I say this as someone who believes that Marathon of Mayhem is the best show produced for HHN and loved the short run of Ghoulish.

agree with what everyone is saying about ATMOSHERE. Its turned "poppy" for the lack of a better term. Too much dance club not enough haunted house.

Im hoping that the dark universe is such a gigantic success that it influences hhn to do something different.
I hope if dark universe gets such huge gigantic praise , that maybe hhn brings back the creepy atmosphere. ( I'm not talking about monsters or anything gothic horror related, or anything like dark universe visually, just more creepy atmosphere and music )

It's...interesting seeing this conversation. Go back to those HHN29 threads and people are talking about how the event feels less scary, how it feels like it's all comedy, campy, or even "kiddy" IP like Klowns, Ghostbusters, Stranger Things. Talking about how much of a whiff houses and zones like Depths and Anarcade were. I don't even necessarily agree with any of those opinions myself, but I think there definitely is an extent to where a bit of this conversation is coming from nostalgia for an event where you were a beginner and didn't have as much to compare to.

I think years like 31 have had much stronger thematic identities, and 28 had much stronger houses and zones than 29; but that's just my personal taste. I definitely don't think anything has been lost in the time since 2019, the event felt equally sanitized then too frankly. It's not a bad thing per se, it's just what HHN is nowadays.

In the end, while last year was definitively off-beat and all over the place in terms of quality and theming, I think it's a little silly to lament the loss of an event that is largely the exact same as we have now. I firmly believe guests walking into 33 as their first HHN will have the same longing for it in five years time, and the loop will continue.

I think you have a good point - but I assure you 29 instantly became my favorite event in 2019, and it has remained that way since. 32 came very close, but it didn't quite get there.

(I've always thought the "kiddy/campy" complaints were stupid ANY time they've been made. Particularly for a year that featured House of 1000 Corpses)

29 was the beginning of the change lol, we didnt know how good we had it lol.
but those opinions weren't wrong, about Ghostbusters, stranger things and klowns, we just didn't know that this atmosphere was going to remain. the weekend definitely added a lot more to that.

HNN has been very quiet, i have a sneaky suspicion we get a new spec map around St. Patty's Day.
Can also see a potential house announcement for the end of the month, based on their track record of late.

It’s hard for them to do a new map when there hasn’t been a lot of new rumors.

Yeah, I'm kinda getting the vibe that there may be fewer spec maps this year

The music of HHN 28 and HHN 29 was absolutely my favorite. The horror synth made me feel like I was actually in an 80s horror movie. And…yeah…Marathon of Mayhem was incredible!

29 was my first and only ever HHN and I was spoilt! I’m back this year and I feel like the music is not gonna hit the same.

Since we’re speculating on the park sound for this year, I don’t think the current music trend will change anytime soon. I assume the instrumental rock sounds are all cheaper to license, since they’ve been using some of the same artists since 2021.

My local haunt has been using Midnight Syndicate and Nox Arcana for about 20 years now, so I don’t mind that sort of spooky gothic vibe.

But, in my opinion, nothing will top the horror synth years where we got artists like Daniel Deluxe and Perturbator.

I was talking about this with someone else and my friend said that maybe music soundtracks are just too boring for the current hhn. maybe that's the case in that what I call eerie atmosphere is just considered boring by now. maybe too slow or something. too depressing?
maybe the atmosphere for hhn needs to be high energy and high intensity to match up with the energy of the ips and the scarezones now.

I'm not being sarcastic either, but imagine that they bring back midnight syndicate and then people started to complain about it.
or how midnight syndicate wouldn't fit with Megan or five nights at Freddy's or the weekend or fallout and stuff,
I can see what my friend was trying to say. I can see that point.

but then instead of techno why couldn't they just use the movie soundtracks of the properties used in those houses more often? ( but then we go back to what my friend said about the soundtracks being boring)

Yeah, based on the cookie cutter metal and techno tracks they have been using, they definitely seem to want a consistent uptempo party atmosphere now.

The dark and moody songs might be too slow for them. I just wish they would mix it up and maybe add a handful of the spooky tracks for those of us who appreciate it.

I’m going to guess that licensing the movie soundtracks for general park sound just isn’t as cost effective as pulling prefabricated tracks out of a Universal Music Group catalog.

I can’t complain too hard because it works well enough right now. I just know what I like and I want to be catered to lol.

the kids need constant stimulation nowadays, I think maybe the music represents that. Its slow burn vs jump scares in music form. I dont know, just thinking outloud here.

I never experienced the slower, spookier music, so I have no input on that, but I will say the upbeat stuff is great to keep you speed-walking so you can squeeze one more house run in before closing even if your feet are killing you :') like trying to stay pumped at the gym lol

i never really thought about the licensing, that's a good point. and maybe stuff like midnight syndicate could be seen as outdated and played out by now. I understand that the event evolves which makes me wonder:

and I'm surprised they haven't used any horror creepy hip hop beats for the event yet. there's a lot of instrumental horror style beats that the park could use. ( I say hip hop because metal has already been used so much, and pop music isn't known for being creepy)
I like synth wave, but I think I would be ready for something different,
I've always enjoyed when people take the theme of Halloween or nightmare on elm Street and make it a hip hop remix, I do really enjoy horror songs remixed.

maybe something like this could be used to move from the techno stuff. still creepy, but more upbeat, it sounds like something that Jack the clown could have for a queue line or for a scarezone:
