Well, I'll now correct my own post. Spirit (WDW1974) weighed in on the Disney LoTR rumor at about 3 AM in the WDWMagic thread on Avatar concept art. Here's his comment: "Speaking of clueless, is Scarlett's manchild 'moron' (her word, not mine) boyfriend really tellin the world that Disney is close to a deal for LoTR rights? What is it with these people?"

Not for nothing, but he also said the other day Disney had NO concept art for Avatar, and even mocked a WDW member for daring to say what he had heard Avatar land included. Guess who was right and guess who was wrong? Clue, Spirit was not right. So, just because he is saying he heard nothing does not mean it is not true.

I have never seen any concrete rumor that any park in the world is vying for this franchise. All rumors have seemed fluffy at best.

It would be incredible to see this happen, however getting the Tolkiens onboard may be more than a tad difficult if they plan to use visuals/etc from the films. Still, hopefully they pull of a miracle and make this happen.. if they put a strong emphasis on all of the literature, and use the books as the canon for the parks then perhaps it could happen.

Just got back from seeing Smaug. I'm thinking the barrel escape would make one heck of a raft ride! Also bonus points is there is an Evangeline Lilly AA in the attraction.

If they wanted to make a dark ride, they could base it on the last scene from Unexpected Journey and have the ride vehicles be the giant eagles so you would be horizontal like on Manta, but have each vehicle be its own separate eagle and escape orcs and stuff like that, but it would probably be too much like Forbbidden Journey...
