Six Flags Magic Mountain permanently closes Superman coaster

The Lex Luther: Drop of Doom attached to the coaster tower will remain in operation.
www.ocregister.com www.ocregister.com

Superman: Escape from Krypton has now officially closed forever. They will however be keeping Lex Luthor operational.

There are no new plans for a new Superman attraction at this time either.

“It’s too early to disclose what we’re going to do with the actual track, cars, queue, building structure and everything else that comes with the attraction,” Harris said. “That’s yet to be determined, but we’re working through what that potentially could look like for the future.”

Superman: Escape from Krypton is not closing to make room for the new first-of-its-kind coaster coming to Magic Mountain in 2026, according to Harris.

Superman was a one trick pony overrated coaster to begin with & was plagued with issues from day one. So it's loss is no big deal.

If Drop of Doom truly is "safe", then that's even better because it's a great drop tower. (Just wish they'd fully enclose everything after the initial queue entrance building. Give it the "Dr Doom's FearFall" treatment. No excuse for the themed queue to end after the first building.

My other annoyance is that Luthor is located outside/away from DC Universe/Metropolis. The generic Boardwalk midway theme of Crazanity makes it even worse & noticeable.

As for Samurai Summit, they better not ditch the Asian theme on the mountain. Especially with Tatsu right there (sponsored by Nickelodeon)

Honestly, i would love for Goldrusher to get an Asian overhaul since it is located at the base of Samurai Summit & treks through the mountain.

I'd like the former restaurant renovated & open. Table service would be great since Full Throttle Sports Bar is the ONLY one in the park. But quick-service with indoor seating like Hogsmeade/Food Etc would be good too.

iconic sky tower... enough said.

The building next to the sky tower was our breakroom (after we lost ours to WCR). Beneath it obviously is the Willoughby's house location (which stays up year round, minus the facade). There is a former quick-service counter there (closed YEARS ago) & it'd be great to bring back ChopSix (aka-NOT Panda) for this location.

As for the Superman area itself, too soon to figure that out due to the new coaster incoming.

Flat rides are a must park wide... I've played enough RCT growing up that my brain automatically fills the empty spaces lol

While I am a little disappointed about Superman being closed for good, there are far worse rides to close. It’s not surprising considering all the issues they had, but it would be nice if they actually reached out to S&S to rework the launch system. I know that’s easier said than done, but that would be preferable than just letting an iconic ride just sit there, rotting away.

Well, at least Lex Luthor is safe. It would be a travesty to close that! The park needs a good drop tower. I’m glad we have the world’s tallest drop tower for now.

I only cared for Superman once it started going backwards so I could see the drop, so not much of a loss for me, but definitely a major blow to the iconography of the park. It would be like Disneyland getting rid of the Matterhorn or Knotts getting rid of...well, Supreme Scream.

I get that the ride didn't live up to the hype, but I did still really enjoy it. Sad to see it go, but not very surprised.

What's more surprising to me is that they can't seem to find a way to just update the launch system. That ride opened in the 90s, and the launch tech has come such a long ways since then.

While I'd imagine a retrofit would also mean new cars, it still seems like a relatively small expense compared to building an entire new coaster, especially when the track is already there. I'd want to see a re-imagined launch, with freely rotating seats, like on a half-pipe.

Found the concept video that Six Flags sent out in 2018 regarding turning Superman into a full circuit ride

Here after learning about it on social media. I didn't think this would happen and I'm kind of sad about it despite being too afraid to go on it in the past. Never got to ride it and from what I know, it was the last or only one of its kind when it came to coasters like that.
Galactus said:
Glad to hear other people talking about it. I rode it for the second time (the first time I don't remember much about the ride good or bad) in 2018 and remember laughing my head off for 90% of the ride and thinking that this was going straight into my top 10 coasters until that last raven turn and hitting my head so hard against the back of the seat that I had a headache the rest of the day. When I see people talk about how X2 and Eejainaika (which wasn't as bad as X2 roughness wise, but I also had my body very braced) are top 10 or 5 coasters, I always wonder if I'm missing something or if they're just tougher (or more hard headed) than me

Jesus christ, makes me glad I didn't go on it back on my last visit in 2021. Probably dodged a bullet if the ride is that dodgy now.

What a shame. They had just switched the red car around to go forwards too.
