Honestly? Looks pretty fun. I wasn't huge on the original, but this seems to be taking some interesting directions. Interested to see how they incorporate the elements from all these different, and for lack of a better term, weirder games (Kart World, Odyssey, Wonder, Galaxy 1+2).
I love the little bit of Bowser obviously and genuinely liking Luigi. That's not a thing in any of the games, but I love it here. It's that little bit of characterization that was missing from the original film, which was very Miyamoto-coded in the way that it didn't really allow for unique characterization or interesting story beats to exist. As this series of Mario films continues, and as they likely continue to be successful, I hope Miyamoto and Nintendo allow the writers to be a lot looser with everything. It will only make for a better and more fun film in the end.
Rosalina sounds pretty solid from the jump. "Brie Larson as Rosalina" slots in really well with the meme-y cast reveals of the original film, while also genuinely being a good pick. I'm unfamilar with Benny, and admittedly Bowser Jr. here took a moment for me to see the vision. Hearing him back-to-back with Jack Black's performance sold it though. He doesn't really sound at all like Jr., but he does sound like SMBMovie Bowser's son. That's actually surprisingly solid casting work!
And one of the few genuinely good things about the original film was the stunning animation. Nintendo really held Illumination's feet to the fire and didn't let them coast on their regular "Lower budget animation = higher profit margins" philosophy. The Mario Bros Movie was pretty! And this looks to be no different!
I will always be cautious when it comes to this team, led by Miyamoto and Illumination, who have both proven over the years to be resistant to interesting and depthful stories or characters, and overly reliant on surface-level and mass appeal elements. But the SMB Movie was nowhere near as bad as it could've been, and clearly had a lot of love put into it at a number of levels. This looks to be better in a number of ways! I'm interested to see how this one turns out.
