Maybe this should've just been a solid indoor roller coaster set inside the temple.

Butttt I do like the kinetic energy of the carts zipping past. But, like Mario Kart and Yoshi, I feel like a superior ride is lost here somewhere.

Hopefully with the next SNW attraction, Nintendo allows Universal to make just a really solid ride that lacks a huge marketing gimmick (AR, jumping ride vehicles). And is just more about a really good experience.

Are we sure Uni didn't pitch these ideas to Nintendo?

Nintendo definitely had a big say. If they didn’t like it, they wouldn’t approve. They wanted rides that appealed to as many ages as possible. There was other concepts that were told “No”.

There are definitely some costs when giving the IP creators total creative control, but then again, they supposedly know their characters best.

From my understanding, the original concept for Mario Kart was faster, and Nintendo pulled it back because they felt it was too much for younger kids.

Unless I'm mistaken, I've heard augmented reality was still being planned even when the attraction was intended to be faster, and there was also concerns of potential motion sickness when utilizing the technology at that speed.

I still don’t get why either party were so desperate to make Mario Kart an AR attraction.

Anyway, can’t wait to see the waterfall effect working in Orlando. Gonna really make the skyline pop.

Agreed. It’s an operations suck as it is, and not that effective for the guest.

Different choices should have been made.

They wanted interaction without relying solely on screens, while not being too thrilling where young kids can still ride.

It’s a lot easier playing Monday Morning QB.

totally, but I think the finished product is not very good. I do t know how to satisfy all those requirements and still make a great attraction … which is why I’m not getting paid to do so. I’ve been to SNW in Hollywood and Osaka — the vibe of the lands rules, but the attractions (imo) are just ok.

Oh I was mostly speaking on the direction, not the end result.

The biggest issue with the AR is that it's going to age very quickly and become dated - just like all tech gimmicks that are put into theme park attractions.

These attractions need to be built with the intent to impress guests in 20-30 years, not just impress at the initial opening date.

Luckily, even though it would probably be very expensive, they could upgrade this attraction in the future. I could see this ride, when the technology progresses enough, potentially using AR glasses that are about the size of a regular pair of 3D glasses, like the ones currently being developed by Meta.

Idk if anyone else has had this experience but I think the USJ version is noticeably more shaky and blurry, and I wonder if the same will be true down the line for the American versions.

I guess I was referring to the "gimmicks" more than anything. Who pitched the AR in the first place?

Again, just make a Mario fantasy land dark ride. I’m not even asking for a scoop, just a really well done grand adventure.

I feel like the ride in its current state is missing that “AH-HA”, click moment. It’s more like a “Huh, this is really interesting…hmmmmmmm”

The ride feels like trying to fit a square into a circle. Just seems like the design teams really overthought this attraction (same goes for DK). They just haaaaaad to have that interactivity.

But that’s not that ride they wanted. It’s the ride you wanted. You’re more than welcome to not like the end result but it doesn’t make it wrong.

I was watching the latest Bioreconstruct aerial video for Epic Universe and noticed something weird in regards to DK. One of the main complaints I've seen about USJ's version is that the real track is very visible on the second main drop, it's just nothing until you ramp up a fallen pillar. Meanwhile at Epic Universe there's fake track from the valley and there's no fallen pillar? Gotta wonder what happened here. It doesn't seem to be a space constraint.
