Saw it today. Wanted to love it but really didn't.
It's not too confusing, it's just a little boring. I didn't even find the big set pieces that compelling.

I also found the audio awful, could just be the theater I was in, The musical accompaniment was so loud that all the dialogue came across as mumbled, I needed subtitles.

That said - first time I've seen a new movie at the Theater since March - how I have missed it!!!

Did you watch it in IMAX? Had a friend that did and had the same complaint.

Subtitles would've helped a ton for my old man ears.

I did yeah.

I think it's actually just the way it was filmed. I don't have old man ears (!!!) but it was so mumbled that I ended up missing parts of conversations.

A friend of mine saw it (shocked he went to a theatre) and said he had no clue what the f was going on, and not in a fun way. Too confusing and convoluted it sounds. Not the fun action thrilling film he hoped his return to the theatre film would be. He said since I see so many films I obviously need to see it cause its Nolan, but he genuinely isn't recommending it overall to others it seems. Disappointed by the reviews thus far.

I'd say you can absolutely wait for Streaming. I didn't see anything I felt I needed to see up on a big screen.

The fun element is definitely missing, it's too busy trying to be clever.

That’s the vibe I’m getting from everyone. Bummer, I’ll definitely see it one day though.

In terms of being confusing and convoluted, I think it compares a lot to Dunkirk. During the first watch I didn't grasp the way that Nolan presented the non-linear storyline of that film, but by the end it makes sense. I had that same confusion during the first hour of Tenet, but once it made sense I totally understood why he did it.

The beginning of the movie is so confusing because from a linear sense, the Opera House terrorist attack doesn't actually happen at the beginning of the film, but is rather one of the missions that the Protagonist and (young) Neil go on together after the conclusion of the Stalask-12 fight. The reason why I think Nolan put this as a faux-prologue is to represent the idea of the "loop".

I agree with the other comments that there's nothing that made me say "holy crap this is a moment you have to see on the big screen", but still think it's worth a watch in theaters, if for no other reason than to ensure that you won't get anything spoiled before it makes it onto VOD.

I’m not going to go see this movie, but I LOVE that we’re back to a point where we are now excitedly talking about blockbuster films again and using spoiler tags.

IMPORTANT: We normally have a 2-week policy for using spoiler tags, however, only 62% of US theaters are open and NY, SF and LA aren’t open yet which are the 3 biggest markets.

Due to this, it complicates things more than we would like, so we’ll hold off longer to lift the spoiler tags for blockbusters for a little while since not everyone may have the chance to see it that wants to.

You should probably mention this on the OP in case peeps don't read through all the pages.

I like this quote from the article linked below. I put it in spoilers to not ruin anything for anybody.

There is a wonderful exchange in Christopher Nolan’s latest film, Tenet, between Robert Pattinson and John David Washington. “Hngmmhmmh,” says Pattinson. “Mmghh nmmhhmmmm nghhh,” replies Washington.

Hard to pardon: why Tenet's muffled dialogue is a very modern problem

Christopher Nolan’s latest blockbuster is already infamous for its barely audible exchanges. As sound technology advances, why are films getting harder to hear?

Haven’t seen it yet. But ugh I’m so disappointed in what I’m hearing. Par for the course for this year...

Guess I'm in the minority, but Tenet is easily my favorite Nolan film. Plenty of moments that are incredible on a large screen. The flick simultaneously blew and melted my mind. It is a plot-centric film, so don't expect much character development. I also do agree Nolan needs to work on his sound mixing. Overall, I still thought Tenet was an incredible film. I loved it. 5 Stars

Maybe I'll go through Inversion and see if it plays better in reverse ;)

Yes, I have a small touch of old age hearing issues, and I really have a problem with some of the more recent films....especially the last few Batman movies. I could barely understand anything said. I don't have a problem with the older films.

Just saw it.

I think it's very possible this will get better received as time goes on, just because of how confusing it is. This is the type of movie that will likely take a few viewings to understand.

A good spoiler article I wish I had read beforehand

Overall, definitely not Nolan's best but still a movie I think we desperately needed right now.

According to Deadline, that 20.2m opening includes both three days of previews and a full weekend of Canadian grosses. Earlier reports pegged the true opening at around 10m. That's not good, though obviously there are extraordinary circumstances.

I really wonder if Disney will release any numbers for Mulan tomorrow. If it did really well, I think they may do it to try and claim it as a PR victory. If they don't feel good, they may wait until the earnings call to report those numbers. The reason I bring up Mulan is because I wonder which was the more successful release. I have a feeling Mulan did better domestically. For it to have done better Worldwide, 8% of Disney+'s 60M unique subscribers would have to purchase the Premiere Access. To simplify, 4.8M purchases (8%) of Mulan at $30 would get Disney $144M in profit + 5.9M from global cinemas.

It's not too unrealistic to think that 8% of subscribers would purchase Mulan, so i'm very interested in seeing the numbers if Disney releases them. I think the real test for theaters though coming up (obviously this was the first big one), will be Wonder Woman 1984 - IF they keep that date. i've heard chatter that WB may be thinking of pushing it off again.

Scott Mendelson from Forbes noted that it's been third on Disney+ behind The Simpsons and Cinderella 2015 and anecdotally heard sales aren't meeting Disney's expectations. It also did horrible in the countries it opened in this weekend. Disney will probably hide domestic revenue for as long as they can, because Mulan's losses are looking pretty massive.

I'm hoping to catch Tenet in IMAX with a friend sometime this week. Weekend sales haven't been too busy by me but I'd rather be in an audience with fewer than 10-15 people if possible.
