I’ll sum up my frustration with this feels like for stock holders and not fans

If fans don’t want details, then I guess I’m just a different type of fan

But this is a huge project

To announce it with nothing ja like announcing a video game 6 years before to comes out to draw investment and keep stocks high over announcing hey this is the new Tomorrowland here are some pictures of what we want to do and yes the people mover is coming back

It’s literally fan service tho. Disney is saying “we know the fans have been asking for a refresh of Tomorrowland so today we want to announce that we are working on that.” They didn’t release details because they probably don’t have anything locked in at this time.

I really don’t expect Autopia or the Subs to go anywhere any time soon. The monorail is a major impediment to that kind of work.

Maybe it’s just me and I can be wrong (as seen by how HHN 2026 went for me), but I wonder if we shouldn’t count Autopia lucky for the moment.

My gut makes me wonder if DL Tomorrowland was a *last minute* element, like how it was for Figment, and in the weeks/months ahead leaning to Early 2027, Autopias future becomes clear really quickly.

Similar thing kind of happened with HKDL Tomorrowland, where they quietly as far as I recall closed their Autopia without fanfare or love. Letting it sit abandoned before being torn down and site prepped.

They’re gonna have to address that area regardless especially if the Peoplemover is going to be tackled. And with Eastern Gateway likely causing the monorail to go down for a bit, I can see a retrack happening to the monorail to prepare both that and the area around Autopia/Subs for the future.

Maybe I’m wrong, wouldn’t be the first; but I think DL Tomorrowland likely is early enough right now (like Figment) where they’re going to have to have heavy discussions on how to quickly move.

Also to add one more element, depending on the scale it makes me wonder just how much would they even have ready by DL75. Unless they’re gonna go straight to plaid on construction speed—I think this is likely aiming for 2032 for the finish line. Would love to be wrong but I wonder what their ETA is.

FWIW, people over on WDWMagic were throwing out timelines of new TL being done for 2030 followed by Avatar in 2031 to coincide with the final film. Then 2032 beyond would be anything DLForward related.

I actually hope this isn't true because I want them to go full scortched-earth on TL. Tear EVERYTHING down and start over!

At first I was hyped but the fact they’re emphasizing this as TL “reimagined” made me become a realist and to DL that’s probably just removing the walls in front of the entrance and calling it a day.

I think people have to step back and realize that we’re in a different age of the Disney Parks. They are being far more ambitious than the Chapek era.

This project brings up a lot of questions:
  • What happens to Star Tours? Does it coincide with an update to DHS (post Monsters Inc)
  • Does Buzz get the MK style refurb?

While it is early to announce without details or concept art, it seems like this is being rushed forward and I’m sure they have dozens of thought out plans by now.

My two cents: I think Autopia is done.

The reason they've probably been so cagey about talking about its upcoming electrification requirement is because they didn't want to market something they knew might not be coming, but they still had a legal requirement to communicate to the state and the media that they would update the attraction in the event that their Tomorrowland plans didn't get approved.

If they're pursuing an aggressive timeline, then I'm expecting the Autopia closure to be the obligatory post-D23 'dropped' shoe.

This is a very important note that I think may get glossed over. Announcing this, and more importantly, actually showing your work, is a great way for Mazloum and D'Amaro to earn some early goodwill with the fans in this new era. I think them both coming from parks positions helps a lot, too.

Interesting take! I guess we will know soon. This update has been talked about for years, and I think the last thing I heard was they were going to phase out the gas engines by the end of this year. Closing the ride entirely would certainly be one way for them to hit that zero emissions goal.

I still wonder about how complicated that corner of the park is though. Everything is really layered and intertwined. I guess we'll see.

Very rough /initial thoughts ideas:
  • Space Mountain gets the Tokyo treatment (not a complete clone, but similar ideas)
  • Space Mountain becomes the new weenie of TL by being placed at the old Carousel of Progress location (will allow them to keep the attraction up while initial construction/demo happens)
  • I think SM is “relocated” to help crowd flow as well with a new TL/Main Street bypass that become permanent and nicer to experience
  • Space 220 style restaurant and bar
  • Figment introduced to DL?

Fantasyland expansion will be phase 2 of whatever space isn’t used at Tomorrowland. Frozen?

I just can’t see them doing this, the only reason they did that in Tokyo was because OLC was willing to pay for it. I also think DL has the capacity to be “okay” with SM being down for a long time.

Here’s a fun fact: From the time it took from the original space mountain to open to the time it closed for the rebuild, by the time Tomorrowland will likely close for the refresh, it will have been *almost* the same amount of time from the time the new version opened until whatever time TL closes! (2029/30?)

SM 1.0 (1977-2003) [26 years]

SM 2.0 (2005-2029(?)) [24 years]

Just wanted to bring that up to make you feel old and depressed but also to emphasize that the timing would line up. What I want to see from TL is (In order of priority)…

Amiable MUST. No exceptions
1) People Mover (DUH)
2) Relocate Astro Orbiter/Rocket Jets back up top

High priority but not as important
3) Give Space Mountain the Tokyo treatment

If you can do it great, if not, it’s fine.
4) Retheme it if you just, but keep Buzz. It needs an update.
5) Put in Space 220. It’s a great restaurant!

Everything else…do what you want. Surprise us.

Genuine question about space 220, isn’t it actually run by a 3rd party? Not sure if DL has ever had any arrangements like that before within the actual parks. And I’m sure if they tried to open something similar without the 3rd party involvement legal issues would arise.

doesn’t have to be an exact copy or name, just the general idea of having a space themed restaurant or bar

I have to imagine we will get DL’s version of Geo 82 somewhere… that’s money being left off the table

They still haven't done it to the original Space Mountain! It's more than 50 years old! And, as you said, it took a big check from OLC just to get them to redo the 40-year-old version of Space Mountain. I could see Disneyland's Space Mountain getting some updated queue videos or perhaps a new, more prominent entrance. But otherwise ... I'd be really surprised if a big overhaul is on the table.
