Not part of the sale. MGM only owns the MGM library going back about 30 years. WB owns everything prior - including Oz.

I say wait for the WB piecemeal sale that is going to happen...Comcast already owns partial rights to the Addams Family (the art style used in the MGM film was from the comics which Universal acquired; they have to MGM due to too many films and MGM owning the classic theme song) and the other IPs aren’t real money makers.

Comcast and Sony used to own MGM back in 2004 as a reminder and it didn’t have that great of a value outside the television area.

Warners actually owns the rights to the 1939 Wizard of Oz film. MGM sold their pre May 1986 catalogue to Turner back in the day. How else would they have made Tom and Jerry and the Wizard of Oz?

I'm not sure if you realize, but AT&T bought Warner to compete in the streaming sphere. Even with HBO Max having a botched launch and Warner/HBO Max botching this whole Day and Date release thing simply by not communicating, Kilar will simply get fired. They aren't selling off, they'll put someone in there who knows what they're actually doing.

And Even if they DID sell of, Comcast isn't getting the pieces. Apple needs a back catalog and WB has probably the most diverse back catalog out there. Apple could buy them up and it would be like grabbing a $5 bill out of their pocket. Comcast is in debt. Do you REALLY think Comcast would be in the drivers seat in that situation?

while content is king, there has to be value of content. Everyone has stated whenever a media company comes up Apple will buy for streaming, yet they never do. They always bail pretty early same with Amazon with their deep pockets.

Secondly, Warner has something Comcast wants which is their Japanese Operations which would grant them character rights and distribution to things they use at USJ for Universal cool and up their animation capabilities outside of Dreamworks and Illumination.

lastly the debt argument...if Comcast was worried about debt they wouldn’t even consider buying MGM. However, MGM television and reality production is somewhat valuable.

Apple would lock everything away purely for streaming (kind of like Disney's done), while I suspect Comcast would still allow for physical media 4K releases of some of the major titles MGM controls. And that's not even taking into account how much I'd hate it if the Bond franchise going forward was a streaming -- rather than big screen -- event.

As far as theme park applications, obviously Universal could probably do something interesting with 007. Even though they just opened Bourne, a lavish James Bond stunt spectacular (on a large, epic scale) could be incredible...

The Bond and Lord of the Rings rights aren't nearly as straightforward as "buy MGM and we'll own them all to do whatever we want!" Those two specifically are the most appealing for developing as theme park assets, but their ownership is more complicated than the studio that distributes them.

Honestly, I think the main goal would be to nab the smaller studios (like Orion for instance, whom is owned by MGM currently).

Albeit--in a similar way to the DWA deal, whoever would get it would also get some backend content that may prove rather useful down the road.

The way the world is now, the streaming rights of content are going to outweigh any kind of theme park aspects a great deal. At some point, these streaming services are going to start cannibalizing each other. All the cord cutters are going to realize that they are paying as much for streaming services as they were for cable and start dropping the ones they don't watch/don't have enough content.
