Saw Shelby Oaks and Black Phone 2 this weekend.
Shelby Oaks was okay. Tries to do too much. Can't decide what it wants to be and by the time it does, the movie is over without much more to say for itself. It's all the good parts of other good horror movies without much of the work put into what made those things good: Hellhouse LLC, Grave Encounters, Blair Witch, Rosemary's Baby, etc.
It gets bonus points for being Stuckmann's directorial debut and you can see Flanagan's influence throughout but gets a negative for not being as good as any of those things that i just mentioned; And at it's worst, it goes into serious Bye Bye Man territory, which definitely isn't a compliment.
7/10
Black Phone 2 simply wasn't as good as the first and criminally wastes Hawke's return as the Grabber. Doesn't give him enough time or effort in due explanation, the plot contrivances were thick, the script was cringey, and Derrickson's direction has been better elsewhere, though there were some standout moments here and there.
I want to say 5/10 for just existing but it gets a 6/10 for some good directing and the actors literally carrying this awful script.
Both were okay. I'd watch SO again. I don't think i'd watch BP2 again.
