Yes, that's the only reason a new Ghostbusters movie should have been greenlit.

It's really all Bill Murray's fault. A true sequel was in the works for years and he kept opposing it.

I get the idea of wanting to do something new and original, but this is not it. He's copying every element from the original movie and just redoing the exact same thing over again. The carachters at least from the trailer appear to be identical to their male counterparts. To me if your going to so heavily borrow from the original at least tie it in and build onto that world that was originally created. Borrowing the name and characters and making the same thing again is the truly unoriginal cash grab.

I never said new and original. I said reinvent, like how people reinvent Shakespeare, or re-tell the tale. It's why we've seen Macbeth in medievil times and why we've seen it in a psych-ward in Nazi Germany.

Same characters / same story can be great and entertaining. Look at Force Awakens.

It all has to do with how one sees remakes/reboots/etc.

Comic Books seem to do this weekly it seems and no one claims they're unoriginal or tarnish the Original Character/Story.

If you're not a fan - you're not a fan. Don't see it. Still have the original and its meaning to you. I will wait for a verdict on whether it's good or not but I applaud Paul Feig, the studio and the folks involved.

Yeah like I said it looks like a fun movie. To me it's not that it tarnishes the original or that the new one will be incredibly bad it's more a lost opportunity to do something new. Also swapping out the carachters gender seems like a cheap gimmick. I would have preferred either a sequel to the original or if they wanted to do something really different I would have loved to see a Filmation Ghostbusters movie.

I do have to wonder since you draw the Star Wars analogy how well It would have gone over if they instead of the new movie had remade episode IV and replaced Luke, Solo and Chewie with female versions. I'm pretty sure that wouldn't have been the blockbuster that the Force Awakens was, I could be wrong I guess.

I think you're judging this thing a little too harshly simply off of a trailer.

I dont think bringing back the cast from 30 years ago (most of which are in this, except for the few who declined) is very "new" or "different." All signs point to the Ghostbuster's sequel you crave would be a bust. Hence Murray saying no. For years. He said yes to this.

Viewing the gender swap as a cheap gimmick Is a massive dissersvice as well, in my mind. It's not a big deal - at all - and it shouldn't be - BUT IT IS. Which speaks volumes about this film. I would love for my daughter to fall in love with these badass science chicks and not every Disney Princess on earth.

You're completely misconstruing my Force Awakens analogy. I was asking if folks would prefer the girls to be Ren and Crew while Murray and company would be Han, etc;

Yeah I'm all for some really great female characters. The fact that they have the same exact characters just changed the name and gender and the fact that this is probably the most talked about element of the new film is what makes it a cheap gimmick.

But they didn't do it as a gimmick. They did it because of the talent needed and present. Ernie Hudson was very vocal about his displeasure, mainly stating that the "fans don't want to see that" which speaks to a terrible culture. But he saw their talents and was impressed and now praises it.

The Internet and the fanboys and their misogyny created the outrage. I doubt anyone on set gives two that they're female.

Sure - view it as a gimmick - or you can view it as a moment of necessity.

Was Avatar's 3D a gimmick or groundbreaking? It's subjective. But it was successful and changed the tides which is what I think this intends to do.

I mean, they literally hit invert on the cast.

The receptionist is Chris Hemsworth, which is funny, but I view it as gimmicky.

This is one of my biggest complaints anyone who complains about the movie is immediately labeled as sexist or misogynistic, why because this is virtually the same movie with females in place of their male counterparts so surely the only valid reason to not like it is because you hate women. I think it's sexist to essentially just place females in male roles and not even change them to create a good strong female character. They just put them in jumpsuits they all filled they same roles and they just slapped a heart on the proton packs. I can assure at least my dislike of the reboot has nothing to do with the fact the cast is female but rather how unoriginal it is. And yes it's a cheap gimmick, people aren't talking about this as unique strong female characters but rather the novelty of the male ghostbusters being represented as females this time.

I applaud them for doing it and I think that gimmicky or not it's a big deal. They could've chucked 4 terrible women in it and they didn't.

Are we viewing gimmicky as positive or negative? What in Force Awakens would you say is gimmicky? Or is it nostalgia? Is there a difference? Did they keep personality but change names / genders bc people want nostalgia while also wanting something new? Or do people even want something new?

I never called you a misogynist. But if you cannot see that majority of the anger / hate for this film comes from that then....? I appreciate and respect valid complaints. Such as not finding Feig's humor funny. That's a valid complaint. "they just made them girls as a gimmick and its unoriginal" needs some more weight (especially since we are judging off a trailer. )

It's a reboot. What did you expect? And Iwhat was your review on the screener copy you have since you said the characters nor the film are changed whatsoever?

Your argument that it's sexist bc they didn't create "strong female characters" is hocus locus. Who said they aren't strong? And why must we only show strong, empowered women?

You view it as novelty. Women and others everywhere will choose the positive and view it as a major stepping stone.

Arguing about the originality of a REBOOT / REMAKE is beyond me.

Depends on each film.

Right now, based on the trailer... it's falling into the usual stuff. Sassy black woman, Mellissa McCarthy being Melissa McCarthy..... but in all reality, we gotta wait for the film. I'll see it because Ghostbusters, unless it gets really hammered with reviews and stuff.

With Star Wars, it did it enough where it didn't get too gimmicky (although the R2/BB8 intro was a bit of that); but they tried to appeal to a wide variety. They gave you a strong female lead Jedi which felt natural. They gave the nods to the past for the olds fans, but introduced new ideas for newer fans.

I can be completely wrong on GB, but from the outside looking in... it's what I'm expecting.

UDPATE: Bigger Deathstar 3.0 also falls into gimmicky...

Your comparison is assenine and irrelevant AND COMPLETELY BESIDE THE POINT I WAS MAKING.

But if it inflates your ego / makes you feel correct - PLEASE compare GHOST BUSTERS and STARWARS.

And also, they did do gimmicks / character remodels with Force Awakens. They made Luke a girl and Han a black guy.

So remaking a movie and replacing the male characters with females can only apply to Ghostbusters not Star Wars? I didn't know the concept would only exclusively work with one movie franchise and not another.

Now if Ghostbusters starred Melissa McCarthy's beautiful hot cousin Jenny McCarthy instead of Melissa, I might be more interested in the movie.:) Who do you want? ... Jenny McCarthy!!!

I brought up Force Awakens being a pure sequel - for the severe nostalgia angle/ hand job it gives to the fans and the fact it is Canon.
Vs
Ghostbusters, being a reboot/origins. My question was if Ghostbusters would prefer a SEQUEL, a la Force Awakens and its TREMENDOUS use of nostalgia. One where old crew meets new crew.

It had zero to do with gender.

For someone who hates being called a misogynist you sure do like to bring up gender and male vs female success.

I KNOW RIGHT I WANNA SEE TITTIES. IM NOT A MISOGYNIST.

Why did the have to cast the mid 40's fat actress, the mid 40's old hag Kristen Wiig, some 30 year old dyke Ellen wannabe, and a 6'2" mid 40/ big black woman.
