Saw Shelby Oaks and Black Phone 2 this weekend.

Shelby Oaks was okay. Tries to do too much. Can't decide what it wants to be and by the time it does, the movie is over without much more to say for itself. It's all the good parts of other good horror movies without much of the work put into what made those things good: Hellhouse LLC, Grave Encounters, Blair Witch, Rosemary's Baby, etc.

It gets bonus points for being Stuckmann's directorial debut and you can see Flanagan's influence throughout but gets a negative for not being as good as any of those things that i just mentioned; And at it's worst, it goes into serious Bye Bye Man territory, which definitely isn't a compliment.

7/10

Black Phone 2 simply wasn't as good as the first and criminally wastes Hawke's return as the Grabber. Doesn't give him enough time or effort in due explanation, the plot contrivances were thick, the script was cringey, and Derrickson's direction has been better elsewhere, though there were some standout moments here and there.

I want to say 5/10 for just existing but it gets a 6/10 for some good directing and the actors literally carrying this awful script.

Both were okay. I'd watch SO again. I don't think i'd watch BP2 again.

I enjoyed Shelby Oaks (7.5/10) just a bit more than Him (7/10), Black Phone 2 (6/10), Dream Eater (4/10), Strangers 2 (2/10), and Good Boy (7.2/10).

For 2025, my top 3 horror movies so far were (no particular order) Companion, Bring Her Back, and Weapons. Sinners gets a close 4th.

This is a great list, though I think I'd swap Companion and Sinners positions. They're all so close it's down to taste though.

My tops this year are definitely Sinners and Long Walk.
I'd then say Monkey, Weapons, Together, Bring Her Back, 28 Years Later, VHS Halloween, Clown in a Cornfield, and Final Destination Bloodlines - most likely in that exact order for a top 10 so far.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought Black Phone 2 was...meh

Reviews I saw before it made it sound pretty good but...especially compared to the OG film. I don't think it holds a candle

Shelby oaks is really bizarre in that it has some of the negatives that Chris stuckman complained about constantly for a whole decade and also on how people keep complaining about how much ai borrows and steals from other sources when writing something, but Shelby oaks almost feels like an ai project with all the homages and nods.

is a really bizarre situation. I really really wanted to root so strongly for Chris, but I can't believe this is what he was working on for 10 years ( or however long it was)

I dont understand how black phone 2 exists the way it does. not only is the plot kinda iffy but the way he returns is very iffy.
I didn't hate it but I didn't need it either. is not as cool or creative as nightmare on elm street.
only the ending was cool.

I haven’t seen the film, but I will say there is a universe of difference between generative AI/LLMs and a creator intentionally using homages and nods.

I just didn't expect his movie to be like that. some shots are straight from other movies. felt much more than nods but just full copying some other movies.

Gregg Bishop (@bishopgregg) on Threads

Hi everyone, Wondering if you could help me find two filming locations around Georgia, ideally near Cobb County. See attached storyboards for the vibe. 1. A hill or elevated area overlooking a middle to upper class suburban neighborhood that faces east for a sunrise shot. 2. A suburban street...
www.threads.com www.threads.com
I am so excited! Ahhhhhh!!!!
Going to try my best to get the male witch part! going to start small first I gave the director some filming locations in Georgia! Hoping this comes to HHN 2027 or 2028!
Maybe I’ll star in Jack o 2, or The The jester 3 next!

Edit: here’s what I’m Hoping to star in:

Run Sweetheart Run 2
By Blumhouse

Trick r Treat 2

Creeping Death sequel

And Maybe other stuff :)

What we ended up watching for our Halloween marathon after our Wheel of Wickedness picked for us:

Ick (2024) - Super fun, over the top, relentless Joseph Kahn (Detention) helmed horror comedy starring Brandon Routh as the local science teacher who peaked in 2000s high school who may or may not be the papa of one of his students in a town that is infested with parasitic plant life called the ICK that citizens just casually ignore until it begins moving and consuming. I dug it, won't be for everyone but it's a blast.

Frailty (2001) - Bill Paxton's directorial debut is a tremendously underrated film that ratchets up the tension and terror through his own deliciously demented performance as a father of two boys who becomes a hand for God in the mission to destroy 'demons'. Great thriller type vibes that you could interpret in a multitude of ways, highly recommended if you've never heard of it.

Handsome Guys (2024) - A Korean remake of Tucker & Dale vs. Evil that not only does a great job remaking the original film and bringing just as many laughs but also puts its own supernatural Korean twist on the story. One half faithful retelling of the beloved horror comedy and one half a fun blast of Sam Raimi style battling with a demonic goat! It's hard to find but I'd definitely check it out (I signed up for a free trial to a Korean streaming site to watch it)!

Wolf Man (2025) - Finally catching up to this one and I honestly don't know why this one got as much hate as it did. It feels like more people wanted this to be a 'werewolf' movie but it's not, it's a 'Wolf Man' movie and they're different things. It wasn't my favorite of the year and it didn't reach the heights of the modernized Invisible Man but there's some great sequences here and some really fun ideas. Acting was great, score was thrilling, some grueling effects, yeah, I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would given the harsh reception to it.

FRAILTY is excellent.

Can't co-sign the WOLF MAN recommendation, though!

I love FRAILTY , the main theme was used for the Edgar Allan Poe haunted house in hhn. such an amazing theme. would be playing really loud as Edgar Allan Poe's voice was talking in the speakers.
one of my favorite memories

I never knew that people liked the movie until the end but when the end is revealed, seems like a lot of people hate it from the reviews I saw. a bunch of reviews kept saying that the ending ruins it.

I feel the opposite. it made it much better. much stronger

besides Frailty is partially based on a true story.
( The film draws heavily from the story of Joseph Kallinger, who committed horrific acts of violence and murder with his 13-year-old son. he pleaded insanity, stating that he believed God had commanded him to do it)

And again, I'll probably end up giving it like a 2.5 on Letterboxd. I didn't LOVE it or anything but far from something I would loudly echo hate about.

Wolf Man is trying something and it has good scenes, it's just also a little boring and dumb. The "struggling with masculinity" stuff just had no credibility. I've seen worse movies. And I actually kind of like the makeup.

Re: Frailty,

The thing that makes the movie so scary is the idea of your dad losing his mind when you're a defenseless child and forcing you to damn your soul by making you do horrible things. I don't like that the ending reveals that he was totes in the right about everything because it undercuts the horror of the situation.

yeah a lot of people agree with your feelings of frailty. I see it a lot.

but for me, I prefer the movie ending because if he was going crazy, that's just the same as real life. it would just be like a real world case.
but for me the paranormal stuff In the ending made it more scary. more interesting, it went more fantastical which I prefer

it's like the end of The Sixth sense. that movie could have also ended with the boy imagining everything. but it's more interesting and scary when it's real

The thing that I love about Frailty is that you could interpret it however you want. Do things exist? Maybe. Do they not exist? Maybe. If they exist do they exist as presented? Whose to say? It's a film so you take things as presented but you're free to interpret them as you please.

Anyway, just caught up with the newest (and supposed last) entry into the Hell House LLC franchise and, man, I'm disappointed.

Hell House LLC. is a great independent found footage horror that brings the goods in terms of atmosphere and scares on a no string budget. The second and third films act as sequels that, while featuring diminishing returns, are a lot of fun and really do good jobs at fleshing out the lore of the location while also bringing the story to a wild but final conclusion. Then we get to Origins and the Carmichael Manor, which, while being better in terms of technicality and bringing more of those horror found footage frights, introduces more and more lore and back story which is, acceptable, I guess, given how good the film is.

Well, Hell House LLC: Lineage delves into more and more and more lore and backstory and world building yet the meat of the film is shockingly disappointing. The decision to move into a narrative film instead of found footage not only doesn't turn out well, it really just puts a bright spotlight on Cognetti's short comings as a filmmaker. Which feels mean to say because kudos to him for turning a simple idea into a really well loved franchise but this movie feels like a step way too far. Positioning this as the last of the saga while introducing a slew of new twists, turns, characters and even an entirely new supernaturally selected location is just too far gone.
