It was pretty solid, considering the circumstances. It was never going to be this crazy huge Direct full of the biggest Nintendo series, just because the vast majority of their biggest series probably won’t be releasing for at minimum another year because of where they are on their development timelines.
Actually, I’m gonna go through all of them and examine which series could hypothetically get an announcement.
Mario: The Odyssey team just released Bananza. I’m sure there was some degree of splitting up to work on 3D Mario, but I don’t see it releasing earlier than late 2026.
Zelda: TOTK released over two years ago. The Zelda team has a track record of starting their next game instantly, so the next Zelda has probably been in development. There was a 6 year gap between SS and BOTW and BOTW and TOTK, although TOTK was impacted by COVID. Regardless, I don’t think we’ll see the next Zelda for at least 2-3 more years.
Smash: It’s been 7 years since Ultimate released and 4 years since development fully
wrapped with DLC. I’m sure a Smash project is in the works in some form, but Sakurai really made it sound on his YouTube like Air Riders is and has been his main project for a while. It’s coming, but again probably not for 1-3 years.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons released over 5 years ago, and the DLC/updates finished almost 4 years ago. Up until New Horizons, the series release gap was 3-4 years.
New Horizons of course released a whopping 8 years after New Leaf, but the project was very likely in development hell having originally been planned for the Wii U, then being scrapped and reworked, then delayed several times even after being announced for Switch.
Given how quickly they wrapped up content support for New Horizons, I would be shocked if the next game hasn’t been in development 4-5 years. Add on to that being the second best-selling Switch game and quite literally the PERFECT game to push GameChat, and I would literally put $50 on Animal Crossing releasing next year.
Paper Mario: Origami King released five years ago, and the TTYD remaster released a year ago. I’m not sure if TTYD was considered a full new game internally, so I wouldn’t be surprised if we get word of a new Paper Mario soon-ish.
Luigi’s Mansion: 3 released in 2019, 6 years after 2. This and Animal Crossing are the series I’m most confident we’ll get announcements for, possibly even in the Spring direct. The release timeline just lines up perfectly, and it would be incredibly cool to see what kind of visual magic they could cook up with the Switch 2. This series has some of my favorite art direction in any Nintendo series; ESPECIALLY the first game.
I also pray we get a remake of the first game… you can play it on an emulator with HD textures running in 4K widescreen, and I have several times but nothing can be done about the 30fps. I would kill to see that game in 60 or 120fps.
Mario Sports: Tennis was just announced, I’m sure we’ll get all the other Mario sports games at random points throughout the systems life.
Now, let’s go through all the series that almost certainly won’t get an announcement soon.
Kirby: We’re getting both Air Riders and Forgotten Land DLC. I don’t think we’ll see the next full game for a while, although I can see them alternating between smaller 2D classic style games and Forgotten Land style bigger games.
Mario Kart: DLC or hopefully free updates are certainly coming, but no new game obviously.
Mario Party: Jamboree is still very new, AND got a Switch 2 edition with new content.
Yoshi: We already got an announcement for the very charming if very typical of the series Yoshi and the Mysterious Book (professor layton ahh name)
Splatoon: Raiders is coming and will probably be considered a full title while they spend more time on a hopefully revolutionary Splatoon 4. I have a lot of nostalgia for the series, but they’ve really struggled to evolve it. I’m concerned in the same way I am for Smash: when you’ve refined the formula to perfection, where do you go next?
Mario and Luigi: Brothership is very recent, and I’m still in shock that game exists. I thought it was a dead series. It didn’t review very well, hopefully it didn’t kill the series.
Pikmin: I bet you anything Pikmin 4 gets a S2E and DLC. It’s the type of series that only releases once in a blue moon but will never go away, especially given the sales success of 4 and the popularity of the characters as mascots outside of the actual games.
Donkey Kong: JUST got its huge game for the generation. I could see a 2D Country game, but probably a lot later in the systems life.
Rhythm Heaven: New game already coming.
Tomodachi Life: New game already coming.
Fire Emblem: New game already coming.
