the giant screens are what keeps people wanting the theater experience, and it works for big action scenes with special effects, (like Marvel)
but most comedies and dramas arent even that impressive for a big screen, or even horror,

if the movie doesnt have big special effects or action scenes, the theater experience is not that special. a movie like Step brothers doesnt need a theatrical release lol.

and even then, while our TVs might be smaller, but their quality is higher, i saw Aquaman in theaters (which was great) but watching it on high def tv left a better impression since i saw more detail.

i try to compare both memories and the theater quality was kinda grainy in comparison. same with Ready Player One, i even saw Ready Player one in 3D,
but the home experience was more memorable due to the higher def, i noticed more details, better color.

i watch a movie in theaters maybe once or twice, but watch it at home 20-30 times, eventually the home experience is what i remember most.
sometimes i cant even remember the theater experience at all, there are some movies that i watched in theaters, but i mostly only remember details of the home version

I have both....there are films for sure I have memories of in my house growing up and now.....but theaters I have lots of fun moments like Captain America showing up in Infinity War and everyone clapping and The Hammer scene in End game...not to say these can't happen at your house but the energy in theaters can be fun. Even horror films like IT are just more fun with a group of people or something smaller like Uncut Gems which has moments people gasp at.

As i said before I'm split because as much as i love seeing films in theaters it has downsizes too...the food isn't healthy and costs wayyy to much, 20-25 mins of trailers AFTER the show time, and having to drive to one over just clicking a few buttons and the film being on

Not to get too nerdy, but most films are shown at 24 FPS In the theaters. Most TVs are going to be showing 60FPS. My TV in my den Is setup for 60FPS; while my home theater setup is 24 FPS to mimic the theater experience.

It’s a different strokes kind of thing. And you’d be shocked how many people just rely on their TVs Standard configurations instead of calibrating them for color and sharpness (not too sharp, not to washed, not too dark, etc).

To be precise, TV's still use 24fps (usually its a 2 to 3 pulldown). And one more things, although film is 24fps, it does not mean the shutter on the projector opens and closes at 24fps. Generally it holds the same frame 2-4 times to prevent flicker. There are very few films shot in HFR (and even rarer to release them in that format). Even the Hobbit films, which were shot at 48fps were released at 24fps to home video. (The only one I know that wasn't was the blu-ray of "Oklahoma!" which was released at 1081i @ 30fps to match the Todd-AO projection rate).

Yep, theaters make the most money from Disney films, so of course AMC and friends will kowtow to them.

...Did you read the article? Disney praises the theater experience, but says due to "COVID and changing consumer habits", they may change a few movies.

Disney is saying they are still very much dedicated to theaters, but this pandemic has forced their hand as they have a lot of movies that need to be released with little room on the theatrical calendar. It was far cry from the comments that came from Jeff Shell.

1. Universal didn't tell the Theater Association until minutes before telling the public, that was the only reason they were mad about Trolls.

2. The reason the theaters were mad at Universal recently didn't have much to do with Trolls at all. It was more of the fact that Shell was suggesting releasing movies in theaters AND on-demand at the same time. There's been a long-standing rule that Theaters won't play a movie if it is currently on VOD. They were mad about Universal trying to break from the theaters and threatening their business as well. It's companies thinking about the future of their businesses and the theaters (AMC, Regal, etc) feeling threatened at movies potentially becoming more popular on VOD than in the theater.

Universal really just said "screw it, we aren't telling anyone" and thought it would go over perfectly fine.

Reads to me like Disney is absolutely willing to change how they operate with regards to VOD if it means they'd come out more profitable after what they witnessed with Trolls 2. They can use the pandemic as a reason but this reads like a verbal warning that if it makes business sense, things will be changing for movie theaters, whether they want it to or not.

Trolls 2 by all measures is not profitable.

Except sources within Universal are reporting it's tracking to make a profit...

I get you're a champion of theaters, but your fervent refusal to give Universal an inch here makes it a bit challenging to have a reasonable conversation.

Universal reported $100M from VOD. They ran a full theatrical marketing campaign on top of a $95M budget. They likely spent around $150M if not more in total.

It’s simply not profitable yet and now you have the stars wanting their box office bonuses, which since Universal has boasted about the movie’s success, I’d say they’re owed.

$100M on VOD... so far.

No one is saying it's profitable yet (few films are at this point), but I'm going to go ahead and trust the insiders actually embedded in the studio over your continued insistence that this is doomed to fail based on any piece of evidence that flies your way.

My point is that if a movie like this is just breaking even or barely profitable, that’s a big downgrade from what it did in theaters and larger films would have an even harder time being profitable.

Considering what the first movie grossed, what expectations were for the sequel's grosses (not great), and the money ALREADY spent on marketing that Universal would have lost since the release date was so close before the shutdown, this was ultimately the best decision. Universal probably got a bigger cut doing it this way so the difference was marginal and the movie still stands to make money with a traditional sale price and rentals. Considering Universal was amongst the only studios bring in that kind of coin last month, the experiment was successful.. whether the film has already turned a profit or not.
