejuice in, so they can use the IP when they can for the Halloween festivities.

In theory, you could perhaps market it as "Halloween at Universal Studios Hollywood" with Day/Night offerings for everyone. Allow costumes for kids and adults, give special opportunities to celebrate. It's something that was tested before, and if Universal were to change how Halloween is done, now would be the best time to do so.

Glass half full on USH's part - these former two IPs (especially Myers) are HUGE to the GP.

Looks like the “worst” case scenario is more likely. It would be nice if they could at least rebuild BJ as that could’ve been good.

Just asked about HHN 2021 - there is no confidence in a full event this year but there is confidence in an alternative offering that would be reminiscent of how Fright Fest operates at SFMM except much - much lighter in terms of atmosphere.

Doesn’t SFMM have a full event? If not, how do they operate?

In the past, Fright Feet operated under the element of that, you can buy access to the mazes by an upcharge fee. From then, you'd get a wristband that proves that you purchased access to the maze. It was for all the mazes, and didn't make each maze separate in payment.

That could've changed in the past, but that's what I recall.

What I was albeit proposing, is something similar to that. All the mazes would be offered later in the day (excluding Beetlejuice, if they can get that maze relocated from it's original location and to SS29), and that the mazes would be behind a 30-40 dollar paywall for unlimited access at the specific point.

Am I missing something here? I thought it was Halloween 3: Season of the Witch - the one Michael Myers-less entry in the franchise. How would that be tired?

I believe, purportedly, it still would’ve included Michael Myers in the maze, just tying him into that location.

Interesting concept. I wouldn’t mind seeing its execution. Almost like Bride over at UO: an original concept based on an IP.

Here’s another question
If amusement parks move smoothly throughout the summer, what would prevent HHN from having a full event but instead it’s 5 mazes?

probably money, not sure how much budget the HHN team has to build new stuff, since the only thing thats even really known to be a possibility is whats already there. Even assuming they could build an extra few mazes to get the count up to 5 or 6, it would probably be tricky to run in a manner that justifies the cost to run it with capacity locked at 15-20% of an already pretty low capacity event.

Aren't things already about to be at 25% capacity in April? I assume by September, capacity will allowed to be well over 50%, if not practically normal by that point considering vaccinations open up to everyone mid-April. Within 3 months, 28% of California has been vaccinated. That's 60%, if not more, of So Cal vaccinated by end of June. By that same metric, 90% by September, if we even get to that number -- as I suspect we'll probably cap out at 65-70% since some people don't want it. But even at that point, that's a great stance to reach heard immunity and quite frankly, let those people be responsible for whatever happens to them. I don't see the state justifying any capacity limitations at that rate.

I'm not aware of how many out-of-state tourists come to HHN, but I suspect it's a small percentage. But if the parks are strict with only California residents until end of June, I don't see how we won't be in a good position to have a full event with the possibility of a completely open border park by September. Unfortunately they do have to weigh the risk of possibily closing again, but I think at this rate it's a risk worth taking so people can have a full event. Fans will have been clamoring for this for 2 years by the point it opens, it will sell out every single night no matter the price. Some minimal changes are expected, I don't things could be 100% again after this, now that a lot of people will be suffering from PTSD or created new habits about hygiene. I also suspect an even more PC event, which has been getting more watered down year by year.

I'd love some virtual queues for Horror Nights. Everyone's biggest complaint is the lines. If that's still around come September, that's a change I assume many people will like for the better.

California waiting too long to give the all-clear by the time decisions have to be made. Even if things are more or less over in September (and they very well could be on our current trajectory), this state in particular has been prickly with theme park permissions. An event that's all about getting in your face and moving through tight spaces is going to set off alarm bells for them. Frankly, I'm not sure they have the go-ahead to do the haunted houses they have built.

Trust me, I'm sure they want to do an event. But they can't charge historic HHN prices for 5 mazes - they'd need at least 7. You only have space for 3 + TWDA on the upper lot with 2 on the lower. Involving the backlot is a huge sunk cost that requires a lot of advanced planning and mobilization that they are not likely to have.

Again, things could turn around. California has gotten more trigger happy with reopenings with the recall effort and mass vaccinations. But I wouldn't get your hopes up.

Also gotta keep in mind that while California is doing pretty good, the country as a whole isn't. I won't be surprised if this Orange Tier doesn't last, and we end up going back to Red or Purple in the future. Hopefully the vaccines will make a difference, but it's too early to tell.

If we get TCM, TWDA, Halloween 3, and then rebuild BJ, I'll be happy. Event or not.

I always hate the people problem because they're so huge that it's impossible to go on certain attractions in a timely manner (such as Peter Pan for example). If HHN comes around with restrictions still in place (such as California Residents only), the lines would be less bad and I'm okay with that.

Agree! This year capacity limits could make that decision for them, but moving forward I think the virtual queue process is the way to go.

I got an email to take a survey which was confidential, so I can't speak to the survey, but I can say what was in the email, which was says it is a survey about Halloween Horror Nights at Hollywood, so without giving any info, it definitely is something the creative team is thinking about.
