Yes, the movie does have to be compelling, but even The Good Dinosaur made most of it's money in December through to January. It was also the first November under-performer for Disney since Princess and the Frog back in 2009.

Like was said, we don't even have a teaser for Moana, but i'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt until then. As i've stated before, I think having Lin-Manuel Miranda writing the music is a big promotional usage to them. All they need to do is say "With music from the creator of Hamilton" and it'll catch people's attention.

Nah, I disagree. Hamilton indeed was huge but at the same time they didn't advertise Frozen with music by the people who did Wicked and Book of Mormon..comes off tacky and also I don't think the investors and producers of Hamiltion would be okay with that as the top 3 work for Universal.

And you think others wouldn't be lined up to invest if Universal wanted to balk at it? The show was created by Miranda and is sold out a year in advance. If he wants to allow Disney to use the name of his show, then it will happen.

It might not happen or even be something they're thinking of, but it's an ace they can pull.

What's the deal with animation studios trying to be 'hip' or relevant?
The Angry Birds Movie, Fruit Ninja, Emojis, and now Trolls.
I'm pretty sure most teenagers find the whole whip and nae nae thing to be pretty moronic.

You weren't alive last year when all teens were doing the Whip/Nae Nae apparently. I have two high school siblings and them and their friends were doing it for months last year.

Young people in general (not just teens, young adults too - which includes myself) like to learn those dances so they can show off. That's really the only reason.

My entire class found that Troll trailer to be just stupid.

Remember you may find it stupid but these films are geared for those ten and under who will be like papa, mama I want to go see that. And they will take them and deal as they love their kids despite how stupid they may think it is or looks. I.E. My mom when she took me to see the power ranger movie as a kid with Ivan Ooze.

I find Trolls to look fairly stupid/juvenile too. But let's not pretend it's trying to be anything more. Hell, Angry Birds made almost $40M this past weekend and most reviews pretty much say it sucks.

Animation is aimed at 12 and under the majority of the time unless nostalgia factors in. Disney has been releasing "Smarter" animation of late. I hesitate to say the same about Illumination yet as most has just been fluffy animation so far... we'll see with Pets.

The smartest non-Disney mainstream animated movies imo are The Lego Movie, HTTYD and Shrek. Most studios are still just releasing crap that young kids will like and it'll inevitably make money.

I was very surprised when I heard how well Angry Birds did.
Which is sad, because The Nice Guys looked awesome and it only did 10 Million.

Being into animation, it's actually not that surprising. It's bright, colorful, simple and heavily marketed so people definitely know it exists. Those kind of films can make money, even though they gotta' go the route of flash over substance.

Question is will they be able to keep the momentum to reach $500+, since that's probably what they need before they start making a profit. It's no secret Rovio is betting the farm with this, it HAS to be a mega hit with the money they put into producing/marketing.

I meant as in the fact that Angry Birds isn't as popular as it was back a few years ago.
Maybe if it was a movie based of MineCraft (disgusting), I can see them doing well.

Minecraft doesn't have much of a story to it though. Angry Birds always had the Pig/Bird thing which, while very little, provides just enough that they can make a fun kids movie. Minecraft would have to go The Lego movie route and create it's own story.

Its not something that I am seeing in theatres..but it is looking better with each trailer.

I am surprised though, wouldn't they also start marketing Despicable Me 3 with SLoP or are they just going to wait for Sing to start that campaign?

I still think this movie looks pretty bad, but if it makes money I wouldn't be opposed to an AA show of it somewhere in the parks.

To me, the direction and plot just seem to be all over the place. The gags don't appear to be things children would recognize and the script and tone skew too young for adults in other areas.
