Alphonso Cuaron (Prizoner of Azkaban) is in talks to direct.

Amazing news! Cuarón and Guillermo del Toro are my favorite choices to direct! I hope this happens!

BTW, I wonder if they're in talks for the entire trilogy or if they'll do different directors for each of the films... I hope they have the same director and team for all three.

Considering Alfonso Cuaron has nothing lined up at the moment, I'd say he's definitely directing it.

I'm thinking that it was agreed on long ago that Cuaron would direct. I believe that Rowling trusts Cuaron more than any other director, including Yates. Especially when it comes to world-building, which this certainly would require. His work with Stuart Craig redefined the series and created the "Potter aesthetic." It's a good person to put the hands of a completely new side of the WW.

Alfonso Cuaron confirmed he won't be directing it:

While the news sucks, I can see where he's coming from.

Del Toro has waaaaaaaaay too many things going on. The Strain, Crimson Peak, and Hellboy 3/Pacific Rim 2. I'm really hoping they don't get David Yates back. While he did good with DH, I'd like to see some new blood brought to the franchise.

David Yates is knee-deep in Tarzan and will be for the next 2 years. He's out. Del Toro is way too busy. Considering how phenomenal his work has been on Hannibal, I'd love to see David Slade get a crack at it.

Ooh, that'd be a great choice to direct.

What about Mike Newell? I mean, Goblet of Fire did have a lot of magical creatures in it: Mermaids, Dragons, and I think the way he handled the Quidditch World Cup opened up the Wizarding World in a relatable and realistic way.

Honestly, if it's not Cuarón, I don't want any of the other Potter directors. I'd rather have someone new.

What about a Potter film that has maybe a 'Coen Brothers'? It'd be appropriate for kids but It'd allow some interesting possibilities... But;

If they don't come due to that Soviet film that has Steven Directing as they're working on script.. Then i'll be fine with that.

Hellboy 3 will never happen. PR2 will happen. $400 mil worldwide without hitting $100 mil here. In a studio's eyes, a non-sequel hitting $400 on an under $200 budget is a win and gets at least one more film. I'm not so sure Del Toro directs it tho. He's already written a screenplay for it.

Back to Potter, Newell didn't really jive well with HP. He had a notoriously difficult time wrangling the cast and didn't manage to captivate them as Cuaron and Yates did.

And suddenly I've had an epiphany. How amazing would it be to turn Terry Gilliam loose on this sucker? Rowling always wanted Giliam to direct the first film, but he was too much of an odd ball. Now a period piece with a bazillion whimsical animals sounds JUST right for Gilliam...

I know this is from Wikipedia, but...

Gilliam and Harry Potter
J. K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series, is a fan of Gilliam's work. Consequently, he was Rowling's first choice to direct Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in 2000, but Warner Bros. ultimately chose Chris Columbus for the job.[23] In response to this decision, Gilliam expressed that "I was the perfect guy to do Harry Potter. I remember leaving the meeting, getting in my car, and driving for about two hours along Mulholland Drive just so angry. I mean, Chris Columbus' versions are terrible. Just dull. Pedestrian."[24] In 2006, Gilliam added that he found Alfonso Cuarón's Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban to be "really good...much closer to what I would've done."[25] In retrospect, however, Gilliam has stated that he wouldn't have liked to direct any Potter film. In a 2005 interview with Total Film magazine, he said that he would not enjoy working on such an expensive project due to interference from studio executives.[26]

In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1, director David Yates paid homage to Gilliam's 1985 film Brazil, portraying the Death Eater-infiltrated Ministry of Magic in a fashion reminiscent of Gilliam's totalitarian bureaucracy.[27][28]

I cannot figure out why any of you would want Gilliam to direct anything so structured as Potter.

Well, we really have no idea how "structured" this film is. It's a movie about finding fantastic beasts. Not the epic 7-part series.

Also, 12 Monkeys and The Fisher King prove the Gilliam can stick to both character driven narratives and densely plotted scripts.

David Yates will direct

Best choice if Cuaron wasn't coming back, IMO. Yates knows how to handle this franchise and its look/tone well. He'll do a good job.

Definitely not my favorite candidate to direct, but it is true that he is familiar with the franchise and should do it justice. Can't wait for production to start so we can get some more details.
