Horror movies/horror adjacent movies with anniversaries in 2024:

‪Saw (20th)‬
‪Alien (45th)‬
‪Gremlins (40th)‬
‪It Follows (10th)‬
‪The Mummy (25th)‬
‪Ghostbusters (40th)‬
‪The Sixth Sense (25th)‬
‪The Blair Witch Project (25th)‬
‪A Nightmare on Elm Street (40th)‬
‪The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (50th)‬

Gremlins has been on the rumor train for a few years now. Maybe this is the year.

I’d also love a Nightmare on Elm Street house again. 17 was my first year, so it would be very nostalgic.

Could Saw be in play since they had X in 2023 and XI in 2024?

Just had TCM in 2021, but it would be extremely weird to skip the 50th. Universal even acknowledged the 50th anniversary of Exorcist last year.

Gremlins feels like one of those IPs that is tough to sell Management on. The 40th anniversary could be enough, but they probably want the IP to have a resurgence in popularity before attempting to acquire it.

As much as I'd like to see Alien, it won't happen.

Maybe if Saw was a one-year thing at Six Flags.

Having it in the same year as FNAF (if it happens) would just feel SO right. Please please please universal make it happen

I doubt that the event that has recently done houses such as House of 1000 Corpses is all that concerned about Gremlins of all things not being popular enough.

Yeah, but with "odd" IPs like HO1C, Ghostbusters, and Beetlejuice, there has always been something relating to the IP that brings it into the spotlight again.

House of 1000 Corpses - 3 From Hell released September 2019
Ghostbusters - Afterlife announcement months prior/35th anniversary (Doesn't really count, but Afterlife ghosts in the house/Walkthrough with Afterlife cast)
Beetlejuice - The Musical exploded in popularity in late 2019 and early 2020

The 40th anniversary of Gremlins alone could be enough to bring it to the event, but it wouldn't shock me if Universal is waiting for something bigger to happen.

Annual reminder that anniversaries don't mean much, if anything, in IP selection.

They do tend to mean that the rights can be easier to get a hold of. If Universal is already interested in them, of course.

Secrets of the Mogwai was very much a kid/teen-centric show with a ten-year-old protagonist. Don’t count on its existence as something that would work for HHN.

I'm once again subjecting myself to the horrors of the HHN Facebook group and the mod is once again saying the HHN budget is slashed due to Epic and all the houses last year were Universal IPs as proof.

Welp, that's your update there's no reason to look everyone it's terrible.

That group is filed with the absolute worst types of theme park fans. And people say the UOAP group is bad lol

As much as I would LOVE to see Gremlins, I'm tired of convincing myself it's going to come every year. It's not coming LOL

Maybe? Psycho celebrated its 60th and there wasn't a peep about it at HHN.

Basically, anniversaries don't move the compass to whether a property is likely or not.

Totally agreed. I'm just saying that, rights holders do tend to use anniversaries as a time to let the reigns loose on licensing.

Just an example (not saying that it's happening)...

Universal may have been speaking with Warner about doing something with Gremlins for the last few years.
Warner likely could have told them to hold off and wait because they're planning a big 40th anniversary push with new physical releases, new toys, etc.
I'm just saying that companies do plan big marketing pushes around anniversaries to release product. Heck, Disney creates every little anniversary it can think of to create campaigns (This is the 75th anniversary of when Walt first doodled "It's a Small World", let's decorate the castle.)

Edit: Secondary point. We got the Hellbilly Deluxe Scarezone because it was the 20th anniversary of that album. Sure, Universal was interested in doing it, but that's ultimately why we ended up with it that year.

Universal got to do Hellbilly Deluxe because they paid for the rights. Licensing isn’t altruistic.

I'm not saying that they got it for free. Just that the label likely wanted to do it that year because of the anniversary.

Again, I'm not saying that we will get any properties just because they have an anniversary this year. But I don't think that we should discount anniversaries as meaning nothing. At least this early into spec season.

Well, if 8/30 is opening night, we are less than 8 months away!

Here's hoping we get another lagoon show.

An IP anniversary is a bullet for a partnership pitch and marketing copy. That's it.

I'm finally caught up, phew. This is shaping up to be an interesting year, and I really hope they focus on scare zones this year. I think a monster zone is long overdue, and I could definitely see Creature being the monster house this year. Blumhouse's partnership with Universal, in tandem with the Hollywood FNAF exhibit, makes FNAF seem extremely possible. I feel like we will get another 4 IP/6 Original split though.

This isn’t exactly HHN 33 related, but on the UOAP benefits page they updated the fine print of the Premier pass benefit - starting in 2025 it will require an advance online reservation. I wonder if this our first sign of an HHN ticketing overhaul.

One (1) free night admission to Halloween Horror Nights (on select nights only)^. Advance online reservations are required starting with the 2025 event. Reservation is subject to event capacity. One (1) reservation per valid Premier Annual Pass.
