I think Universal is missing the opportunity to devote a new 6th section to the anime properties they've been promoting in Japan.

I'd be interested in seeing how they could do something like Toon Lagoon, but with anime.

Main Ride: VR Roller Coaster (like Space Fantasy's seasonal conversions)

2nd Ride: Mecha Sim (Similar to Smuggler's Run, but you Pilot the Gundam)

Anime in the US is very niche.

They should, but in Japan. I’m not saying it can’t work here but it’s HUGE in Japan. It’s big here, massive there.

Some anime prescence in parades or shows would be nice though.

Outside of Pokemon, no thanks. Too much of a stigma here in the U.S..

Per a worker at Universal, the biggest merch sells outside potter and monsters has been anime. They consistently are increasing their section of the stores to feature and sell anime products as they are one of the best revenue streams

"Anime" as a whole probably, but not enough for a single Anima property.

Japan, yes, I'd believe that....Orlando ? though. Is ANIME like Waldo? I can't really recall ever seeing more than a couple pieces here and there in the Orlando Universal stores....and I was there in June and November vacations.

This is honestly fascinating to me. Monsters sells better than Minions or Jurassic? Wild.

Maybe for the CityWalk merch stalls, but anime/manga merch is only sold in MIB Gear (not counting airbrush hats/tees in Custom Gear, the CityWalk stand, or the claw machines in Kingpin's and Palace) and I haven't really noticed an increase in the amount of retail space it occupies.

Does this includes HHN merch? It would be incredibly surprising if UCM outsells stuff like Jurassic, Marvel, Minions, Simpsons, and Spongebob.

Exactly. I think that was an erroneous report, in relation to Orlando. You need a treasure map to locate an anime item in Universal Orlando.

Thar worker didn’t even get the top 2 right. Anime isn’t even a play for HHN right now let alone a permanent park installation…not in the states.

Are they lumping Minions and Dreamworks into "Anime"?

I have a hard time believing the Dragonball Z booth in CityWalk beats out the onslaught of Minions merch around the resort

Also, I feel maybe some HHN merch is getting added to those "Monsters" numbers

I doubt the Monsters at #2 is even right. There's not all that much in the stores either. Just sounds like bad info....Generally, the best way to gauge how well merch sells in retail is to look at the square footage it occupies in the stores. That' a leading indicator. Neither classic monsters or anime has much of a footprint....Walk through a Orlando theme park store. It's mostly Potter, JP, Simpsons, DM, Seuss, Marvel, Universal Resort, Toon Comics stuff, Illuminations & Dreamworks stuff, not necessarily in that order but with Potter at the top for sure.

*Puts on pedantic hat*

“Anime” is not an IP. It’s not even, really, a genre. It’s a visual medium (animation) and technical style (20 frames a second). More specifically, it’s animation produced in Japan (which is why something like Teen Titans isn’t “anime” despite the visual similarities). That matters because businesses calculate things in “IP;” not “medium.” It’s also why any “anime vs random IP” arguments are generally invalid. If you have 20 different “anime” IPs that each sell one shirt, and Harry Potter on sells 15 shirts, the argument isn’t that anime is more popular than Potter; it’s that Potter is more popular than all of those IPs.

I wouldn't be surprised if Monsters sell well as they can't be found at big box stores outside the parks unlike stuff like Minions.
